Incidentally, shortly after this thread kicked off, I moved from Alerta to Pingdom. Been very impressed with their uptime monitoring service so far.

Server Monitoring: Which Service & Why?

I recently grabbed myself a yearly subscription to Service Uptime (http://www.serviceuptime.com/). The thing that convinced me to choose them is that their plans give you points to use. You can then spend those points the way you want time. For example, checking once an hour is only one point, but checking more often, like every 15, 5, or even 2 minutes, cost you more points. So I have some sites I monitor infrequently and some I monitor often, all on the same plan. And you can switch as often as you like how those points are allocated.
