Gate.com was founded in 2006 by Affinity Internet, a much larger corporation that has been around since 1996. In 2007, Hostway Corporation acquired Affinity Internet (along with Gate.com). Hostway is a massive multinational hosting company and has spent the 2000’s conducting a large number of mergers and acquisitions.
Today, the company trades under its original name of Gate.com with Peter Chambers as the CEO. The company is based in Florida.
The mailing address is Gate.com, 3250 W Commercial Blvd, Ste 200 Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33309.
Affinity has approximately 300 staff members (HostWay has around 700) and the combined companies have around 600,000 customers, (although these aren’t just hosting customers), and a multi million annual revenue.
Gate.com offers hosting for both a Linux and Windows environment and offers shared and, VPS and dedicated hosting.
The original Gate.com data center was in the same location as the company’s headquarters in Lauderdale, Florida. However, in 2007, after Affinity’s acquisition by HostWay, the data centre was moved to a Hostway data center in Tampa, about 270 miles away. The move was scheduled to be completed in one day, over a weekend, but the servers (and several thousand websites) stayed down for three days. ITManagement.com named the move one of the Top 8 Data Center disasters of 2007. The Florida data center has since been sold.
HostWay has 12 data centers (with 250,191 sq ft of data center space), worldwide and hosts over 400,000 domains. Its data centres are based in America, Europe and Asia, with considerations towards Internet Backbone hub proximity and the risk of natural disaster. The company is also very proud of its newest data center, the Boeing Data Center in Chicago, which has the capacity to offer colocation services for the first time.
HostWay has the following famous clients Major clients include: Coca-Cola, Disney, McGraw-Hill, Sony/BMG, Wrigley Company, Hershey’s, Fox News Channel and Wikimedia.
