I know a few people who have been around the Internet for a while...
...in the days when there was no choice of who to register your .com domain name... all the others available were either for .gov .edu .ac or country level.
I bought my first domain name by working part time as a student for TWO MONTHS. It set me back over $200, then there were associated fees with currency transfers...
Still the name was bought and a hosting space was available via Network Solutions.
I still have the domain and run the site today :-)
About four years ago, I asked to have access to MY database for backing up etc...
Unbelievably difficult to do.
What has this to do with domain registrars?
Simply put, NetSol were the company who replaced the original monopoly and although the price has dropped from $200 to $35 per year, the dreadful customer service forced me to look around. (0/10)
Go-Daddy (5/10)
may be popular, but with a single spam complaint, they willingly take your domain name and ask you to prove you didn't spam. With that in mind, the domain auctions are good. Privacy is about the same cost as the domain.
The one I finally settled on, but can't get commission for! Are a brilliant, helpful and very proactive Domain Registrar called NameCheap.com
http://namecheap.com (10/10)
Why rate them 10/10?
Simple: customer service. Within 5 minutes of a problem, they have a solution for you - DNS records, MX records or something REALLY complicated! Always polite, accurate and professional - unlike my first registrar.
The Namecheap prices are also competitive and I believe the permanent voucher INTERFACE will bring new registrations to around $8. Privacy is around $3 after the first year free!
API integration is also possible, plus no cost moving from one account to another. Useful if you set up a domain to sell on.
I'd love to know if anyone has similar experiences - or if they think their registrar is better(!)
