I have been with Homestead for almost 5 years. My business has grown like crazy. Unfortunately Homestead has gotten worse and worse by the minute. It all started when they migrated a new server in last year. Since then it has been one bug after anther,. Today my customers cannot even get on my site and there is no one there to help. If I didn't have so much invested in my site I would move to another hoster.

I used homestead for the last 4 years without issue. I had a generic info site that was meant to direct traffic to my physical business. It did not require a lot of maintenance so I was shocked when I went to update it to see it had been pulled down. Homestead made no attempt to contact me or my company. There was not even a notice when I logged in to the homestead web builder to let me know that it had been closed down or why.

When I contacted customer service I was put on hold for a very long time, then told we just needed to update our info and the site would be back up in 30 mins. So I gave them the updated info and waited. When the site wasn't back on the next day I called again. They told me they would not bring the site up unless I paid an $80 dollar fee. After a long debate about the fee and them not explaining what it was for but that there was nothing they could do, basically ransoming my site back to me, I asked them to close my account. I was done.

The following day I logged in to homestead, thinking it would tell me my account was closed and wanting to make sure they did in fact close it, just to see that it was still open. So I quickly when to the billing tab to see if maybe they were just going to leave it until the next billing cycle (which was pointless because my page was blocked). Not only did they add another $18 charge for the month, but they also charged my card an additional $50 for "services."

Never again.

I have been using Homestead since about 1999, when it was a free service and when there was no Intuit (FYI, it is no longer associated with Intuit). The free users who stayed with Homestead for a fee, were "grandfathered in" (term used by Homestead) and given an extreme discount for the top tier service plus bonus features, with a promise that those users would always have this special treatment as loyal customers (if I were to quit Homestead and come back later, I would not have the grandfathered status). I pay roughly $8 a month and have the top level service with unlimited sites, commerce features, and all the other stuff. Homestead has stuck to it's promise even after affiliating with Intuit, and then separating from Intuit. There is nowhere that would provide me with what I am getting for what I am paying, so as long as Homestead keeps its promise, I am keeping with Homestead. If I could afford the full price, I would probably stick with Homestead at that top tier level of service.

I agree with those who say it is unrealistic to expect a new user to be able to build a professional website immediately without any kind of learning process or help. Homestead is great for a very creative lazy person who is able to learn independently, and able to step outside of the template box. I do not use the templates at all and never have, because they are too limiting for me; I use basically just skeleton features to insert original content.

The code snippet box feature is what I like the most, because I am too lazy to try to write an entire website from scratch. The internet is full of resources for free code snippets which can be edited to no end for customization (there are even e-mail service hosts for which sign in and signup boxes can be put directly on Homestead pages, for site owners who want to offer their visitors e-mail addresses with specific subdomains).

Basically, if you get a Homestead account but are not creative and/or don't want to put in any effort, you will have to either have a beginner-looking website or hire a designer who can customize for you.

I had a Domain with Homestead for several years. The website build was great. Easy to use templates and intuitive building process. After a bit I added a second e-mail address to separate a business feature and then later another page (these were slight cost increases. I loved it! Then I got an overall cost increase and was not too happy about it but the service was good so I continued.
Then, on New Year's eve when it was conveniently (for them) to be unable to contact them, my website was pulled down. I went ballistic and called Support but was told that because it was an "Abuse" issue I would have to contact the review team by e-mail (only; no phone) and not until Monday (3 days later).
On Monday I sent e-mails from every OTHER e-mail account I had (since the ones from my Domain would not work) and finally got a reply. They said that I had "violated their Terms of Service" by offering firearms for sale." Well their TOS say that you cannot ILLEGALLY offer firearms for sale but I am a Federally licensed Firearms dealer and a registered business in my State and have City approval so my firearm sales are completely legal. I offered to send them copies of my licenses and their asinine reply was, in effect, "We don't have the time to verify that you are legally conducting these sales so you must move your Domain."
In other words, even though I WAS in compliance with their TOS they just don't want to host Firearms retailers but don't have the balls to say so.
I have since found a firearms friendly host and have moved my Domain. Homestead sucks.

I've been with Homestead for over a decade. I've tried lots of other web builders, and many have some nice templates. But Homestead gives me templates and creative freedom. I also build websites for clients. You can see some of my work at www.DwightOkita.com.

Sometimes I find other web builder templates too limiting and not customizable enough. Some of the features I like at Homestead include: scrolling images, statistics report of visitor behavior and visits, the ability to use a template to start with and then fully customize. Though they may use HTML, to create a site you don't use HTML at all but a user friendly site builder tool. This makes it easier for my clients to update their own sites if they wish.

Homestead was a great hosting company for small businesses and hobbyists back in the day (like 10 years ago) when designing websites was difficult and HTML was king. Their WYSIWYG website builder was super easy to use and best of all, free with a hosting package. Now that Intuit bought them several years ago, Homestead has become another revenue source for Intuit, looking to squeeze out every penny they can from small businesses, charging a premium price for old, antiquated, HTML only webhosting. That is correct, as we are nearing 2015, Homestead still only offers HTML based websites instead of today's ubiquitous PHP and database driven webservers. This means no you can't use Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, Magento, or any other database CMS with their webhosting services. Did I mention that they (over) charge their customers because they are either too ignorant or lazy to realize that you can find better webhosting, i.e. Hostgator, Inmotion Hosting, Siteground, etc. for a fraction of the cost? Their starter account starts at $5.99/mo and limits your site to 5 HTML pages; for $20.99/mo, you get 100 HTML pages, and if you want an online store, you're looking at $60.99/mo. That's insane to pay those kind of prices for page limited HTML only webhosting.

Homestead went down weeks ago and people cannot access my web page or those of their other customers. Homestead did not warn me this had happened. I found out from a client. I'm loosing business while homestead does not answer their phone, give legitimate updates and, even more disconcerting, they have disabled their live chat. However, they did bill me for this month. DO NO USE THEM!

Homestead support is really bad when problems arise. I paid for SEO services for six months and received nothing. I had to call many times to get it corrected and they had to refund me since it was all wrong by them. I was put off for days when not contacted back because they had it so wrong. I had to follow up every time or it would have been ignored by them. Every time I would call a different person would say they would get back to me with the corrections and information and they did not. They have partnership company's doing there work so you can never get the person needed. It has cost me allot of time to keep the account information correct. As far as site builder they expect everyone to know things already and they don't help much when I needed it, especially at the beginning.
After years of billing on the 20th my history was missing information. It showed o due for the month then five days after it billed me with a new billing date, I was not notified of this. It's not all bad, the support is hard to contact and work with that's my main issue of disappointment.

Hello all,

I am very happy to see that I can now write a review of Homestead. I have used their service for 6 months and then I stopped because they practically forced me to. I had a few domains hosted with them and they all got blocked all of a sudden. Not to mention their "hosting" is way worse than the free page builders such as weebly or webs.

When I first contacted their support team about my websites being blocked, I had to wait for a couple of days to get an answer saying that I had to pay more money to get my domain names back and that I had to pay even more money to transfer them out of Homestead. One these domains I wanted back was the domain of a customer that had to be restored in 24 hours (even waiting for an answer took more than that) so I lost a customer and had to give him a full refund or just half the money if I was able to restore the website (on another host) and get the domain back. Since I didn't want to lose money I contacted them saying I was willing to pay to get the domain back but then they stopped responding. They didn't respond my countless emails until I contacted their domain provider (they were just resellers of the domains) and then Homestead support team wrote an email to me as if it was the first time I requested something. In the end, I was never able to get any of the domains back and now I am waiting for them to expire.

All in all I think Homestead is a waste of time that will eat your money. I would recommend you to host your websites with siteground or hostgator if you want quality, they are also way cheaper.

I love their service. I've had a homestead account since the early 2000s and it hosted tons of pictures and the down time was nearly non existent. Anyone without a computer background can easily build a page using their tools. i would definitely recumbent this host to friends and family wanting to start a site for personal or business use.

  • Value-added features

Cons

The Verdict

This host offers three, direct service plans. All three are competitively priced and include basic Web hosting services. However, Homestead is not a full service hosting company. They specialize in website building and design, with some e-commerce and SEO features.

It is smart to plan ahead for the possibility of moving to a bigger host in the future, so keep in mind exporting websites from a service like Homestead can be complicated. They own the templates you use to design your site, plus the stock images they provide. That said, small businesses and freelancers may find Homestead’s services a good fit when creating a Web presence and building traffic.

Homestead has an excellent and easy-to-use web building tool, regular site backups, detailed site reporting, product catalogs and shopping carts. These features make Homestead a perfect place for any small business or company to sell it's products and services.
The big downside is the lack of support for third-party web-building clients/tools combined with the high priced templates and disk space.
Overall,Homestead is solid and reliable but could make a few modifications to their pricing plan.

I use this hosting site and it's amazing. I've talked to support and there hasn't been something they couldn't help me with. Also, it has some cool features such as a nice sitebuilder and addons such as emails via hootsuite, and more storage. I would recommend this to any one who's interested. Best of all, you can get a free hosting plan by using a CC.

Homestead has super good support system in place, not only by call, by on line chat and has a good system community chat with full function tech support help.

1. If you make a call and most of time you need to wait for 3-5 minutes to get an answer.
2. On line chat help which only wait for 1-2 minutes.
3. Community chat support usually get back an answer within 24 hours.

I had great experiences with their on line chat help, the agent was not only providing customer service of question but also providing tech support for my needs.

So, I will give 5 stars of their on line support. Most of customers are new to website design and domain issues, so if they have on line support which really give customers confidence to use their service.

Load time is generally slow. Sometimes I get a 404 for no reason on my sites. Software keeps changing but does not work very well. Things like uploading images for viewing change to different functions that rarely meet my needs. Sometimes their software lets me think I updated my site but it did not, and then my pages might go on letting me update them without actually updating them, until the servers lose the pages and I cannot even mistakenly think I got it solved. The thing that really bums me out is calling tech support about this problem of lost files and pages, and they give me one stupid guy or lady after another who thinks they're saving me and wants all kinds of applause even though they really don't do anything. It's so much grief. I've been with it for over a decade and I promise myself every year I will get a real web host. This is the year.
