What Webhosting Do I Need for This Traffic?

I quite new to webhosting so bare with me if these questions are quite lame.

What kind of 1)Dedicated Server Hardware and 2)Bandwidth/Service do I need for a site with the following max specs:

    - 400~500 users on the site at any given time.
    - 40000~50000 Members.
    - Site/Server itself will not host anything large.
The largest files that will be hosted on it would be images.
    - Bulk of the traffic will be on the forum section of the site.
    - Preferred location is in North America or Australia.
But as long as the load time for the website is low universally, I don't care too much about location.
    - Very low downtime (99%).
    - Experienced service/staff

I've looked at several webhosting services from search engines.
But I don't know which to trust.

My old webhosting service I used, with out much prior knowledge of webhosting was quite a let down, with constant downtimes and unresponsive and unexperienced management. (Site went down from a random DDOS attack and didn't comeback up for a good 2 days)

I'm presuming from the stats/traffic I stated, I MUST have a dedicated server if I want everything working smooth/fluid.
However, as I stated, I'm quite new to this and I'm not sure.

Thank you for the helpful comments.

  2. Hello HypeMx7, welcome to WhoIsHostingThis.com. All good questions.

Popular forums can be heavy-going on your hosting compared to other kinds of sites. Your best bet is to research similar popular sites in your niche and see who they host with using our tool.

Else I'd suggest approaching the webmasters of similar sites and seeing if they are willing to share their hosting experiences.

If you're looking for dedicated hosting with excellent support, two good starting points are:

    - LiquidWeb
    - RackSpace

However, the cost of any dedicated server at RackSpace is not going to be cheap.

If you want to avoid the expense of dedicated hosting, I'd consider cloud hosting, like RackSpace Cloud or Amazon EC2 for a high-load site.

Be sure to let us know how get along.

Thanks for the quick response :)

Rackspace seems too much for me.
I was looking at a monthly budget around $200 at the most.

But as I stated above, do you have a general grasp on what kind of hardware I would need on a dedicated server?

A dual core with 2GB~4GB would suffice, or would that fall short?
(Single site with stats as listed above will be run from the dedicated server)

  4. It depends on all sorts of factors:

    - Which forum software you're using
    - Cacheing setup
    - Size of images
    - Etc

I'd suggest asking the sales staff at LiquidWeb if they $149/mo server is up to the task, and share with them your specifics (eg, site, software etc).

Else another place to consider for cheaper dedicated servers is The Planet. Last time I checked their cheapest dedicated server was $99/mo. However, I'm not sure you'll get the same level of support you'll get with LiquidWeb etc.

-Forum software would be php oriented, like phpBB.

-Majority of the images will usually be hosted from an external image hoster and linked; anything that are uploaded on to the server itself would only be around 200KB~1MB in size (at the most around 5GB of user uploaded material in total will be on the server itself)

    -CentOS will be needed/used

-Traffic stats are as provided on the above post and I approximate 3~4TB of bandwidth will be need, max. Since majority of the activity is browsing of the forums and the occasional picture here and a smilie there (and even the pictures will be usually from an external hoster as stated)

    -Fully managed server needed
(Have to include security features such as prevention of DDOS attacks)
