Google offer some great free tracking tools via http://analytics.google.com

You need to register an account, and verify your domain is under your control. After that you apply a tracking code and can see where, when and how people came to your site.

A little bit above basic level to set up as some of the technical terms change with each host.

Good video tutorials about it at http://webmechanism.com/tutorials

  2. Hi

Is it possible to use Google to track pdf or video downloads from my site. I would love to know how many of each pdf or video is being downloaded or accessed, so I can get an idea what is popular so that I can build up on that topic.

    Kind regards

  3. Indeed it is. If you are using WordPress, the Ultimate Google Analytics plugin will set it up for you. Else there's an explanation here:

  4. Can I just say, remember to put your tracking code in the right place in the source code! So many people get it wrong and then end up wondering how they are getting sales from their site with no hits!

  5. Just seen this with a major website for sale - when I pointed out the error, traffic literally doubled overnight in GA. Made the same mistake myself before!

  6. I think its because its not where you think you put it! Although it does make it easy if you ever need to update, because you can just place a php include before the body, and host the code in a different file.

  7. Ultimate Google Analytics plugin for WordPress solves a lot of headaches (for example, not logging traffic for administrators etc).
