Who is Hosting This?

Blog - How did it all begin, part 2

Although Stanislav and me agreed that "Who is hosting Who" (that was the original site name) should be launched ASAP because of the upcoming summer break when all IT industry falls asleep it took us a good week to start doing some actual work. Although the service is quite simple: you enter a domain name and we give you the hosting companies' name it took us an additional week to get things rolling. Tomo (owner of Origami) helped out with the design, XHTML and CSS, Stanislav did all the promotions and I spent a good 100 hours writing and optimizing all our net, PHP and MySQL code.
During development we canned the original name and decided to go with "Who is Hosting This?" which was, as later shown, a very good decision. Dedicated hosting was a must for us and since we had very good experience with (mt) Media Temple hosting and domain issues were resolved within a few days. The first, closed beta was rolled out relatively fast, after about 30 hours of development but stress testing showed that network related algorithms needed more cache or we wouldn't be able to handle much traffic and deliver fast response to every query. After some more coding and two additional layers of cache our baby was ready to see the world.
On the 5th of June it was public! We slowly started to promote it and still worked on some minor issues and server optimizing. The optimizing was more than needed two days later when Who is Hosting This? got on the frond page of Digg. The service was partially available for a couple of hours but after that everything got back to normal.
From the time Stanislav and me decided to create WHT till the dime it was done almost a month passed but believe me although it looks simple under the hood this is quite a project. Stay tuned for more inside info, and especially some detailed "under the hood" stories.
