Yes, you have legal rights - your work is automatically copyrighted when you publish it on the web.

Sadly, if the thief isn't responding to the DMCA notice you may need to involve a lawyer - get a threatening letter sent mentioning the fees for use that the thief has already accrued. Contact their hosting company also to put them on notice.

Google advanced seaerch remains a good tool, though some scrapers are catching on. For images, Google's own image search (drag and drop). Getting a little cleverer, www.tineye.com is good for image checking.

As an update, Google remains very responsive to complaints about plagiarism on Blogger. They're also very good at pulling AdSense from other sites that are stealing content - nowadays I automatically notify Google at the same time as sending a cease and desist notice to the thief.

Amazon also don't like crooks and will readily pull affiliate accounts if you demonstrate that they're stealing your content.

One word of caution: the max execution time is in place to prevent runaway scripts from killing the server - it's a good idea to change it back to a reasonable value once the long-running script has completed.

I've sent a couple of emails now about updating incorrect data and have had no reply in over a week now. Does anyone still manage this website?

I have several IP addresses which point to the datacenter, but really they should show my company. The DC is only providing the racks & connection. Has anyone managed to get their data corrected? I have submitted corrections to no avail. It is really quite annoying when this site may be costing hosting companies business.

Is there an API that we could use to update our IP addresses? Or some way hosts can easily correct/update data?

Back in May 2010, I created a custom Gears of War 3 image as a facsimile of the official logo. I contacted Epic Games and they have stated the image is copyrighted to me, even though they own the trademark and intellectual properties to the Gears of War franchise. I found out last week that Paul Jr. Designs (PJD) is selling t-shirts with my design on them. Here is my original: http://crotale.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2pmfw3 and here is the T-shirt graphic: http://pauljrdesigns.com/product/5B8/PJ-PJD1726/black/. Zoom in on both images and you will see the logo is the same.

I contacted PJD, where I was informed that Epic Games provided the logo artwork. I checked with Epic and they deny sending that particular graphic or having used the graphic. I have a good working relationship with Epic and have no reason to believe they would deceive me or misappropriate my artwork.

I have sent a DMCA "takedown" notice to PJD's webhost but have not heard anything back from them yet. I am not looking for compensation, but I do not want my art being sold without permission or credit due to me as being the artist. Do I have legal rights in this regard or do I simply have to roll over and allow this company to commercially sell my artwork without my permission, credit for the work, and no compensation?

I have to make a decision for a client about where to get a hosting account.
I would be interested to hear from WordPress "devsigners" about the hosts where they have WordPress sites:
What version of WordPress do they offer to install for new accounts as of today?
What version of PHP do they run?
Do they offer free scheduled backups?
What has been your experience with their support?
What restrictions do they have on space and bandwidth?
What account control panel do they run (cpanel, etc.)

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

The company I just started working for owns both 'freebeepay.com' and 'freebiepay.com'. They are both registered through GoDaddy.com.

when I visit https://www.freebeepay.com, it works fine, and the domain name resolves when I ping it.

But when I enter that site in your system, you seem to feel that it doesn't exist. Can you tell me if there's a misconfiguration on my end?

Hallo,

this might require sponsors, but I thought it might be a good idea to share this idea.

WHT.com gives away coupons for those who write quality reviews regarding web hosts.

Users, while particularly targeting those that never had any web hosting experience, should have the possibility to sign up for a host of their choce which is listed on WHT.com (via a special link).
The user will submit recorded telephone conversations with the host's customer support and email support requests are submitted by a form provided by WHT. Those conversations are saved into a database, which can then be used (by WHT Staff) to give the host a rating. Forthermore, the user will be provided with testing scripts (PHP memory testing, server speed testing, etc...), and those logfiles should then be submitted to WHT.

If a user does not "cheat" and is satisfied with that host, he/she may get a 6 month free hosting coupon from that company.

I think people are effectively doing the only thing they really can before taking the plunge and trying a particular host - asking other people for their experiences. It won't necessarily find the best host for a given price/technology, but hopefully will be a satisfactory one.
I've found talking to friends that price does end up being the major factor when first going for (personal, not business) hosting. If there are downtime/support/usability issues, a proportion of people will go through the inconvenience of moving to another host. I bet it's not a high proportion though.
If it was easier to migrate domains, email, databases, CMS configs etc, interesting to hear how many people would have moved *away* from their current host and whether the criteria for the new one would be the same.

Totally, I have gone through 3 web hosts. I would not say their names as that could spoil their chances for other clients as I think the experience you get depends on what type of service you are looking for.

My first host was a free one. While it did not offer unlimited bandwidth and storage, which I figured was essential in my site, was generally good and seldom faltered down. The second one, lacked the support for forum software, which I needed that time.

I am not really picky with what web hosting service to subscribe to but all that could be credited to me knowing what I want.

I do not require something with topnotch help desk as I think I can do things on my own. Price, in my opinion, is not of the essence as you do not want to feel short changed because you saved a couple of bucks monthly.

I need however something that would offer support to a wide variety of technologies (old or emerging).

I'm currently at Dreamhost and like the idea of a cheap VPS. Linode looks pretty good. I have a little bit of experience with CentOS and Ubuntu. Shared would be ok too as long as there is a decent amount of control. (custom php.ini, ability to get perl, python, ruby, and mongodb running)

Requirements:
8GB disk space
5GB bandwidth
Ability to use nginx
SSH access
PHPmyAdmin (or ability to set it up)

Control panel doesn't really make a difference to me as long as it's functional. No control panel isn't a problem. (Possibly setup webmin)

I have several clients of mine stating that are seeing results that they are being hosted by my competitors.
I have sent several requests for correction over the last couple months, to no avail.
Search results for my clients are still showing competing host providers.
Since my market is reseller hosting, my clients are typically internet and hosting savvy and do lookups, then complain when the lookups are showing other providers, making them think I am a reseller, which is not the case.
How can I get this corrected? If the results would at least show just the Datacenter, I wouldn't mind, but they showing shared hosting providers, not DC's.
My equipment is self owned and co-located.

Adding live chat to website is very useful and it helps in increasing online sales and maximizing return on investment. Just by adding live chat to your website will not work the main thing is to provide 24/7 support to your website visitors. Live Business care providing such services at very nominal prices.

Everyone offers plain ol' FTP for content transfer, but the really good hosting systems offer one or more of the following:

* SSH (full shell access)

* SFTP (implied by SSH, but may be offered in a limited form by some hosts)

* FTPS (standard FTP protocol over TLS/SSL)

It would be nice to know if a provider offers one or more of these encrypted file transfer formats. SSH itself is a nice data point; if offered, that means there are more tools at the user's disposal to help maintain the site.
