BrightBox may not be the best or the highest quality Ruby on Rails host out there for the price, but it is one of the top 100 of the best Ruby on Rails hosts throughout the internet. It does what it needs to do in a basic manner.

Customer service is not the fastest, but it gets the job done. This can be a turn off for new virtual server owners as they may not know what to do and do not want to lose business.

With an aesthetically pleasing website, BrightBox guides you through the process simply and set you up with the basics of what you need when it comes to hosting Ruby on Rails.

There are ones that shed light on the job well done from BrightBox. There usually isn’t too much trouble, but there may be faster options out there for a better price. If you’re running Ruby on Rails in the United Kingdom, this is a perfect option for you if you can afford it.

Conclusion

The service is decent, but the price can be a bit extreme. BrightBox isn’t the most expensive, but it’s also not the cheapest per year of using their service. They do offer reliable backups and restores, which is a feature that some do not offer. This is great as you will not lose all of your information if a technical error were to ever happen on your virtual private server.

Brightbox Hosting Introduction

Brightbox is a UK-based hosting company specializing in Ruby on Rails hosting. They were founded in 2007 by the development firm, Reflex Digital, which previously hosted Ruby on Rails for their clients on dedicated servers. They are located in Leeds.

Services and Specializations

All Brightbox hosting packages feature a dedicated, virtual private server (VPS) preinstalled with their Ruby on Rails stack. They can be easily scaled, either by moving to a larger VPS (they call it a box) with additional RAM or by adding more servers. They include full root access for complete control over the environment, RAID storage, a gigabit private network, redundant public network, and New Relic Standard for monitoring your server and applications.

Brightbox offers five levels of service, depending on the amount of system resources you require. Because these are private hosting plans, they all include a fixed amount of RAM, CPU cores, storage, and bandwidth allotment, but you shouldn’t have a problem finding a plan that fits your organization’s resource requirements. In addition to system resources, plans also vary in the number of connections they provide to Brightbox’s MySQL service.

Brightbox makes no limitations on the number of Rails applications you can host, provided your server has enough RAM to handle them. They recommend that you use Passenger together with Ruby Enterprise Edition, which are included with each plan, to maximize your resources.

In addition to their standard packages, Brightbox also offers a number of add-on product and services. Their load balancing service allows you to spread work out across multiple servers for increased performance and reliability. And managed backup and enhanced support services are also available for an additional monthly charge.

Support and Customer Service

All packages come with Brightbox’s Bronze level support, which includes access to their wiki and forums and 24/7 helpdesk support. Upgrades are also available for Silver and Gold level support. With Silver support you also receive 24/7 phone support and a set amount of hands-on support minutes each month, which can be used for assisting with configuration related issues. The Gold support gives you considerably more hands-on support minutes each month, adds managed backups, configuration and management of your clusters, and 24/7 monitoring and emergency response service for your applications and Brightbox servers.

Security and Backups

Brightbox monitors their network and infrastructure 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and they maintain UPS and backup generators to power outages. For additional monitoring, they offer a 24/7 monitoring and emergency response service with their Gold service package.

Brightbox offers managed backups as an add-on service or along with their Gold level support. This service provides a weekly full backup, along with daily incremental backups. Full backups are maintained for 8 weeks, while incremental backups are kept for one week. The service includes a fixed amount of backup space, but additional space can be purchased as necessary.

Uptime Guarantee

Brightbox guarantees 99.95% uptimes, excluding scheduled maintenance. If they are unable to meet that commitment during any consecutive 30-day period, customers are eligible to receive a credit of 5% of their monthly fees for every 30 minute period of downtime, up to 100% of their monthly bill. This guarantee does not cover customer-caused downtimes, or circumstances beyond Brightbox’s reasonable control.

Billing and Payment Policies

Brightbox can be billed monthly or annually. Annual plans are discounted so you receive 12 months of service for the price of 10. Upgrades are billed at a prorated rate. Accounts with balances over 14 days old may be locked or cancelled. You have the right to cancel your account at any time; however, fees and charges are non-refundable, so doing so make sure to get that request in before your annual renewal comes due.

Customers who exceed their bandwidth quota for the month may be charged an additional fee, currently set at £5 +vat per 5 gigabytes. These fees are charged monthly, regardless of your plan.

Conclusion

Brightbox offers specialized web hosting, which means they’re not for everyone. If you’re looking for a low-cost, shared plan, look elsewhere. If you don’t plan on hosting Ruby on Rails applications, look elsewhere. Or if all you want is a place to host your WordPress blog, you should look elsewhere.

However, if you want dedicated, high-quality Ruby on Rails hosting, you’ve come to the right place. The Brightbox is comprised of Ruby on Rails experts, who do this exclusively. They have the knowledge and experience to assist you with both the setup and management of your web applications. And they have a proven track record with an impressive list of clients, including BBC, MTV, and Amnesty International.

One last thing that should be considered before signing up with Brightbox. Because all of their plans are self-managed, you should have at least some experience with Linux server administration, or have someone on your team who does. Otherwise, you may want to spend the extra on Gold support.
