I was looking for best reviews on the net and I have read that HostGator was just very good advertised, otherwise "this" host and "that" host were way better, as support and pricing, and wiping you down there, etc. Than I just tried HostGator. I found it the best offer I would have ever imagined, so I made the deal instantly. My host is and will be HostGator. The support is 5 stars, they're very good and quick. I don't think one need anything better than that.

Hostgator was great until June 12th this year a server went through maintenance and has not been right since. I have requested transfer to a new server but they just continue to try to fix the issue and cause more trouble. 99.9% guarantee is bogus they back that claim up with nothing you have no compensation for their failures,

Have been with Hostgator for over 5 years. I recently left them only to find out how good they are compared to other competitors.

At hostgator, I got 2 temporary suspensions for excess CPU usage caused by staying logged into Wordpress as admin. It was an innocent mistake. We didn't find this out until the 2nd strike. If you get a 3rd strike, you're out, hence why I left under my own accord in a controlled fashion.

Hostgator have been actively improving over the years, in terms of service, performance, and features. Performance and features are the strong points of Hostgator.

The most frustrating thing was the support, and the waiting in the queue to get someone on live chat. Getting the issue resolved is a bit of a hit and miss. I think 4/5 times they get it right. I work in IT, so generally when I log an issue, it's not your newbie how to add a domain. While hostgator support is not the best, they've come a long way.

I think we've ever had 3 outages while I was with Hostgator, which is an average of 1 every 2 years.

Seriously considering going back to them under a new account. Just waiting for a deal to take them up on. In the mean time, I'm researching if there are others worth considering.

Hostgator rocks guys because i hosted a site for more than 2 years and there hasn't been any flaws from them they have nice plans they are really cheap they gurantee a 99% uptime but according to me its 110% uptime they have an excellent support with toll-free number and live chat . If you want to lose customers I suggest you give Hostgator a chance. If you want a webpage with very little code on it to take 6 seconds to not loading at all, again Hostgator are your company. Basically they're either crowding too many people onto the same server or not dealing with customers who are taking up all of the server resources and bandwidth. It's a shame because of couple of years ago they were a great company.

HostGator was recommended to me by a few people. I know Glen from ViperChill is a big fan of their services however I don't think they are the most easy to use, nor the most cost-effective. I'd probably prefer to use my domain's hosting service as it is easier to streamline. In saying this however there is nothing wrong with the service, it does what it's meant to do and the support is good.

Worst customer service. I have "business" hosting with them, which I am going to get rid of as soon as I backup my website.
1. I used to have custom 404/403 error pages.
They, without notifying me!!!
- made a change on the server and replaced my whole .htaccess
- So the web-site started to show their 404/403 pages with hostgator logo
2. Once upon a time they did a server upgrade and completely removed all the files that I sell on my website. Over 20gb of data...
3. One of their support staff removed .htaccess file in the root thinking it is going to resolve the issue and that my website doesn't really need it. Dumbest support person I've ever interacted with.
4. They already forgot to replace "business" SSL certificate twice ! My website goes unoperational for a few days just because of their customer service.

It offered hosting on their Texas based server and i did not experienced any technical flaw and interruption in their servers. I love their support and features. No complaints about that.
But I am hosting a wordpress domain on my hostgator account, and as it turns out it takes forever to connect to my server. Their support told me to use Cache plugins, and optimize my website, and even after spending 24hours and finally optimizing it, it came out with the same problem. Then suddenly it was back up. So I realized they are just fooling around with me. Its their stupid server that fails to take up my website's load.
Go with something else, hostgator made life worst.

Dear Friends,

If you are thinking to use the Hosting Services from Hostgator provider then you will get a horrible experience with them specially with the website related to badabase. I have always notice that there data base server get down for 2-3 minutes in every 1, 2 ,4 hours and sometimes in 1-2 days. It will show you following message like(error Establishing a database connection)

In Reply they have mentioned there server are slow and in there Ticket: IKJ-28706259. below is the hostgator reply(As per your mail we had checked your account and we are sorry to inform you that we were experiencing MySQL issues with the server. As it is quite unfortunate the issue was caused due to some of the accounts in the server which were abusing the resources. Currently, our monitoring department is continuously monitoring the users and are suspending them, do verify the MySQL threads which is quite normal now. As our monitoring department is working 24/7 to detect such users there is no need to worry.)

Ticket [KHX-28848398] The problem becomes worst when they have block my website without early information to rectify the website and send me a simple mail to remove some plugins and script. It was strange that i was not using any one of the mentioned plugins and scripts by hostgaotor.

Hostgator is saying that my website is creating load on there server and it was again socking for me that 40-50 pages of my website is creating load on there server.

I have call the hosting provider and talk to them almost hours to resolve the problem but there management is so poor that can't connect my call to there senior officer or admin team as they are not available. It's show me Very poor management of Hostgaor serivses.

Moreover, when i have asked them to tell me the specific reason for blocking the website . they told me same global answer. They have restricted my website on high priority but did not rectify it on high priority. I have bear more lose due to it. Now. i have decided to change my hosting service to get better service.

Guys do not go for Hostgator it is a horrible nightmare.

I used hostgator to register a domain (because they were anti-SOPA), and after I signed up I found out I'd been shoved off to a third party affiliate, which resulted in their customer support not being able to find that I have an account with them, so they couldn't help me with any problems. When it came time to renew my domain, it gave me errors when I attempted to pay. Hostgator told me they couldn't help, and that I should just wait for my domain to be deleted, and then re-register. Several months later, my domain was deleted and back on the market (luckily it wasn't snatched up by someone else). Needless to say, I registered it with a different company (for way cheaper too).

HostGator delivers poor customer service and zero customer satisfaction, stay away.

I host several websites and they suspended my account due to an electronic billing error on their end that showed me owing 40cents.

I had paid my invoice 10 days before and my PayPal transaction ID matched the toal invoice sum and they still denied the error and suspended all my business websites

completely unreliable, waste of time and zero customer care, had to wait 20 minutes to chat to a representative, no apologies were presented and no fix or answer either, claiming they had to wait for an audit.

I have been with Hostgator for about 8 years and for about 6 or 7 of them they were actually really great, responsive and reliable. However, the past year or two their service has gone down the toilet. Their support team takes forever to respond to tickets. I purchased an SSL it took them about week just to acknowledge the request then about another two weeks to have it installed.

Their service has been very sketchy as I had a Dedicated Server with them, at the end of the year of 2013, they had an outage that took several hours to be restored then 4/16/2014 they had an outage that lasted for over 30 hours!!! Mind you, they disabled chat, wouldn't answer phones, updated the forum about 7 times with a pre-canned message that simply said "we are working hard to restore" the same with social media.

Then once they restored the service, they had the audacity to send me a warning as first email stating one of my client had a malicious script injected and it was my responsibility to monitor. They didn't say ANYTHING about my 30 hour outage, most likely they were mad that I berated them on their terrible service, so that was their get back. Either way, if they would have handled this professionally and had any type of redundancy in place it would have never came to this.

This outage affected over 5 million users as I read. I would never recommened Hostgator or Bluehost (same company now) to anyone if you are serious about your websites such as ecommerce or just need it up. Go spend the extra bucks and be assured that your business will continue.

I have been a customer with Hostgator for 8 years. They were great until about a year or so. Their service, support and uptime started to completely deteriorate. I purchased an SSL took almost 2+ weeks to complete even with no response.

They had several major outages in a 1 year or so time frame which last for many hours. The last just happened 4/16/2014, my dedicated server amongst millions of websites were down for just about 30 hours - yes - 30 Hours!!

They disable chat and won't answer the phone during that time. No reply to tickets except directing you to their forum for updates which doesn't say anything but "work are working hard at it" "No ETA", etc. The only thing they respond to was Twitter but that didn't mean anything, it was more damage control but they sucked at it.

They did not respond to me but most likely on to Twitter Accounts that had 1000's of followers because they can do the most harm.

The funniest thing is after damn 28 hours of downtime, the first email I get from Hostgator is about a TOS and one of my hosted sites was breach due to a plugin and they were reprimanding me as it was my responsibility. I just started to chuckle. So you won't respond to the several inquiries about your sorry infrastructure that left millions websites down but never have I heard of such a long down time EVER. And of course they don't take accountability.

I was told that Hostgator didn't have any redundancy when their router failed which caused this. Any major hosting company must have several redundancies in place in case something like this happens. But most likely it is to cut corners.

I almost found out that Hostgator was bought out by EIG who owns many hosting brands including Blue Host and their infrastructure is subpar.

I went to LiquidWeb and told them about Hostgator and they said that this should have never happened not for 30 hours. Not sure how they will be able to retain customers at that rate.

I would have recommend Hostgator before this incident but this incident uncovered a lot and it is not the Hostgator I know. This new ownership made this company a cheap underperforming host. If you make money of your site such as ecommerce or rely on uptime. Stay as far away as you can because their customer service sucks along with their performance

Hostgator is horrible! Stay clear from them. they have gone down 2 times in 4 days. They are down right now, 4-16-14 and so far its been 90 minutes. About 5 months a go they were down for 3 DAYS. They go down at least one time per 2 weeks. Sometimes its only for a few minutes but many times they are down for hours. The customer service is horrible. I have been on hold for 52 minutes so far and still waiting.

I decided to give HostGator a try after hearing good reviews about them but they lacked what i wanted and i was not impressed.

I did not experience any downtime on my website and loading was fast.

However, I had problems with their 24/ support. I found that none of the support technicians knew anything about web hosting.
-I asked for the technician to add an additional domain to my account (to host 2 websites) and all he did was add a subdomain to my existing site
-On another occasion, I asked the support staff to help me with .htaccess. The person didn't even know what .htaccess was!

In the end , I would not recommend that you use HostGator. they now nothing of web hosting and i now many websites that are cheaper then them and much better

I have been using HostGator India for more than two years now and the reason why I love them so much is because of their customer support.

I clearly remember back in year 2011 I started using their offering VPS for the first time for mine first blog, and then thereafter the relation flourish in such a way that I never think of option for any other hosting provider.

Host gator is a host with multiple unlimited features. Everything about the hosting part is great, no downtimes, you can do everything you'd like to do such as set up your email very easily. The fault of this hosting company comes at a different angle; customer support. Sure they provide customer support, you can email them for help. I've emailed them once when I had a problem. It took them more than 24 hours to respond and their response did not at all help me with my problem so I emailed them again and it took them another 24 hours to respond. That's what I find frustrating about hostgator. If you're good and techy, you shouldn't have to worry about this. I eventually fixed my problem and I lived happily every after with my hosting.

Host Gator, has been around for quite some time. Its a great webhost to use and ill explain why. Host Gator was my first webhost and I didn't know at that time how to setup everything. please stay clear of hostgator. I was running a gaming website for almost 2 years. they might offer unlimited bandwidth, and email accounts, but the truth is, they try to cram as many web servers onto a machine they can, and limit everyones CPU to a ridiculous amount. So, when your site gets busy, and starts demanding additional CPU processes, guess what? they shut down your site! Then they will blame your site is not efficient and needs optimizing, and try to sell you a 80$ VPS. It turns out, we left them and took our site to Vortexservers.com , and guess what? Our site runs very much better than on hostgator from the same price. No more website shutdowns, and we found out we dont use that much CPU in the first place. So please, stay away from hostgator and their strict CPU limits. they may offer unlimited bandwidth, but they give you very little CPU usage to run your website and rudely shut you down if you go over.

I will say they have good prices and good options, as well as "ok" up time. Beyond that, since they "sold out", they have been uncaring when it comes to support, refuse to provide quality servers to those of us paying for a dedicated server, refuse to support the dedicated server that "they" set up with the software, and spent a week from the time an SSL was requested before they initiated the installation.
The bottom line is, they don't care anymore. I've been developing sites since 1995. I've been hosting sites as a reseller since 1999.
Today, I got SO frustrated with my clients anger which was directly related to HostGator refusing to respond that I simply gave up reselling. I'm moving every one of my clients out of HostGator to their own hosted accounts. It's not worth losing clients over the few dollars a year profit because in the end, there is no profit when I have to spend literally 50 hours a year on the phone or chat with HostGator to get them to respond. When they do, 2 agents tell you one thing and a third and fourth tell you something completely different.
The customer service is, well, they really don't care. So is that customer service? Or just monkey's answering the phones? Quite frankly, after having been with HostGator for years, it was SO nice before they sold to know I could speak to an intelligent individual within 10 minutes of calling, or even on chat. Now, that's non-existent. Tech support doesn't know what they are doing anymore than the monkey's answering the phones or chat.
This week was the straw that broke my back. I put in an order for a Private InstantSSL - the most expensive they provide. It's the end of the day Thursday and the only response I've had was this morning when HostGator asked for the company verification information....which was already sent to them on Monday.
What good are the prices if you can't get the service? It's embarrassing when your clients ask that something be done and you can't because HostGator is standing in the way. Your clients don't care...just get it done...and you can't.

HostGator Rocks, for the intermediate to expert website developer. If you know nothing about building websites and the jargon required, HostGator maybe a little challenging for you, in the beginning. i like hostgator because it is really cheap in costs and is very supportive in all kinds of manner. hostgator is one of the leading websites in providing hosting and i like hostgator because one time i was on a free hosting site and they deleted my content for they told me that my site has inappropriate content and they deleted some of my main files and so thats why i shifted my hosting from 000webhost to hostgator and then there were no such issues they are still good and responsive in any kind of help i require i didn't knew how to host a site but by visiting hostgator once i got to know every thing about hosting and vps servers and dedicated servers and other stuffs. Been building websites since 1995 and during that time used quite a few hosts. When you get a bad one, it can ruin your life or your business quite quickly. That said, Hostgator used to be my favorite. I stayed with them for many years, but I'm leaving now. Ever since they were acquired tech support and quality has steadily declined and has gotten so bad that it takes hours and even days to get help even in urgent situations like slow load speeds of a minute per page because the site is overloaded or no email. I'm leaving and taking all my clients with me. Sorry to see such a great company get so bad. I used to be a raving fan.

HORRIBLE! In the last 5 months our servers went down at least 4 or 5 times. One time the servers came back up and our site was destroyed. Luckily we had a backup. Wait time is tooo long and customer server is a joke.

Was with hostgator since 2006 and paid monthly.....about 6 months ago I had problems online with paying monthly, so just paid for the year. We recently decided to switch to GoDaddy as their hosting is very inexpensive and we have most of our domains/sites with them. After many emails from Hostgator....why are you leaving, rate us, etc., I had asked about our refund. After paying $86.00 we are getting a $16.00 refund as they are withholding our extended term discount. What? We were with you for a very long time. I guess its a good way to keep in business by not refunding your "leaving" customers properly. Glad we went with Go Daddy!!!!!!!!

My name is Ani Ahmetaj and I have been using Hostgator as my hosting provider for over 4years. In this time I have also used other web hosting providers for different websites I have worked with and I have to say that until December 2013 I was extremely happy with their hosting. In a period of 4 years my website went down just once and the issue was fixed faster than expected. Whenever I needed help from them they were always quick to answer with useful tips and information. Their hosting could be considered the best until December 2013. In December all the websites I hosted at Hostgator were hacked. The brought the websites back up using their backups right after I reported but my websites were hacked a second time soon after. They fixed it again and I changed all my password to find out that 1 website, not all of them anymore, was hacked again in January 2014. After the last website was fixed I haven't had any issues with them. The hacked websites were marked as malicious websites from google and antivirus softwares and it would have cost me lots of customers if hostgator didn't perform their server scan for malwares and remove the threads.

Everything is fine now and I'm happy to be a customer of HostGator.

I wouldnt recommend HG reseller service at all. The server performance is just mediocre; downtimes everyday, and hurtfully slow. You will get more value for a PRO shared account in other hosting than from their reseller account that cost twice. I have been working with quite a lot hostings, and HG is by far the worst in performance. Apparently Im not the only one that thinks this, you will find all kind of complains about their services around the web, and here too. I wish I read those complains before.

I have several complaints with hostgator. I signed up with hostgator because of their price and a few good reviews and ratings. Do NOT be persuaded by these misleading reviews. I am not a single site owner - I own, maintain, and design sites for several clients, so my knowledge of webhosting is probably higher than most other reviewers...

First, I setup my account and spent a full day transferring several sites over. The next morning, I get an email saying that they need me to fax over copies of my credit card and ID. I completely understand the need for this for security and fraud protection. However, 3 hours after sending me this "warning" email, they deactivate my account and my email (after only 3 hours notice!). So, as I had left for vacation that morning, I was unable to do this immediately. I asked for 24 hours so that I could go to my hotel's business center, but hostgator said 'no' and everything had to remain "suspended". So, for a full day, I had no website and no emails. If you run a business, you know how debilitating this is. I found this unacceptable, but was stuck with them...

Second, I found hostgator's service to be extremely slow and poor. I have several sites, and any that use hostgator servers perform much slower than my other sites.

Also, hostgator may seem cheap, but their LOW price plan does not support some very basic features (so, your server may be lacking some items that you "assumed" were included). I had to get the "next level" up in order to have my sites running correctly.

And finally, when I asked to get some items resolved, and threatened to cancel my account ... they stopped answering my emails and cancelled my account (without any confirmation or verification). Their solution was not to try and fix a situation ... but to just get rid of a customer. I found this absolutely disgusting. Luckily I had everything on my server backed up and was able to switch to someone else (otherwise I would have been STUCK with them).

I'm not a techie, I just married one. But I do love starting new websites and try not to ask the spouse for help any more than necessary. I have found HostGator's support to be fast, friendly, and doesn't lose patience with me over dumb questions. One very helpful gentleman actually created and uploaded an .htaccess page for me when couldn't i figure out why you can't get to my index page just typing in my domain name.

The plans are also very affordable and flexible - I don't have to worry about how many domains I have on the account or how many websites I have going, for $15 per month. And I know that if I needed it, there are higher-tier plans available, so I don't anticipate needing to switch anytime soon if I invent the next Twitter.

I've been with hostgator for about 6 months now hosting my personal web-sandbox site on their cheapest plan. So far it's mainly been a breeze having my website with them. I haven't had any trouble with my site so far and haven't seen very much downtime.

The only thing I could negatively comment on is the pricing. It's pretty expensive if you're just looking to host something personally which won't get many views but if you're buying for a large company the expenses will be fine for you.

Hostgator is simple for people who have no idea what they're doing. They provide easy to follow tutorials and have built in features like a site builder.

I'd mainly recommend hostgator to small businesses to host their site or people who are hosting a personal site but just want that little extra guarantee of excellent support.

I have been hosting websites with Hostgator for about 7 years now. The last couple of months my sites have been going down multiple times everyday with a 504 Gateway Time-out. I've been with Hostgator for a little over 2 years now. First year was great. Fast speed and great customer service. I'm not sure what has happened to them over the last 6 months or so. There has been 3 separate outages, two of which were down for several hours. My speed has also decreased dramatically. I'm running WP and WP super cache and still it's just slow. I'm scoring well on GTMatrix.

Seems to me this all stems from when they moved their data center to Utah. I'm in Kentucky so many distance has something to do with it. Whatever the case it has been extremely disappointing and frustrating. I'm now looking at new hosting providers. I am sick of them. It's that bad.

I've been with HostGator for about 5 years. Like many others, I agree their service has become terrible recently. Hold time for online chat or phone takes forever. Their staff have bad attitudes and don't care about customer service. Our dedicated server was recently hacked and 1.8M spam emails were sent out. HostGator didn't even notice it. It wasn't until our IP was blocked for spam that we began to investigate and getting support from HG was like pulling teeth. NO phone support was available, and online ticket responses took 24 hours per response. They refused to offer any real solution and we are forced to move to another provider.

I've used host gator with one of my websites, though support is good. I Dont think i'd want to host there again for three reasons.
1- my clients are in europe, and hostgator do not possess a datacenter in europe which causes delays in connection
2- The fact that they do not offer a free domain upon registration
3- I've seen slowdowns in that website and the support staff didn't really know what is the cause of it so i had to move my website to a different host and voila problem solved.

The support is knowledgeable but it takes a long time before they reply to your question which is why the rating is 4/5. If the support was faster i would rate it 5/5.

Pricing
The cost for basic featured hosting is much higher then other hosting companies. For better features the prices are so over priced it would be better just to switch hosting. Whats good is there is monthly billing for people who can't pay for a year.

Uptime
The uptime is pretty good and i haven't seen my previous website go down at all but according to others the websites have been down for a couple of minutes.

Control
The Cpanel is very good but is very basic and has no customizations made (which doesn't matter that much but i do not prefer the standard look). All it has is a custom banner and background, which is nothing compared to site5. It has some good features like Attracta. There is a lot of advertising which are within sections of the control panel, so you might click on it to see what it does but it will basically ask for money for full features.

Overall
Overall Hostgator is a good company and is worth it if you have ENOUGH money for hosting, the basic plan isn't to overpriced. Although hostgator is good i stopped hosting with them because i had no spare time. After i had time again i didn't want to fork out to much money and switched to Arvixe because it was cheaper and same features.

My Experience
When i first bought hostgator they helped me with everything. When i got a new domain name they helped me, and throughout my journey with hostgator i haven't been mad once (okay maybe once a month when I was billed). I had to much work from school so i stopped hosting because i wasn't actually working on my blog.

Lately it seems that the down is becoming more and more frequent.

Those good service and reliability reviews you are reading are not applicable to the new hardware or company you are dealing with. This is Hostgator in name only. Endurance bought the name and cut costs across the board resulting sluggish service, software bugs, long customer service time waits, and regular downtime.

I host Public School District Websites, eCommerce Web applications, and many back-end services for a security monitoring company. These can not go down, and the second they do our phones blow up. I was forced to move all my sites to Firehost, who have yet to go down. If you can not afford downtime, expectantly during a weekday (when they love to do maintenance), do not use Hostgator.

Hostgator has been my first experience with a paid hosting service and a good one at that.

As soon as I published my website and linked the domain (which was extremely fast by the way. It only took 1 hour!), it immediately started working, and only 4 hours later we started getting traffic.

Wordpress worked spectacularly with it. I had no problems making any changes or adding any functions to the site at all.

It's been 3 months and not ONCE have I seen it down. In that time I only had 1 single problem (I couldn't auto-update or install Wordpress plugins) and I called them, 30 minutes later the problem was solved. And everything for an amazing price! I didn't even feel the money go at all!

Having been a customer for over 5 years I was one super happy customer but now I am complaining like crazy . I truly depended on their support but their support desk has gone down the tubes. Chat wait times I have encountered are 18 - 30 minutes before most I ever waited was 5 minutes and to solve a problem, it was usually done same day 20 minutes but they always solved m problem. Now they take for ever to answer and they don't answer the question I gave them.
Specifically on my last call

Wait time on Chat was 30 minutes. Tried twice I gave up and submitted a ticket.
24 hrs later ticket never answered otherthenm the automated one that said nothing.
Next DAY Went back on chat . Wait time 6 minutes to get password reset.

Then the reason I went on was to chg disk space for one website. I get a password reset because no one can tell me why password change. I use roboform etc so i know I did not change it. But I get it changed and I go to use a command I have been using for years and command does not work.

30 minutes later or whatever time the support person doesn't tell me tells me I can't use change disk quota command anymore but instead they told me some other way to do it

Not the way i wanted to and have been doing it for years. so I specifically asked why not.

Is the command broken? . Why does it not work and they would not answer. It was worst call ever in years and years.

So instead of me being able to get a password reset 1 - 2 minutes and a disk change- 30 seconds, it took 2 days,

A ticket that was never answered (until a day after I did the chat call on day 2) and over 30 minutes on a 2nd chat to get at max 5 minutes of work done.

I look like crap to my customer because I couldn't make a change on same day

On top of that I have no idea why my password stopped working in the first place. It was never explained. or a reasonable answer given like they use to.

The support provided which was normally a 5 minutes call was not. It was horrible horrible. I hope some one fixes it as I use to give 10 to 12's and rave about support now its a 5. Something has gone horrible wrong with Hostgator support desk.
I can't recommend them like I use to because I need to see better support because that makes all the difference.

I have been using Hostgator for more than 4 years. They use to offer very good customer support but now are too big for their own good and one problem here or there does not bother them that much. I have recently purchased two new packages. I had problems every time. First my usal account was compromised when someone got it and damage our databases. The password to Control Panel was complex but I suspect their security is not too good. "You will beed a web person to sort out this mess" said the customer support person after waiting 30 minutes and spending almost an hour with them chatting on-line.
When I got the new packages, I inmediately got something up to create a new site. One day after I got the first files, Hostgator cuts the service to display an "under maintenance" page. I thought hackers go in again but the service was discontinued and I am still trying to find out the reason. After so many years with them I expected a better treatment btu after all the problems I had - there is more that will not fit here - I can only say: do not use Hotsgator. I suspect security is low, you may lose all your work and customer support is bad.

When I first joined hostgator about 5 years ago it was excellent, I have both a baby account and a silver reseller level account. I had no problems really in 5 years other than an occasional wordpress plugin using too much CPU but hostgator would contact me and I would sort it out.
Something drasticly changed about mid year 2013 when the support side of things went to complete shit with hostgator. I used to be able to get them on the phone or jump into chat support and sort any issue out quickly.. Now it takes 20-30 minutes for them to come onto chat support which crashes at least 80% of the time so you have to wait another 20-30 minutes to get someone and hope that the chat wont crash again and then they finnaly do come on they want nothing more to get off the chat and make you use the support tickets which can site for days without anyone replying and when they do reply its a short reply that does not address the questions or issues.
ALso rather than alert you if theres a problem on your account they now choose to block your domain, this is unacceptable if your a reseller and you find out from your clients that their entire domain has been blocked for no apparant reason and then you discover a short support message that simply tells you your domain is blocked for using too much CPU..

Over the past week all domains (70 odd) in my reseller account are having constant slow loading and connnection issues, not a single domain has had a problem for almost 5 years but suddenly all of them are and hostgator support can only say you have too many wordpress plugins, install caching and remove unrequired plugins..

SO they claim that suddenly for no reason sites that have functioned as they are for 5 years have too many plugins and require caching...

I recommend anyone thinking about a new hosting account to avoid hostgator and the other hosting companies associated with them such as bluehost etc as they no longer care about you or your domains...

HostGator has been a leader in the hosting industry for years now, which is why I expected a great experience with them. Those expectations were not met.

Everyone flocks to these industry leaders because they're big companies and people figure bigger is better. Personally, I've been through many different types of hosts, and the best experiences I've had were with the really tiny companies with only a few people running everything. I feel it's that way because the small companies desperately want to keep every customer they have, so they try to tailor the experience more towards those customers, and are able to look past "procedure" every now and then. HostGator cares deeply about its procedure, and not so much about its customers feeling comfortable.

I ordered they're most expensive shared hosting plan, because it had the most/best features. For the first day, everything worked fine. I was in cPanel setting up FTP and email accounts, waiting for the ability to update my nameservers. The very next day, I was unable to login to cPanel or their Billing control panel. As it turns out, my account needed to be verified. I tried replying several times informing them that I do not have a government-issued ID and that I do not feel comfortable doing business by phone. All I got in response was the same email over and over again, asking me to verify by phone or with a government-issued ID. At this point, it was already days later and since I couldn't login to cPanel, I had already ordered hosting from another provider and decided to cancel HostGator. I put in my request for cancel, and got a reply saying there's no need for me to cancel, since all I have to do is verify my account. Again I replied that it's not possible for me and have not heard back at all since then.

HostGator is a leader in the industry, which is exactly what gets them a failing grade in my book.

Hostgator has been a positive surprise after a terrible experience with another host. I haven't had a hosting related problem ever since. From the day I decided to move my 60 sites to hostgator I have been disappointed. I picked them as a host because they said they would help facilitate the move from my other host and they seemed to have good packages. They started off our relationship by sending me all the wrong account passwords and logins. Then they proceeded to move the domains but leave the SSL certs behind (had clearly requested this) Then finally when nothing was working properly and I said I wanted to cancel they assigned someone to fix it. Each time there was a problem I spent hours (no exaggeration) on the phone trying to get things resolved. The only person that really was helpful was the cancellation department. They seemed to have the power to push things along and get things fixed. Finally everything seems to be up and running but people continually have email issues. Most of my clients are moving to other mail servers now. Two weeks ago I had to transfer my final site left on my other server. They still haven't gotten it right! I have spent at least 10 hours on the phone trying not to scream at them. Their system is messed up. They keep putting you on hold, takes hours to get to a supervisor and then they just put you on hold to review the ticket AGAIN! They assigned an IP address that wasn't routed to my server, not once but TWICE and then had to assign another one which still hasn't resolved. Are you kidding me? I would never recommend them.

I pay top dollar for both a business and personal plan with Hostgator. The hosting is expensive and the reason I paid more is at the time they were the best out there. After using them for about 6 years they made some major changes and started using another data center and since that time it has been horrific. Constant down time that sometimes last for days at a time. Hosting is not rocket science and a site should never be down for days or realistically even minutes. Load times for sites that would normally take 2 seconds were taking 30 or more and timing out constantly as it appeared they had overloaded servers that were spamming and bogging down the system. Many times I would try to load my sites and get 404 errors or other errors that if a customer sees makes your site look horrible and obviously causes tons of lost business. These types of constant down times will also affect your sites SEO greatly so that is another issue. If google goes to spider your site and there is a 404 error constantly it does not bode well for your SEO. In the last 4 months or so I have sent in at least 30 tickets for help and the 5 years prior had done maybe 5 just to show where they have gone.

Today as an example all my sites are down with 404 errors, no cpanel, no answers on the customer service phone and live chat just disconnects you after wait times of 25 minutes or more. I did another ticket today (Monday) and all I got was "we are working on this, sorry".
I encourage anyone to go to sites like isitdownrightnow and you will see dozens of postings about these recent issues.

I normally never write bad reviews but I feel people should be aware of this major problem. Many reviews on here seem scripted but I can assure you this one is real.

I chose HostGator because it had good reviews.

For the first 24 hours, those reviews seemed accurate.

Not knowing a lot about web hosting, I sat down with live-chat support for almost two hours until I grasped everything perfectly.

This was one WEEK ago. I emphasize this because since then, I have not been able to use my account.

Why? I wake up the next morning and I have a support ticket in my inbox that says that I now need to send them over a picture of my driver's license or Passport.

Just that and nothing more.

I try to log into my account, but my password doesn't work. I try to reset it, but the new passport doesn't work either.

After several attempts, I finally get into my account only to find an error message "You have a billing issue (the requirement for personal verification) pending. E-mail billing@hostgator.com for support."

It took me a few tries but I finally realized that my account had been LOCKED DOWN. They locked down my account while asking for verification. They let me use the site for 24 hours, they let me talk to customer support for 2 hours and get everything just the way I like it.. and then they lock down my account without a hint.

So, I had only one option - reply to the ticket for verification. However, not having a Driver's License nor a Passport, I asked if I could use another kind of ID.

This is where everything went wrong. It took them 4 DAYS to respond. Yes, that's right. A web host that honors itself on its 99.9% uptime let my account remain locked down without a response for 100 HOURS while nothing in the background was even happening.

I finally received a reply telling me what to do, and I did it. After that, I waited and waited for ANOTHER 3 DAYS before another reply came in. They wanted clarification about the ID, so I sent it in.

After waiting another 2 days, I decided to edit the ticket to say that whether they accept the ID or not, I want a full refund.

Hazza hazaa, only 12 hours after asking for the refund, I received it. Thank God.

I have absolutely no idea why I was treated this way, but it is beyond unacceptable. HostGator is in dire need of reviewing their verification/hiring policies.

But either way, I will NEVER use their services again.

I wish i had known that hostgator doesn't care that your a client, but your a number to them...

They have ignored a lot of my support queries which is very worrying, and the servers are overfilled - Load levels are always high on the servers.

Host gator always treated me like a number via support ticket or email ( thats when they did reply ).

They also have a strange billing policy - If your american your account can out of date by up to 6 months. However if your international and from another country well - If your away from the country and don't pay your bill for 2 months you get disconnected without phone call, without notice ( only one email ).

The live chat support is very arrogant, if they don't have an answer they simply just tell you to visit their website which is downright shocking and rude.

I would not recommend hostgator to anyone, once upon a time they were a nice webhost and they treated you like a person - Now your treated like numbers its disgusting.

When you buy hosting you dont want to be treated like another customer, like another number signing up. You want them to treat you as a human being, a person - a client who is making them money.

Hostgator has no respect for its customers.

I have been a HostGator customer for about a year now, their hosting is pretty good. Uptime has been great, my account has only been down once, but was quickly back up. Their support is friendly, and helpful. They can't help you build your site, which is fine because they're for hosting not site building - but they do offer tools like Weebly and wordpress, which are both easy to use.

I had a lot of questions when I first signed up, but when I talked to their chat support the agent was very helpful and gave me a lot of good links to look at later. I love their support and don't have any issues with them at all. I recommend their hosting to everyone!

I wanted to love HostGator. They are right down the street ( literally) but I can't. I signed on with HostGator and moved my domain name to them as the registrar at the same time. I've had my email managed via Google so I did NOT take those services.
I tried all their tools but could never get the Visual Site to actually load my site. I fooled around and just posted something via the ftp access.
The following year, I received my hosting and domain renewal which I paid. I decided to try a new site with the WordPress option. I picked a theme, it set itself up .. all was happy. Two months later, I received notice that my EMAIL through them had been hacked via the WordPress. It took me escalating to a supervisor to get it through their thick skulls that I did NOT have any email hosted via them and if they were allowing spoofs of my domain using their servers.. this was unacceptable and they should just turn off the email functions. They finally did. In the meantime, I took the site down in frustration. Fast Forward 6 months ( and no site up due to other issues).
I received my second years renewal, I paid it. Imagine my horror when my domain name lapsed. It seems they changed software and some people just "got caught in the transfers". Due to the lapse, my email was down and I lost a business deal that meant alot to me. It took 5 days to get my domain names straightened out. I left hostgator very unhappy.
They seem to be an ok host but can't manage the domain name registrar portion of their business. They accidentally changed my MMX records 4 months after I renewed my domain. Why ? Because they couldn't find my host account anymore so they just assumed the mmx records were wrong.

They are probably best for someone who has more patience than I do but not for beginners. I hosted my own site for 13 years and this was my first hosting experience.
I have friends who use them with no issues.

Hostgator is not a very good hosting company which I think they are spoilt for clients. My friend and I started up a website (epic3ds.com), we paid for the year via PayPal and we hosted our project which were going fine for the first fifteen. Then after the (about) 17th day, we had been suspended for "using too much bandwidth" when we only used about 100mb for the two months as we hadn't opened up yet. So I was on the phone for a long time finally I had my money returned, but the support was horrible. They kept on saying that you have past your thirty day guarantee, even though I were about seventeen days in.
My friend and I were very upset because our files were also cleared.

I've had my personal website with HostGator for just over a year now, and I am pleased to recommend them to anyone looking for a host.

In the year they have hosted my site, I have only seen it down 4 times, one time because of my error.

The support is ok, but there is quite a bit of room for improvement. When my site was under a DDOS attack, they tried to force me onto a dedicated server plan, which costs a lot more than hosting. Other than that, they've been very helpful whenever I need it.

Plans come with CPanel as standard, which is extremely easy to use; even for people who only know how to open a word document or an internet browser. The website builder is amazing if you don't know HTML to make your own.

HostGator is suitable for people of all abilities and organizations of all sizes. Their plans are perfectly balanced for only what you would need.

The price is outstanding. If you only earned $2 a week you could afford this every month. I've never had issues paying for my plan.

Overall, hostgator has to be the best host I've used in the 4 years I've been hosting a website, and I hope to stick with them for a while longer.

When I started with them in 2011 ish their support was fast and reliable. Sadly over the 2 years I've been with them, their customer service has gone downhill. Wait times of 20-30 minutes are common and tech knowledge levels have gone down too.

Pricing is OK, unless you throw in their (hidden) inode limits which make it impossible to completely fill the space you pay for. They never told me about that upfront.

I have an ecommerce website with 150+ products and it is asp.net based. I moved to Host Gator (HG) from GoDaddy because suddenly GoDaddy was unable to keep my site up after hosting it successfully for 3+ years (I had not made any major changes to the site when this happened). GoDaddy admitted they moved me to an older Windows server and when they did that, things went downhill.

The first HG red flag was when I first moved to them and they forgot to transfer my databases from GoDaddy. My site was up and running with HG successfully for a week, so I downloaded all my files from GoDaddy and canceled my GoDaddy account.

My site went down instantly, and I discovered HG's problem. It took quite an effort for HG to get my site running again (several days). My technical person was extremely frustrated with their inability to understand his simple instructions.

Everything ran fine for weeks and I was really happy with the increased speed I was experiencing. Then the nightmare...HG moved my site to another server in Provo, Utah and the site has been down at least 3 times since this move about 1 1/2 months ago. It was down for 5 days, then 3 days, then another 3 days, and the next thing you know I stopped receiving my emails from my primary biz account (for 6 days).

Each time was a nightmare getting the site back up. Each time HG refused to take any responsibility for the site going down--it was my fault because they sent me an email notifying me that my IP address had changed and it was my programmer's fault because he shouldn't have the IP address in the code. As it turned out, because of some database thing, the IP address does have to appear in the code. HG ignored it when I made that comment because then they couldn't blame me any longer.

Their customer service is totally frustrating. I still have many of the records to prove it. Their front line (phone and chat) have little capability to do anything. The best they can do is escalate the problem to the back end techies. You can't talk to the back end techies--you can communicate with them through tickets, but they are extremely slow to answer tickets--who can wait when your web store is completely down?

The time it was down for 5 days they lied to me on day 1 saying it would be up in 1 hour. On day 3, when it was still not up, the front end guy said, "The techie (whatever they call them) is telling me it will be up in 1 hour." I told him the techie was lying to him because he had told me the same thing 2 days earlier. Somehow after understanding I was not going to just go away, the front end guy was able to do something that got me up and running again.

I don't have a technical background so I can't recall all the details of the huge string of problems I have had with HG's hosting, but when I say "nightmare," I mean the worst nightmare I've ever dreamed in 4 years of being hosted.

I honestly can't believe how clueless HG is about customer service. They have a knack for telling you just the wrong thing that tests one's ability to remain calm and collected. The most frustrating is their lies to avoid their responsibilities and their incredible ability to avoid taking responsibility--not even one apology did I receive for what they did to my SEO and reduced visits on my site.

I thank whoishosting this for enabling me to provide this review. Hopefully others will benefit by avoiding the terrible frustrations I have been through with HG. I think HG's growth curve is just outrunning their ability to keep up.

To be charitable, they're buggy. Perfectly simple and correct script syntax fails with absurd errors.

I've been using and recommending hostgator for about five years. BUT that is all stopping now. In the last month I have received horrible service from them across several different accounts. I am a web designer and I help my clients with their hosting issues. Recently I've had several sites (each with a totally different configuration - different CMS, everything) become unusually slow. Most of them have recently been migrated to a new server by hostgator. As other reviewers have said, hostgator denies any issues, gives you unhelpful advice, or doesn't reply at all. In one case, they took a client's site offline for 8 hours and wouldn't respond to any customer service inquiries at all.

Stay away!! Ignore all the reviews from before 2013 - this company has changed, they are not what they used to be.

Our software/webdesign business relies completely on our hosting provider. We have had NOTHING but problems!! HostGator is the WORST internet service provider EVER! 2 weeks ago I received an email notifying me that our SSL was due to expire. I contacted support the only way they allow, through chat. They don't have an account I can access online and renew things like this.However, I was assured by the chat representative that it was renewed. NO! IT WAS NOT! Now 2 weeks later and 6 additional chat sessions later our SSL is now expired, NOT renewed and completely fubar'd!! They have finally escalated it to a higher representative but do I receive a phone call? NO! I have to wait for an freaking email!!

My name is Geo. Last year i purchased a pachage of hosting from Hostgator for one of my projects. Ofcourse at that time all services were great but this year when i purchased again a pachage from them i was stupefied about their services now. After 1 day in which my site was ok ,i receive a mail from them about identity verifycation. All ok ,i send them the documents requested and after confirmation from them i received another mail in which they "recomend" me to switch to vps from shared. Why ? Their answer was that my site (a wordpress blog 2 days old) was too much for their shared plans. I didn't even have time to send them a ticket to ask about this and my site was already suspended. Anyway.. when i send them the tickets to answer me why i need vps and provide me with server consum (cpu/ram) on shared, they didn't even bother to provide proof and their answers were sent after 8 or 9 hours... their support was terrible.. i never waited a day for an answer on any other hosting. Not to say that my money payed for the shared pachage were never refunded!
After this experience with Hostgator i will never buy anything from them and i will never recomend their hosting!

I have been a customer for many years with many servers linked to Hostgator.

Unfortunately i have been on the receiving end of poor server many times and i really regret having moved my domains to Hostgator.

1. Poor Online Support - takes hours of online support to get simple tasks seen to.
2. Setup of server - be specific because they don't care and set a basic box and only until you are about to loose data over being hacked do they step in.
3. Simple requests are always carried out incorrectly.

The migrated data servers (9/4/13) without any DNS redirects, so I couldn't access the data on the new machines for 4 hours (only 4 hours because my business closed after that; who knows how long it went on for??)

Today (9/6/13) the site was online, but anyone wanted to access my site had to supply MY ADMIN username/password. Needless to say, no one could use the site.

I checked my websites because I had received a call that one of my pages was giving a weird error. Upon checking, ALL of my domains were giving a cryptic error about updating dns, with no other information.

I can't get to cpanel, or anything, all of it down.

I attempt to contact them with their online chat.

At first there is complete deny-ability, they don't want to acknowledge anything.

Next, they blame it on my domain registration and dns hosting. I remind them that this has been working as is since 2008, albeit with them changing ip's on me at least twice, which I suspect is the issue again.

The "support tech" just insisted that I "had" to use them for dns or it wouldn't work. She couldn't explain why it had been working for 5 years without their dns servers. My answer is if you can't even maintain a simple http server, why would I trust you with dns, which my email depends on.

Finally after over thirty minutes of this online chat, they finally acknowledge that the IP address of the server I'm on had changed (again??). They couldn't explain why.

I asked why I wasn't notified and again, they are clueless at first, then come back and insisted I was notified.

I asked how, the support system told me its in their ticket system. I asked how I was supposed to get to this ticket system (there is a link on cpanel, which of course isn't working) when I can't get to ANYTHING. Then they tried to tell me that they had emailed me multiple times about the issue. I asked for server logs or ANY proof that they had emailed me, they were not able to provide anything, no server logs, not even a time the email supposedly went out.

So, their final answer to me was that I was supposed to log into some buried website that showed support tickets for a ticket that I hadn't been notified of, and was issued less than a week before the problems (what, am I supposed to log into their system daily to check for their screwups??).

This was an absolute lack of communication and nothing but deny-ability on hostgators side. All it would have taken is a simple email from them a few days before the changes and this whole situation would have been avoided.

At this point, upper management refuses to address this. I've asked for the involvement of someone multiple times now. I'm blocked on the phone (they refuse to pass the call), and via email I'm simply told they won't pass it on up. They have also not done anything to make this right with me, despite their lack of coordination causing several days downtime.

As many have said, Hostgator used to be good. We have been there for five years. It is now completely unreliable for a business AND also for email. We have lost emails due to down time, and have had downloading problems. Support has no clue what the problem is. I am a current VPS customer with hostgator and have been for the past 3 years, for 2 years prior I was a shared hosting customer. I moved to VPS when my site was extremely slow on hosting, which is understandable because my site is very SQL heavy; it's an educational school with many users at one time.

Support:
To be honest, Hostgator support has been friendly and relatively knowledgeable 90% of the time on PHONE or TICKET support. If I get a slower tech person on the phone, I usually hang up on them within 1 minute and submit a ticket or call back; every time I've called back I ended up with a smarter tech support person and every ticket I've ever entered has been fixed within a day.

The chat support is where the slower tech employees work, the chat support has never fixed an issue of mine.

Uptime:
My site is up all the time, except when they migrated me to a new server. I had a few issues during server migration which took a while to fix but it went up the chain to a person who knew what was going on and it was fixed.

Speed:
My sites load very quickly under the VPS plan and the support has even helped me out before in optimizing performance. The hosted plan didn't load so quickly if I remember correctly.

I personally feel as if hostgator is the best hosting company for me. I will likely be moving to multiple dedicated servers with them in the next year as business expands.

I have been a dedicated server client for about five years now. When we first started, it was great. The service was great, the blogs from the CEO were awesome and everything was well.

Then, Hostgator was bought out by Endurance International Group. The server farm was moved and all of a sudden our server would drop offline and experience outages. It was daily, and devastating. They only offered somewhat reasonable tweets as to the status of the service.

Their service has been terrible since the buyout. Slow response times, worse entry level tech support and just a poor moral of the company.

I don't advise them in the current state, as I am in the process of migrating our dedicated server somewhere else.

I used to say hostgator were amazing, however over the last 6 months we've had constant issues and poor customer/technical service from them, mostly with canned responses which do not provide support.

After spending countless hours trying to get the issues resolved, we decided to move elsewhere, having been with them for several years, its unfortunate that it came to this.

Downtime mostly came in the last 6 months and became much worse since they moved our hosting to a new server, along with this new FTP restrictions meant that it was difficult to upload / download a single file, let alone the 6 file at a time limit they put in place.

The canned responses from the support teams got so ridiculous, that when I had contacted them for one last time, specifically saying this is the last time I'm offering the chance to fix everything and that canned responses were not the answer, they gave me a canned response.

Maybe it was meant to be a joke, but i'm afraid with 6 month of issues and poor service, that joke ended up being on them.

I have been a hostgator customer since 2006, and they have in the past been the best hosting company I have every used - great features, great price, great support, great reliability. However, they recently migrated me to a new server. Ever since then they have been useless. They claimed that my site was suddenly consuming massive amounts of CPU. It's the same site as before, and has never had any problems before. They took my business web site down for days at a time, loosing me money. Support were unwilling to consider that it was anything other than my fault, and were incredibly slow at responding. A 2 day ticket response when your site is down is not acceptable. They also failed to renew my ssl certificate, meaning people could not shop for a few days. Basically they have become a disgrace in the past few months. A bit of research shows that they were sold to another company (EIG) in mid 2012, and since then they have been going down hill. I'm afraid that EIG are changing the way hostgator works, and it's definitely not worth hosting with them any more.

Only problem was php/cpanel/server upgrades, but that is to be expected as you cannot update something and thin its going to work while doing so but they always notify me weeks ahead of time so I can let me members know of the upcoming downtime.

I have a Reseller server at HostGator and a dedicated server. I have been using HostGator for years, and up to the recent sale of the company, they were a great hosting company. Now they truly suck.

I have experienced the "DNS propagation" runaround with 3 different domains that I pointed at my HostGator server. At one time, I had over 80 domains at HostGator, and it never took more than 10 minutes or so for the domain to be useable. With these 3 domains, the routine was always the same. Support refused to even look at the problem for 24 hours. After 24 hours they insisted I wait another 24 hours because the Internet "might be busy". 3 days later they were still insisting that DNS propagation was the problem. It was only when I demanded a supervisor that the internal problem they had, but refused to look for, was fixed.

I recently purchased a dedicated server from them, and it was, and still is, a horrible experience. We were running on a VPS server and HostGator said moving everything to the dedicated server would be done. Fortunately, I did not switch the DNS after they told me the server was set up. They gave me an empty server. I complained and they finally, after two days, moved the data. That was just the beginning of the nightmare that still continues.

The could not get our email working and finally suggested we use port 597 for SMTP. No explanation, but the email more or less worked sometimes.

The real disaster came when our main site suddenly showed an older version of the site that used a completely different WordPress theme. I asked support why they restored an old backup without notifying me first, and they said they did not back up dedicated servers, so they could not have restored one. I pointed out that server corruption didn't usually result in a 100% functional, but older version of the site.They washed their hands of the situation.

So, they destroyed our main site and forced us to create another.

The lesson here is that if you don't mind having to constantly be sure that your hosting company isn't wrecking your business, then HostGator might be for you.

If you don't mind a support group that no longer seems to know what their company does or how things work, then HostGator might be for you.

If you don't mind a hosting company that focuses more on excuses than results, HostGator might be for you.

We are leaving as soon as I can find a reliable host for both of my servers.

HostGator recently sold out to Endurance International Group. Since then, it has been nothing but chaos. The servers are extremely oversold now. Roughly 6TB worth of users data thrown on one server. Non-standard /home1 /home2 and /home3 partitions used due to the massive overselling.

Additionally, EIG is now moving all of HostGator's operations to their Provo datacenter. Since then, there has been somewhere in the ballpark of 12 hours of downtime, and requests for a refund have gone ignored.

I had been a satisfied customer of Host Gator for the past three or so years. Good up and down speeds, unlimited storage and other features that put it on part with other hosting companies for a competitive or better rate. We've run up to seven sites on a shared hosting plan and for what we use them for this has been more than adequate.

The last two weeks have been an absolute nightmare. I have reamed, some truly deserving, tech support chat "bots", over the course of the last couple of weeks. Before that questions were usually answered quickly and efficiently. Chat was the most expedient way to get answers, at least it is easier to vent via a keyboard when customers are in our store. I have enough networking background to not accept what ever the answer de jur' is, I know how this should work on both ends.

I understand the need to upgrade equipment and firmware. Evidently finding good help for Host Gator has been an issue of late because for a company hosting 9 M in domains you would hope that getting it right the first time would be a priority. There support script needs some work too, I have been able to at least get one of their tech support persons to not give me canned answers.

Right now our domains are all up, a little slow at times. The mail servers for whatever reason don't allow access via mail client so I am stuck with a next to useless web mail client. That is infuriating. Whether I remain with Host Gator depends on how well they take ownership of my experience. Otherwise I am open to suggestions.

Hostgator is taking a page out of Godaddy and the elephant killing episode. The data center servers were a mess on Friday causing some of our website contents to be lost, I requested that the website be restored as it was Friday Morning and the response I got is that there is $15 fee!

The worst webhost ever! They migrated my website to a new server without my consent, this resulted in two days work correcting all the associated problems : email had to be resetup, all my FTP sites had to be resetup company wide, and I had to change our DNS which resulted in downtime of our website. If that wasn’t bad enough our website’s pages were taking up to 30 seconds to load!! The support at Hostgator just ignored the problem, saying that we needed to optimize our website to fix the problem. What a joke, the site worked fine until they moved it.
That’s not all, it took 5 weeks to move three domain names to their servers. Yes, you read that right, a task that should have taken a couple days at most.
Their shared servers are incredibly slow. Don’t take my word for it, look at the numbers on sites that are not rigged with bogus reviews about hostgator. The uptime of 99% never happens, just use one of the free webhost monitors.
They also forget to tell you when you sign up for the “unlimited” package on a shared server that you can only have 25 users or processes at the same time. This means that if someone is checking their email that’s one process, if someone is accessing FTP that’s another, if someone is on the website- still another. You can do the math from there, IT’S NOT UNLIMITED! What results if you even have normal usage is that users are locked out from email usage, FTP usage, and potential customers are greeted with a domain error.
On top of it all they have the worst support imaginable for anything tougher than an email that won’t work. The party line is to make the customer feel that everything is their fault.
Do yourself a favor, go elsewhere.

I started with HostGator a couple of years ago. It seems that they have taken a nosedive and now have pretty bad tech support and their servers continue to go down contantly. I am migrating my sites to a new server; but migration has been tough since the servers keep having issues or going down.

The CEO of the company is arrogant and doesn't take any responsibility for the company errors. I was being overcharged for a year and when they refused to refund me I had to file a complaint to the BBB where they agreed to refund me, but I got a message from the CEO basically telling me I was wrong.

I will never recommend this hosting to anyone. Their prices used to be the lowest for VPS but now they are not even the lowest.

First off the things they do well:
The support is great, I feel like their chat representatives offer their time freely and are both polite and as helpful as possible.
The features provided are a strong set and make installation easy. In particular the automated installers can make setup a breeze. Automated backup is a nice feature, and in general the system is powerful and easy to use (cPanel).

That being said.....
Speed is terrible on the shared hosting plans. We've made some changes because we use a PHP based CMS (could easily have been slowing things down) but the slow part of the page load is connecting to and then waiting on the HostGator servers.
Uptime is technically fairly high but their DNS servers are down right now. I'll say that again: their DNS servers are down right now. This wouldn't bother me quite as much if they didn't prevent you from using external DNS secondary and tertiary servers as much as possible! They actually explicitly recommended that I not use them, and then go down a few weeks later!
We have had many outages while using them, I haven't stopped to calculate total uptime but it feels like much too often.

Cut to the present: They claimed they are "migrating" my and my clients' sites to "faster" servers, TEN TIMES faster, in fact! Well, the sites all went down and it took me hours of online chats to find out the new IPs and fix all the issues.

But that's not the worst of it. Today, their chat doesn't work. Their 1-800 number has a busy signal, and 2 of my client sites are down. This is the second time this week for the one that is still down. Not only has it been down - but when it's up, it's super sloooooow. They can't figure out why that is, either.

HostGator was listed as one of the top 5 hosting companies and I did my homework before using them. Now I will have to endure the long, arduous process of moving to another hosting company, which will again cost me hours and hours of time.

I would never ever ever recommend HostGator to anyone and they have embarrassed me in front of my clients.

I registered with Hostgator last year and chose their baby plan and after my 1 year experience I will share pros and cons that I have experienced being their customer.

Pros:
1. They have a great support that responds to you quick and tries to solve your problem as soon as possible.
2. Their cPanel is amazing. It is quite comprehensive and user friendly. Being new to website building, I had no problem creating my website with them.
3. They have video tutorials that guide you step by step in setting up your website.
4, This hosting provider is best for large website that have hundred of pages as you will never experience any kind of slow bandwidth.

Cons:
1. Though their support is great and quick but it would be better if they are available on chat support 24/7.
2. They have a bit expensive plans. Today we can find many hosting providers as low as $1/month. They should consider dropping their rates.

At the end I will highly recommend hostgator to every one who is reading this review especially the new webmasters as they will be guided comprehensively by Hostgator support team.

Recently Hostgator migrated my VPS server to a new one with little notice. I have had multiple issues with these guys and their customer support is non existent. It's been days and they have not gotten back to me yet. They claim to be fast but can't even do something as simple as canceling an account.

Have a problem with your site? Don't bother contacting support. You will be told there's nothing they can do and they will create a ticket that never gets a response. Yet they have no problem charging for the site you can't use.

I have a cancellation that's been open for days (ticket wise).

I've gotten calls for the site I asked to be canceled. The call was for someone who's been assigned to help my site get started. Why would I get a call for a site I told them cancel? So they have time to call and bug me but not do what I asked.

I tried activating a new site (like they told me to) and it failed. Instead of foxing the issue (their dashboard says the site was failed to be delivered), they created a ticket in their system and then ignored it. Days later i still don't have a working site and no response from support.

I would recommend running away from this company as fast as you can. It's not worth the time and effort just to get a working site.

Customer service is about as bad as I've ever experienced.
* Long wait times. I've waited over an hour, just for someone to pick up. Thankfully I make my calls on Skype and can work while I wait, but totally unacceptable.
* Lack of energy on the other end. When I do get in touch with a support agent, the overall tone is drab and lackluster. I picture them slouched, and practically sliding downward on their chairs as they talk to me on the line.
* Mistakes. They always make stupid mistakes. Asking them a simple request like, please change the name server to... they can't even do that. We even paid them to migrate web content from one site to another and they ended up migrating content from one site... to the very same site. Unbelievable.
* When asked if I could speak to a supervisor, I got a sigh and was told that it's not possible. Because they only communicate via chat. When I insisted, I was put on an 18 minute wait and someone who sounded exactly like the person I was originally talking to answered and didn't seem to care at all about my feedback. Gave me some lame, insincere apologies. It was like talking to a pile of mud.

Avoid this company at all costs. Trust me on this.

The worst webhost ever! They migrated my website to a new server without my consent, this resulted in two days work correcting all the associated problems : email had to be resetup, all my FTP sites had to be resetup company wide, and I had to change our DNS which resulted in downtime of our website. If that wasn’t bad enough our website’s pages were taking up to 30 seconds to load!! The support at Hostgator just ignored the problem, saying that we needed to optimize our website to fix the problem. What a joke, the site worked fine until they moved it.

That’s not all, it took 5 weeks to move three domain names to their servers. Yes, you read that right, a task that should have taken a couple days at most.

Their shared servers are incredibly slow. Don’t take my word for it, look at the numbers on sites that are not rigged with bogus reviews about hostgator. The uptime of 99% never happens, just use one of the free webhost monitors.

They also forget to tell you when you sign up for the “unlimited” package on a shared server that you can only have 25 users or processes at the same time. This means that if someone is checking their email that’s one process, if someone is accessing FTP that’s another, if someone is on the website- still another. You can do the math from there, IT’S NOT UNLIMITED! What results if you even have normal usage is that users are locked out from email usage, FTP usage, and potential customers are greeted with a domain error.

On top of it all they have the worst support imaginable for anything tougher than an email that won’t work. The party line is to make the customer feel that everything is their fault.

Do yourself a favor, go elsewhere.

"There is a 500 hourly outgoing email limit per domain" This statement is false. - I only able to send 450 email on my hole account that very small quantity.

Host Gator use to be the best hosting provider in the world. NOT anymore, they are terrible! My sites load one moment at 2 seconds, while another moment over 60 seconds. Lots of database connection issues, lots of page not found issues. Believe me, its not my site ad they have told me in about 10 phone calls, support tickets, that they found an issue, another user using the resources, or issue with one of the nodes, and so on.

Now, how about that 20 - 30 minute wait for live chat, then when you get down to your turn, the darn thing does not work! What about the 30 - 40 minutes of waiting on the phone? My personal favorite,. the lack of experience their support team has and at times, causes more issues than the original issue.

If they do not straighten up VERY soon, I am leaving them. After reading all the comments and reviews here, I am sure I am not the only one. Just terrible all around. Worse hosting company ever, and its sad because they use to be the best!

My server has had issues for over a month since Hostgator migrated to a new server farm. Every day the site goes down multiple times. I have been trying to get a backup for weeks so I could move to a new host but they will not respond to that ticket. They only respond that it is our code that needs to be optimized and not their server. Funny since our site worked great before they migrated all of our sites. Furthermore, they didn't give us an option of migrating they just did it. Hostgator didn't allow time for testing and because they only moved the servers, not the IP's it took weeks for ISP's to update the new route to the server. Terrible company and expensive. I believe there are better options available and will move as soon as we can get a full backup.

HostGator (HG) support is terrible. I've been with them for 3 years and in the last year their support went straight downhill. The phone support is completely useless as the technicians know very little about the working of dedicated servers, so you need to have a great deal of expertise so you can tell them what to look for so they can fix the problem.

It can take up to 24 hours to get a response through their email ticket system, and by that time the site has long since been back in service, and HG has no explanation beyond some nonsense as to why it crashed in the first place.

Each time the site goes down I submit a ticket. Each time I wait. Each month I pay. No more. I have a web magazine that hosts 1.5 million unique visitors a month and I need reliable hosting. HostGator no longer offers reliable service. If you have a little blog and all you need is shared hosting you might be fine. But if you have a decent sized site, with over 10K archived posts, I cannot recommend HostGator.

Hostgattor used to to provide a good service years ago but recently they have been a total disappointment! I signed years ago for a reseller account. Whenever I had a question they used to reply quickly (even within minuets) but in recent years their service slowed down and sometimes I was waiting for more than 24 hours they to reply.

Recently I signed up for a second account which unfortunately did not work out for me so I had to cancel. Knowing they have 45 days money back guarantee I expected to get a full refund. However I was charged for 26 days of service and when I asked why they said:

"You created "your account" and used it for 26 days, Since you signed up in "year" the 45 day refund does not apply to that package so we deducted 26 days and refunded the unused portion. "

I started off with shared hosting, then moved on to a dedicated host, when I decided that this was a little bit overkill, I then purchased a VPS. So far and after reading some of the reviews, I find my self having to duplicate some of them in terms of:
1. Customer support; so far, I had no luck communicating with anyone.
2. Having to proof your identity, after using PayPal to pay, they insist on needing CC# used, I said no CC was used, but they couldn't understand what I meant, even-though it was all in plain English.
3. I had to send a copy of my ID, but was repeatedly asked for it, which made me uncomfortable about my identity.
4. Instead of reinstating my account and approve, they refunded my PayPal payment which they didn't even recognize from the beginning.
5. All tickets are automatically generated with no one ever reading them, at least this is how I felt.

The most irresponsible hosting provider ever to bless the internet.

I have been 95% happy with Hostgator for the last 10 years. "Not Anymore" I am -95% happy now.

Hostgator decided to migrate my VPS to a different data centre on a Friday evening with only 48 hrs notice. I didn't receive any email informing me of the move and this caused me major problems, as i use IP licensing on some of the domains. Now the problem with this is, when a server is migrated the IP changes, rendering the licenses useless. This irresponsible behaviour by a bunch of irresponsible linux admins cost me a fortune in license reissue's, not to mention the loss of customer revenue.

I asked Hostgator if they were going to reimburse my costs and they politely appologised and said NO, which is what i expected from them anyway.

I just can't describe in words without getting arrested for verbal abuse how unprofessional these bafoons are.

Stay clear of these amateurs, they are not worth the hassle even if they are one of the cheapest providers. You have been warned.

I have had my business site and several blogs hosted by HostGator under two accounts for several years and have not had any significant problems with their hosting. They have had excellent uptime (monitered by third party and well in excess of their guarantee).

On the several occasions that I have used their technical support for advanced configuration and for assistance with moving the blogs to their servers initially they have been extremely courteous and helpful every time. They actually moved my blogs from another hosting company and everything worked immediately other than a minor issue with a bridge plugin between Wordpress and Gallery 2 which required administrator rights on both to correct.

You really get no value for the Managed Windows Dedicated server.
We asked them to restart a server at 8pm, they have done it at 2am instead. When the server gave problems as expected, it took them almost until the end of next day to suggest IIS reinstall. When that didn't help, they suggested to switch to a new server, and it took them almost 2 hours to figures out that second drive does not have enough room for backup. The following morning the new server was up, but the main site on the server was not transferred, the sub domains were not created, and most importantly the database for the site was not transferred. 10 Hours later no response to my ticket. Called them 4 times, and got the usual run around. Horrible customer service.

HostGator was established more than a decade back. In Internet years, that’s a pretty long time, and they aren’t going anywhere!

Here’s a quick experience I had with them: I once did a WordPress update, and while it always tells you to backup your files before you do the update, I never used to do it. And then it happened that day. My WordPress theme got deleted. In a panicky state, I contacted the HostGator support team. Fortunately, they said they’ll do the backup. And while normally it costs $15 to do a backup, they were nice enough to do it for free for me.

Things I don’t like:

In my opinion, HostGator used to have the best customer support in the industry, and it wasn’t close. Starting in early 2013, I’ve seen noticeably longer wait times on the chat, and longer reply times on tickets. Their customer service is still relatively good, but not what it used to be. Not a biggie though, as they also have local and toll-free numbers to call. But yeah, the wait times, even if they are active 24/7, can be a bit irritating at times.
They can be extremely pricey without the use of coupons.
Their entry level package sucks! Why would anyone buy a hosting account where you can only host one domain? Stupid!
Their CMS script software is outdated. It seems everyone is moving to Softaculous, but HostGator is still stuck with QuickInstall. This is fine, you can still get your basics (i.e. WordPress, Joomla, Drupal), but I like Softaculous better.

I have 3 reseller accounts with HostGator. I have been with HostGator since Brent Oxley started the company 10 years ago.

In those days the service was phenomenal.. great uptime.. great support.. it was without a doubt the best hosting available anywhere on the Planet.

However.. since Brent sold the business about a year ago.. the service has deteriorated SUBSTANTIALLY.

Evidently the new owners are trying to increase profits by cramming too many accounts on a server.. hiring less knowledgeable (cheaper) support personnel.. and basically turning what had been a stellar hosting service into a pile of CRAP!

Don't understand why people make an investment of $225 million dollars to purchase a top notch business and then proceed to do everything possible to run it into the ground.

I have not had any issues with HostGator at all.
My websites are up all the time. Never have I tried to do anything and they weren't up.
I don't have to deal with customer support because their is nothing to bug them about.
I really like having cPanel, adding domains is very quick and easy.
By far the most reliable and fastest response time for my server-side software.
The only thing I would complain about is that the price went up almost $30/year after my first year, but quite honestly you get what you pay for and I do not mind paying for this service.

I have around 30 sites hosted with hostgator and moved from shared to VPS (They corrupted and lost several sites in the move, something they do for free!). Now they have done a migration to another server (not at my request just seems they felt like it) have lost another 5 sites. The sites in question will be impossible to recover. They also complained about over usage of space. Upon checking guess what Hostgator had left "Backup" copies of the restored files all over the drive.

Adding to that they don't seem to have a clue about accounts initially when they did a move they messed up the account names and then created several on the VPS. Ended up with 2 - 3 of the same sites under different accounts. Real mess

I have seen a lot of negative reviews for HostGator and have been a little confused on why. I have used this company now for five separate domains, all for different companies meaning they needed different accounts and have been nothing but pleased! They do require you to prove your identity, which is actually pretty re-assuring, but all I had to do is snap a picture of my license and the card I used with my phone and reply to the email. Easy as that. The customer service is unbelievable! As a web designer that's not quite good with back-end server management I have had to contact them a few times but every time I've done it I've learned a lot, very quickly. Nightmare! We have been on Host Gator for a little over a year. The 1st few months of service was excellent (I guess we can attribute this to the "honeymoon phase"). Our web-site ran smoothly with no down times. We were then notified that they were going to transfer our Web-site to a bigger faster server on 4/5/2013 which required our web-site to be shut down for a couple of hours. Once this was completed on that date we've had nothing but down times and countless hours on the phone with them trying to identify the problem. In the process, I have been loosing customers and loosing the confidence of my current customer base. People are beginning to think we have a Virus due to these down times. On 4/27/13 we awoke to yet another server down time on our Rainbow RV web-site and yet again on the phone for over 1hr. I have HAD IT WITH THE LIP SERVICE and their promises to fix it.

Down times are killing my business and would not recommend any high traffic web-site use them as a Host. Have no idea what happened to their new Servers because they don't work for large traffic Web-sites such as Rainbow RV's. I had been using hostgator services for past 10 years. However, since last few months I have found that this company has completely changed. The issues with this company are as follows:
1. File a support ticket and then wait for several hours - sometimes even more than 24 hours for them to respond.
2. Most of the time the support response indicates that inexperienced tech staff are deployed. Thus your support issue will remain unhandled for a couple of days.
3. Sometimes, when they tackle a particular issue, they create another issue due to lack of knowledge.
4. Their Live Chat never works.
5. There is no way for a customer to escalate matters to the senior management. It appears that the senior management are least bothered about their customers and so are the tech staff.

While I am gradually moving away all my accounts from this company, I would strongly advise any new customer to stay way from this company. They are no more the same as they were a couple of years back. Perhaps the departure of Brent Oxley from this company has ruined hostgator.

I have got some my additional domains parked on domain with phpld link directory. So i got from the letter:

"In order for us to consider this matter resolve, a valid license must be reported for all listed domains. Alternatively, the domains must not load any phpLD related content. "

After that i changed to redirection, as my domains have some traffic. So though as domain only redirect to one site it can not be considered as loading content.
Oh, how i was stupid....

"The redirection must lead to a non-phpLD related content. Currently it is still loading phpLD content and is considered infringing. "

After that i canceled all redirection and pointed domains to different sites. But hostgator without checking this blocked all account. Now about 10 hours, do not get any answer why my sites were blocked as all requirements were fulfilled.

So think well before choosing Hostgator as they do not think about customer. Just seeing in everyone a thief, a charlatan or a phony. Arrogant company...

Mandatory migration requested by Hostgator by email, we told them not to do the migration with out speaking to our Hosting manager. They did anyway and came back with a we're done message change your ip addresses. Which we couldn't access the control panel for a time and once we did the sites would load, responses to tickets were not answered all day, Finally got through on the phone, after 2 hours got someone that knew what they were doing and got sites back up 8 hours later.

Well nice surprise this morning, its ground hog day. Same issues we had experienced yesterday. Happening again today, Forbidden errors, load times over 60 seconds. After 30 mins on hold with chat and phone support and no response from email ticketing, get someone on the phone. Holding again now. Did I mention all the sites were all functioning properly before they did anything?

This coming 2 months after they took 3+ days to reimage an entire server due to the back up of our windows environment not being good. The support we received then was just as superlative, and by that I mean inept. Front line support just runs interference for those that "may" know what they are doing.

Hit and miss with the actual technical people our windows disaster I am confident went on so much longer than it needed to because the next tech would take over during his shift and would take us down the wrong path to restoring service. All weekend the data transfer to get the sites restore crawled with an estimated time being 7 days, then all of a sudden (shift change), the data was all transferred overnight. So if you'd like inept, slow, and overpriced service, go ahead with Host Gator.

Hostgator used to be awesome. So awesome that in 2006 after I started designing websites for other people that I bought a reseller account and referred everyone I knew to them.

I am not sure what's happened with their company since mid-2012. Their downtime has increased dramatically, their customer service isn't nearly so prompt or courteous, and my sites load slow.

It appears as if they overload their shared hosting servers, and if someone had told me that I should upgrade (eventhough I was only using 1/2 of my allotted resources as a reseller), I may have stuck with them and bought a VPS plan. However, their customer service appears lately to be handled with a cavalier attitude lately... and takes hours to respond to a site being down!

Needless to say, after more than 7 years, I'm divorcing from Hostgator and migrating to one of their competitors this week.

Hm, I am a customer of hostgator's. I have had nothing but good experiences with hostgator. You'll notice that most of these people giving bad ratings are complaining about " hostgator can't get this working for me " well, let's break that down. What does hostgator do? Hostgator is a webhosting company, that is responsible for keeping your server up and DNS records configured properly and provide the details of your server's information I.E. outgoing/incoming mailservers, what ports to use, what paths to use with your scripts.. and well, that's about it, but they typically will go above and beyond to help you, anything past that, is really outside of their scope of support, so they're actually trying to do you a favor. If you're too incompetent to use a script you want or a plug in, or to build your website the way you want, you should take a look in the mirror. These people have always been there for me, I may not always get something I want working but I don't blame them for it, if you want someone to hold your hand, find a web hosting company that incorporates development into their services, good luck.

I switched to HostGator from Webs several days ago, and as some of you may know, you don't have to know much about how websites work to use webs. When you go to a more technical host such as HostGator, it's a big change. I have slowly got used to the change and have learned quite a bit about how websites really work. I have had to use their live chat for support, and their support personnel are very helpful when it comes to your support needs.

The cPanel setup can be complicated to newcomers, but overall you can learn it after a few weeks. The website builder for me is a downfall. BaseKit may allow a modest amount of customization, but it's not as much as I was expecting, and it can get quite complicated and buggy. There is no real undo feature, so once you change several things, you're pretty much doomed. But, once you get used to it, you can create an operational website, though it may not look as good as you may have imagined you could accomplish.

Overall, for the price, I'd say it's a good choice. I hope they do switch sitebuilders in the future, but right now it seems unlikely, at least in the short term. I'd recommend them to experienced web designers, but I'd hold off if I were a newcomer, unless you're a faster learner that is.

I had a domain hosted with hostgator and later I worked for them, and even now I have several domains hosted through them. (I no longer worked for them).

As a customer service rep I didn't see ant unscrupulous behavior or practices. I saw an honest attempt at providing quality customer service. The servers were monitored around the clock and usually by the time a customer noticed an issue with the server and called in-the server was already being worked on- if not fixed.

I saw some complaints on here about Hostgator request for scanned ids etc. I've only see this occur when a red flag comes up and its only done to prevent fraud. I've had to deal with these calls and it has always been when a reasonable red flag was raised. To avoid this make sure you are at home or at least in your home state and use your own financial data when ordering.

Hostgator has its quirks, but overall its a good US company.

I've been with HostGator since 2007, after a string of disappointing hosting providers. I've read some of the negative reviews, and I'm thinking, "What the???" A different password emailed each time you call? And some of the other complaints just make no sense.

24/7 phone/chat/email support based in the US, the tech support people usually go above and beyond what they should have to for the amount they charge. When I call, a tech support person usually picks up in less than 30 seconds, if that. Uptime has been fabulous. I even offer to migrate my web development clients to Hostgator for free if they'll leave some of the other hosting companies who shall go unnamed (but who have commercials at the Super Bowl). I have several clients on Hostgator, so I probably call more than the average person, and in 4+ years, I can count on one hand the number of unacceptable tech calls I've had, and still have fingers left over. They are very patient.

For their shared hosting, they will do a decent amount of hand-holding, but if you know nothing about having a hosting account, you should learn. For $5-ish a month, you can't expect them to do everything (although they often will anyway).

I love HostGator and highly recommend them. I don't work for them, nor do any of my family members or friends.

Can't setup stored procedures on a MySQL database without an act of congress. Support is slow and often never accomplish what you contacted them about. Making changes to account is not easy, especially changing your username (impossible).

Pricing has not gone down in 10 years of being with the company. I'm switching everything over now to a new provider.

We have over 65 domains with Host Gator and the only issue we had was that every time you talk to support you get an email of a new password, so it has been very difficult to keep up with that. But as of now we had viruses attack our emails and in the process of cleaning up we asked for Gator Host's help to work with our IT support. It has been so difficult getting their help on a more complex issue. I have been working with them for a week and still not resolved. I would NOT recommend ANYONE including my worst enemy to Host Gator!!!! Every time you call customer service you get a different answer, no past notes are really left for the next person that you speak to, I talked to 5 different people in one day and had 5 different answers. Don't make the same mistake! I have had HostGator for almost 1 year now and their servers are always down. They do not have any type of guarantee (all their site will tell you they have a guaranteed for 99% uptime, not true), the way they get around it is by saying that when their servers are down for "regular maintenance" that it does not count towards their 99% uptime guarantee! Well, anytime they have issues, they call it "maintenance" or better known as "emergency maintenance"! What a joke, might server has been down for more than 32 hours and running, so this is the last straw with them, I could handle being down a couple of hours every month, but its now almost two days with no service! What was once a decent host provider has failed miserably. The worst part, they have no expectations of when they will be up and running. If you have a wordpress site, DO NOT use hostgator. After reading all the reviews -there were a couple of negative ones which impressed me- I decided to try Hostgator basically due to their 45 days moneyback guarantee, since I was not very sure of what I was going to find. After a month or so, my experience couldn´t have been better. I got a dedicated server which is really fast. They managed the migration process of a 50gb website. Their support is outstanding, both on and offline. They even helped me with source code issues (I doubt any other support in the world would do that) and made adjustments to php.ini and .htacess files when necessary (and explained why they did it). The ticket system answers are amazing: they read what you write, and return detailed explanations of what is wrong, and how to fix it. I´ve never worked neither with WHN nor with Cpanel before, but with their help I could deal with both softwares rather peacefully. This is definitely a five star service; I have no complains at all and I strongly recommend Hostgator.

I bought an account six days ago, and was asked for a scan of my credit card and ID. While on vacation in Thailand, I ran around and got the scans made, I proved that the card belonged to me. Next, I was asked to get a screenshot of my internet banking interface, to prove once again that the credit card belonged to me. Now, they are asking why my current IP address is not the same as my billing address (people travel duhhh!). If I knew this would happen, I would never have bothered with Hostgator! A complete nightmare! A week has passed with all this nonsense and I still haven't gotten access to my account, even though I have already paid for it.

Very disappointed with this host. I'm not sure what is happening, but obviously firewall problems have corrupted all of the sites. Been using HostGator for years... until a string of recent problems left me with no other choice but to move all of my servers to a major competitor in the Linux VPS space. I battled with tech support to investigate the issues, which one technician flat out told me he would not do. I fought it, and it ended up being a firewall configuration error on their side. Hostgator India seems to be decent hosting company from Outside. The customer service is second to none and there has been literally very very little downtime...did I mention 'very little downtime'? That's exactly the case.

I'm on a shared server and was once informed via e-mail that my site was using up alot of resources and I needed to resolve the issues or have my site temporarily suspended...this is the case when you're on a shared server so I have absolutely no problem with it...Hostgator's support actually gave me tips on how the streamline my site for less resource use and it works great...not only do I use less resources but my site runs faster and more efficiently.

My site has been on other hosts prior to Hostgator, but none compare or even come close.

I have been a loyal Hostgator user for over 7 years. I recently added a new account for a client who needed to use email via the email clients that Hostgator offers. After I set this up, I found out that Hostgator refused to enable the built in spell check feature in the Roundcube and Squirrel Mail email clients the provide. When I asked them to enable it, they told me they would not do so and the only want I could have a spell check feature on my account was to upgrade to a dedicated server at a minimum cost of $33.00 a month.

What a joke. Other hosting providers offer spell check in the email clients they support, but Hostgator does not. Because of this I can NOT recommend using Hostgator.

I signed up for HostGator a week ago and had my files transferred from WordPress.com. It was a major decision to go self hosting and I wanted to make sure that I am choosing the best company. The Migrating guys were wonderful and transferred all the files and to make sure that everything was functioning properly. I couldn`t have done this without them! Since Aug. 28th the clowns at Hostgator have had me on the phone more than 30 hours, disconnected me 8 times, had literally dozens of people trying to as they might laughingly use the term "help". I was building a website for my local Political Party, so the expense wasn't mine. That being said, the pricing seemed fair.

Support was great.

I think they need a way to determine the skill level of each customer when a tech is entering into a conversation. One time, they did over complicate a question I had. The Tech seemed new, but still, if I could have rated my experience level for them, then they would not have had to spend time asking question that were unrelated to my query while wasting my time. I don't remember the specifics, but I needed an answer the the exact question I asked. We finally got there in the conversation, but the Tech kind of took me around the block a few times before we got there.

I did not have to spend much time or any time really, in talking to them for setting up my website. I did have problems being able to figure out where the links were so I could transfer a URL to the account. The service was great and response time was good when I needed help, but it just seemed like it was difficult too follow their labeling of categories to get to where I needed to go to do what I wanted to do.

Yes, I would recommend HostGator along with others. Over all the customer service was good, the pricing seems good, no problem with up times in the month I used their services.

Bcoz its frigging awesome. There is nothing i have to complain about. I have found no faults in their offering ever. I have two years with Hostgator now, and my opinion about them smoothed a little. I mean, they're not the very best anymore, I feel this and I'm thinking to switch to other hosts as soon as my contract expires with them.

First, you have to read carefully the TOS. They're not responsible for anything, and they can close your account without warning. You will also find that the "unlimited" bandwidth, domains, GB, blah blah blah, are in fact very limited, I guess to 20 Gb, and everything will be fine with the backups. They do them weekly, but you have to pay additionally if something happens. No problems here, you just pay, they're not responsible if something happens, either.

I think they have the call-center in India somewhere, so if something more important happens, it's impossible to get a Texas admin online if the timeline is wrong, they prefer emails (of course), and the response rate is between 12 to 36 hrs.

Otherwise, carefully optimizing cache and backups, cron jobs and such, they're good. They offer the possibility to pay monthly, which was good when I opened my first account with them.

I was a new account. I purchased the shared Windows hosting. I had several problems, and never got my site running with the tools they provided (Plesk).

1. I was unable to restore a backup of my SQL Server database. I tried two database backup files from two different SQL Server databases. Neither could be restored with their tool. It told me that the format of the database was not correct.
2. I read on their support site that I could use MS SQL Server Management Console to access my database. But it didn't describe what IP Address to use or what username to use. So I guessed, and I guessed correctly. However, I needed to get my development machine's IP Address white-listed in order to access the database remotely. Their white-list page didn't work. I contacted support and after 15 minutes, they were able to white-list my IP Address for me. I couldn't use their tool. Then I had to wait 1 hour before I could access the database, because the white-listed IP Address had to propagate through their system. Eventually, I was able to create the database objects and import data.
3. I uploaded my site via FTP. I had to change the database connection string in order to access the MSSQL DB. However, the site did not update. The same logic works on two other sites that run my application. It looked like the live site was running on some other server, because their index.aspx page always appeared, even after I deleted that page with FTP. So uploading your site via FTP will not update your site. And none of their tools would allow me to test my site. Those tools reported 404 errors and SSL certificate errors. I contacted support again. After 30 minutes, they admitted that their tools were buggy and didn't work most of the time.

So I cancelled my account.

Signed for web host package. Everything was working. Suddenly, my account is frozen and I receive an email from HostGator's billing department asking for a copy of my Drivers License to confirm my identity for security reasons. I signed up with Hostgator on Aug. 28th because I heard they rocked. It is now Sept. 15th and I still am having problems. I have spent over 9 hours online over this time with one rude, inept, and brainless inchworm they call their staff. I have over 42 emails. I have spoken to more the 14 people including "managers". It cracks me up how HostGator.com brags about their support. Everyone seems to think that they offer good support, but I'm finding otherwise. Their hold times are consistently 20 minutes or longer, their systems and admin panels are confusing, they don't have any obvious links on their site which point to common features such as signing in to your account, transferring websites or files, cancelling subscriptions, etc.

Because I am a web designer, I tried signing up for their hosting reseller plan. The admin panel for managing websites was soooo confusing! I called the support line, and after waiting on hold for 20 minutes, the support tech directed me to a 100 page online manual and then left me hanging.

Their chat hold times are consistently longer than their phone hold times, and the response time for each question that I ask is about 5 minutes. It's obvious that the person is juggling 50 customers at a time.

When I do finally get a hold of one of their agents, I feel like I have to twist their arm for a thorough, concise, and detailed answer.

I hate to say it, but GoDaddy support is WAY BETTER! However, GoDaddy servers are slow. I guess the bottom line is, pick your poison.

Some Points:
1. Their support is awesome. Their Live chat itself handles so many issues. Only if it could not resolve then You may need to Open a support ticket.
2. Their service is exemplary. The CPanel is the upgraded version and any changes in software versions is handled almost immediately.
3. The pricing is really good. Such quality support could not be expected at this price range. But they are giving it.
4. More than anything they have servers located in India which is my major user-base. So the site gets loaded faster than usual for my users.

Just want to say that I cancelled my account to Hostgator because I no longer use my website but when I sent in the cancellation form I never replied to the email asking me to reply to it for verification (they tried to contact me several times for verification but I missed the attempts). I ended up getting billed the month after it for never completely canceling my account, so I went on live chat and told them what had happened and they immediately removed the charges from my account and cancelled my account for me. Do not use hostgator to host a professional website. You will have serious issues with their 404 error pages.

The default 404 error page is loaded with hostgator advertisements, it makes you look terribly un-professional.

Hostgator claims to let you change this by modifying the .htaccess file so that you can have a custom 404 error page. THIS BARELY WORKS.

Frequently you will find that:
- the .htaccess file doesn't correctly apply to all sub-folders
- It randomly deletes itself and reverts to the default one

Their support is USELESS on this issue. They just direct you to the "Custom 404 error page" tutorial, and they claim that its working fine even when it isn't.

Its very angering that they don't have an un-bloated 404 error page. Hostgator makes money off of your 404 error pages, which probably explains why their support is so useless on the issue, and why they won't make the default 404 error page unbranded.

DO NOT GO WITH HOSTGATOR UNTIL THEY UNBRAND THEIR 404 ERROR PAGES.

I wish I had known that they do not understand their own server environment. They simply turned off our website because they said it was "draining services" - and copied and pasted something into a ticket in cpanel - no notification via email that there was a problem. They said it had to do with too many plugins in wordpress probably - which was ridiculous based on the fact I run over 65 websites similarly without a problem. When I looked at what they had copied and pasted it looked like a denial of service attack. I suspected a hack.

The 1st level tech person was clueless - she could maybe have the skills to check some one out at a cash register, but not analyze a technical problem. She insisted "it wasn't true" that there was a hack and refused to escalate to a sys admin.

I hired an outside person to do a quick review and they found the hack - fixed it -all in 15 minutes. Now hours later Host Gator has still not returned the site to normal.

Unprofessional to say the least. Maybe you have had luck with them - but it only takes one big problem like this to discover what their capabilities really are.

PS - I harden my sites and doing weekly QAs to ensure WordPress is secure, but they still manage to find a way in sometimes. Upon calling HG they said, oh we could have scanned it for you too - but how could they when their front-line tech was too clueless to escalate it?

I have multiple accounts at Host Gator and as much as a pain it is, I will have to move everything after this experience. It's usually a sign of things to come.

I'd been looking for a host service that could provide one feature: python language support. Since I was trying to manage a small python project, I thought it could be done by any hosting server advertising such feature. Having read positive reviews about hostgator hosting service made me take the decision to choose them. But never a single one script written by me ran in their server. I tried to contact their technical support, took a long time to reach any available support and, when I got, they never solved the issue. I explained what was happening clearly and repeatedly, I followed all their instructions to the letter like changing files permissions, changing the file editor (used simple plain notepad and even their on-line text editor) in order to have my small project going. It took me days and dozens of e-mails, but none of my python scripts ever ran, whatever they asked me or even whatever I did in order to have it working. So I'd like to leave this warning to any ptyhon coder, since I had never found any warning like this before I picked thier service: Python never worked for me in their host. If you're considering coding in python, choose other host. And review both the ones that worked fine and the ones that never worked at all, to help newbies and other programmers in general to avoid wasting time and money.

I have been with Hostgator for almost 6 months now and hey never cease to amaze me. The support is out of this world, i have used both the live chat and the support ticket process and both times my problems were solved immediately. When ever I had an issue, their support staff would fix it right then and there, and then they would explain to me what happened.

It is just one of those days - you couldn't access your websites because some hackers attacked your sites and injected some virus through security hole in wordpress.
( I forgot to update one of my wp blog and also the password is way too short.)

I asked for help from Hostgator -the security officer answered straight back.

They explained this type of compromise is typical of a malware or virus installation on a PC or workstation that has been used to login to the account. The malicious software scans for login credentials or logs keyboard activity and reports it back so as to exploit your account(s). It is necessary that the user do a scan of the infected system and remove any malicious software.

They immediately scanned my sites and removed all the virus updated all those out of date application, sent me instructions how to send request to google for a review,
after back and forth 10 + emails, my websites came out clean and got re listed with google within the next day!

I decided to give HostGator a try after hearing good reviews about them. Unfortunately I was not very impressed.

They have a cool customized cPanel, where you can add stuff like Cloudflare and sign up for SEO services. You can even create a basic website.

I did not experience any downtime on my website and loading was fast.

However, I had problems with their 24/ support. I found that none of the support technicians knew anything about web hosting.
-I asked for the technician to add an additional domain to my account (to host 2 websites) and all he did was add a subdomain to my existing site
-On another occasion, I asked the support staff to help me with .htaccess. The person didn't even know what .htaccess was!

Our move over to Hostgator came as a surprise to many including us after having spent so long down in the bowels of free web hosting we were reasonably happy making the best of what was on offer though our long suffering hosts were slighty less than thrilled as we took our site to edge of the acceptable useage policy and bandwidth routinely.

On the several occasions that I have used their technical support for advanced configuration and for assistance with moving the blogs to their servers initially they have been extremely courteous and helpful every time. They actually moved my blogs from another hosting company and everything worked immediately other than a minor issue with a bridge plugin between Wordpress and Gallery 2 which required administrator rights on both to correct.

I recently signed up for HostGator for my new fansite which I was switching over from a free host, since it was growing a bit big for free hosting.

The first thing I loved was that there are many coupons for 1 cent for the first month. I got to try my first month for just a cent. I signed up for the hatchling plan, only because I needed to host 2 domains.

First of all, I paid with Paypal (which is a plus in my opinion). However, after I signed up, I got the message that my account was suspended. I contacted support and they told me that they needed me to verify my account by calling a number with the phone number associated with my account. I went ahead and did that, and then contacted support again to see if they could unsuspend me. However, they then said they had no records of my calling in and verifying my account, so I argued with them and told them I called them and even had records on my phone. However, then one of their staff called me and got it solved with me so I could use my account.

One of the best things about HostGator is their uptime. Pages load very fast for me, and I never saw my site down once.

I have been with Host Gator for more than three years now. When I switched to them I was upset of my previous hosts downtime and constant excuses of why my site was down. So far it has been great with Host Gator, the major plus of their company is definitely their support, they help you with anything.

They may look cheap when you want to buy, but in reality it's nothing out of the ordinary, it's a good priced hosting provider, but be careful.

Overall I am very happy with the service, there are only some minor issues, but I will not change host now :)

Some time ago I started hosting my website on HostGator and my 6 month plan has now ended.

I've only seen my website offline a few times (three at the most) and those were always short periods. The website runs well most of the time but unfortunately it gets slow sometimes.

I have required support a few times and I always got my problem fixed, although their support was a bit slow.

About the features, they've got unlimited disk space and bandwidth for all the plans. They have CPanel and I never had any feature I required missing.

The price is pretty decent compared to other hosts.

I run a very small business and wanted to set up a small online store to expand. I was pretty dismayed to find that the majority of hosting options aimed at e-commerce were either horribly expensive or very light on appropriate features.

After a week of swearing at my PC I came across HostGator who offer cheap hosting plans with lots and lots of features, space and bandwidth and for anyone setting up shop they also offer very affordable business hosting which includes free private IP address and SSL. Got pretty excited about that I can tell you.

I've been with them for about a month now and I haven't tried all the features but I can tell you that the customer service is about the best I've encountered - I'm not in the U.S. so I use the live chat rather than the phone number. I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes to get through and more often than not it's less than a minute and they have answered every question, niggle and problem I've had.

There are plenty of add-ons, the control panel is a breeze and I have got way more disk space and bandwidth than my little business is likely to need. Very happy so far.

Couple of niggles - you seem to need a different username and password for every feature. 1 to access your web disk, 1 to access the ticket system, 1 to access your billing and account area, 1 to access their site builder software. It gets very confusing.
It's also quite difficult finding your way around their site. It's not immediately obvious where to log in to access your account information and so on.

One last thing - the prices advertised on their main page are not necessarily the best prices they offer. I would recommend having a hunt around the review sites for HostGator discount codes.

I can highly recommend HostGator for anyone wanting to set up an e-commerce store.

HG is one of the most reliable and affordable solutions on the global market.
Their features are suitable for both professionals and newbies. The Cpanel administration is running very effectively, almost any updates/requests/changes are applying immediately. I feel hostgator is great. I got hosting a while back from them and never regret it. I did have some issues with some scripts. These quickly got resolved via live chat. Only one issue had to get escalated to an admin via ticket, Again, Quickly resolved. The value is fantastic for "unlimited hosting". I feel they have done a little bit of false advertising with the fact if you change the cpanel theme you see its space cap is 99999GB. Nobody will ever use this but it is still not unlimited space, However i do not care about this! The support is fantastic and so is the staff that provide it. I know 4 staff out of work and am in close contact with them just from that chat, In the first week. They handled problems very well and if chat cannot resolve it, They escalate an issue to an admin via ticket. I would recommend hostgator to others by a mile. THe servers are great speed too most of the day. This hosting is only suitable for small websites however. If you have a site too big, You may use the resource limit, Such as RAM and Cpu. I heard if you do this they suspend your account until you move to a VPS or Dedicated server, But this may be false. I wish i knew hostgator a long time ago.

Hostgator is a perfect host for any type of websites ranging from newly budding websites to e-commerce websites. I have always wanted better access to my server and see what is happening in my server . None of the webhosts that i had tried earlier had given access to my server to such an extend that hostgator provided me eventhough I am on a shared hosting plan.

Through hostgator cpanel I can find out how much memory my scripts and sites are using , how much CPU speed am i consuming and all those details about the server.

Hostagtor support is very good. But not the best. Their phone support is superb. But they take a lot of time to reply to email tickets and also the live shat support is for no more than getting basic details and ideas about hostgator.

Even though hostgator takes a little late to reply my emails (usually 4-5 hours which is much more compared to my previous host which used to reply me within 2 hours) they solve my problem in first reply.

Anyone who have basic knowledge about Cpanel can easily access and manage their websites in hosstgator's host. No need of extra technical knowledge. Hostgator also provides easy sitebuilder so we don't even need coding knowledge to make manage simple websites in hostgator.

The shared hosting plan offered by hostgator are also superb. Especially the business plan , which I am using. They also provides free SSL , Dedicated IP and even a toll free phone number with Business shared plan which is a plus point for me to refer peoples to them.

I host a lot of sites with HostGator. Currently, I'm using their baby croc account (added static IP to it - before they had the business account) with several sites on it (will be breaking off to a reseller account shortly once done with my site). What amazes me with HostGator is their support. They are very good about notifying you of downtime and doing it off hours (alerts will appear in cpanel - must be using the default theme though).

Every time I talk to support on an issue, if there is a downtime they tell me about it immediately rather than working on my symptoms for an hour only to have someone tell them there is an issue. They also know what I'm talking about. If I have a specific question on DNS, they can answer it. If I want features added or removed, they can help me.

Speaking of, the ability to add SSH and come in to a shell (even if it's a virtual shell) is one of the best things about HostGator... that and web dav. Both of which I contacted support for assistance with.

I have a few clients hosting email off my hosting package. Spam filtering could be better but to get 'unlimited' free email accounts is pretty great (works well for a few accounts, wouldn't recommend it for a lot of accounts).

I think HostGator could work on their automated scripts. My only recommendation would be not to trust automated backups or installs and manage such things on your own (I did have one case where I selected a backup options in cpanel and the backup was incomplete). I make my own backups as a CYA and it was a non-issue for me.

Otherwise, HostGator has everything you could want. The price is very low (beaten by a few but none that provide the same value). Downtime is rare. Turnaround quick. Definitely room for improvement but more in extra non-essential features and still miles ahead of the rest.

Hostgator has never given me problems... and If I've had one, its always been super easy to get help. The support is fantastic. You can submit a ticket through a web-mail based form and it will most likely be responded to within the same hour. I've also had live chats with them and they really know what they're talking about, they aren't untrained professionals off in India or anything. I have a baby plan, and I host about 10 domains on it now. HostGator, what better can you ask for out of a company? I am currently on their shared hosting plan and oh boy if you did not know better it is just like a VPS (only you cannot restart it of course). On the Business Plan HostGator partnered with VoIP; so if your small business needs hosting VoIP gives you a free toll free number which is fantastic!

I wish I knew that HostGator does not allow incoming ports but they were kind enough to open the outbound ports. That is one of the main features that are a problem as well as there domain transfer/renewal/purchase of $15 which is a bit pricey.

Although $15 is a bit a lot; no doubt has that $15 gone to a great support system. You have the ability to contact HostGator via Live Support, a Support Ticket, or via their Toll Free Number. HostGator, although having a wait time longer than HostMonster; exceeds in their support system. They are definitely a step above HostMonster with the server technology but has yet to reach the step of HostMonster and their support system. Nevertheless, HostGator always pulls through with a 15 MINUTE OR LESS usually pickup time on their Toll Free Number line.

I have yet to report one downtime on my server longer than 10 minutes. They are always willing to win your side with Script, PHP, and MYSQL support; I had my forum programming go whack and the HostGator support team of course fixed it.

For customers, it is the normal website host that does not involve a large Linux enviornment but rather knowledge of cPanel is easier. For those clients that aren't quite as good, HostGator provides a Site Maker which is fantastic for new clients into the website hosting world.

HostGator is overall aimed toward the Business World of course they have personal plans such as their $4.95 a month plan, to their big corporate dedicated servers. The majority of their features however benefit small to medium sized businesses. Even though they are looking for business clients with their Dedicated IP, SSH, VoIP Partnership, and such of that nature; I would recommend HostGator to a friend for one and one sole reason. You won't get as much bang for your buck, support this fast, and server this fantastic unless you are with HostGator.

If you dread to read this review; basically HostGator gets a 4.5/5. 5 for Features (From SSH to Dedicated IP), 5 for Uptime (Have experienced one downtime of ten minutes), 5 for Value (They give you a 45 day money back guarantee if you do not like it!), and 4 for support (May not be as fast support as HostMonster but they do just as good). The process for hosting your domain name with HostGator is made easy with their simple steps signup and will have your site up and running within minutes. Before i became a customer i should have learned how to follow simple instructions. Because that's all it takes to build a site.
The Tech Support team are there 24/7, and in most cases respond to a Chat Request within a minute. While at times Support must have thought they were chatting with a 5 year old, my questions have always been dealt with in helpful, curtious manner.
Generally problems are solved very quickly with a Tech stepping you through the process and then supplying a link or location of the information they have just given. The chat transcript is then sent via email so that it can be referenced if needed again.
To use HostGator you need absolutely no technical expertise.
The process for building a site with PLESK SITE BUILDER is extremely simple, I have proven that!

Before trying HostGator, I was very much curious to know whether their hosting would suit my requirements. For nearly around 6-8 months, I reviewed their TOS and chatted with sales representative.

I was still not able to decide and then I came across a phrase that people can also get in touch with Brent Oxley. I decided to give a chance and Brent replied to my query. He said that just to get business from me, he would not give me false information.

So finally I thought to give them a try. Instead of shared hosting, I went ahead with Dedicated Servers. Not to mention, Brent offered me a free one month and the support staff was so co-operative that they extended support at each and every occasion.

Now I am a big fan of HostGator, especially Brent. I would live to meet Brent personally whenever I have a change to visit abroad.

With HostGator I've got the best hosting so far. I never had a single downtime and the speed is extremely fast. I only needed support 1 time so far, and I got it directly. Their affiliate systems is also one of the best one available and it made me earn the amount so I could buy hosting for 6 years in advance already!

My husband and I were hosted by Hostgator.com a few years ago, no more than 2 years ago really. We picked Hostgator to be hosted by because as, back then, frequent DP posters we seen plenty of Hostgator reviews which were 90% positive. So, based on the good reviews, we decided to give them a try.

We were pretty happy at first but the support staff was not very good and always seemed to never be able to answer any of our questions through the live chat. They always directed us to submit a ticket for even the smallest things which of course we were pretty frustrated with because we usually needed an answer then and not wait an hour (sometimes more) to receive a response...For that matter, a correct or even a response that made sense. In the end, we decided to move on but we shared our experience with our honest opinions about the support.

While sharing our experience with others, my husband was contacted by the owner of Hostgator and after some discussion about our experience, he offered free hosting for 6 months. We were astonished! We never seen an owner of a company that cared enough to not only listen but to do something to correct the problem. Even though we are not hosted by Hostgator.com today, we know that the owner of that company should be respected as he really cares about the clients that the company hosts which is exactly how we are as a hosting company today. Brent Oxley has made quite the influence on how we run our company and we would greatly like to thank him for the experience in which we had :)

I host a membership site which has several hundred members. With more than 300 members constantly asking me for a list of recommended hosting companies, my response is always the same -- Host Gator -- bar none!

I have hosted hundreds of sites on thousands of servers and I have to say, HG is by far the best, most well mannered, most customer oriented team I have even seen. Their customer support is absolutely outstanding. Their features go well above and beyond that of any other hosting company I have ever used and their speed is phenomenal. I had an issue just a few weeks ago - my email was not working properly and their support staff spent almost 6 days working on it for me. Even when I had decided to give up, [they] were determined to figure out the problem (which happened to be on MY end - oops)...

No matter what issue I have ever addressed with Host Gator, they have always assisted me with a smile (you can just tell, you know). I have been hosting with them (via various sites) and I have NEVER experienced any downtime. This is NOT to say that they do not have any downtime, I am just explaining that I, myself, have not had any downtime on any of my sites - not even for a second (knock on wood).

Using one of the greatest control panels on the net gives it's customers a familiar environment, but, they have also included a slew of additional features - for example, all hosting customers received access to one of the largest collections of very HIGH quality website templates. We're not talking templates which are seen all over the internet either, we are talking Template Monster quality templates (in fact, if I didn't know any better, I would say they ARE from TM) but all members have free access to the templates...

The speed of their servers are great as well... They are not the fastest I have ever experienced, however, they certainly rank up their at the top.

I honestly could not say enough about Host Gator. Whenever I need a hosting account, or whenever someone asks me who I would recommend, Host Gator is usually the only company I recommend - and for good reason.

Honestly, I knew everything about Host Gator before signing up. the only thing was that it would cost me $10 to change my main domain, if I hadk nown that then I would've used a different name since mine expired in a couple months. The support is magnificent. There is a 24/7 support line aswell as a 24/7 support online chat. I always get answers to my questions and the representatives are more than willing to help. Customers only need to know how to setup the website, although there are free website templates and builders in your cPanel which is fantastic. All problems (only 1) was resolved within hours. It was actually my fault, I was used to my old host who allowed basicly everything that wasn't adult content. I setup a few proxies and was shutdown in a matter of hours. They reasoned with me and all I had to do was get rid of the proxies then all my websites were back up. This hosting service is good for anyone who is doing regular websites and wants to host a lot of different domains. It is not suitable for people for (A) want a type of file/video host, need specific server requirements (like FFMPEG hosting) or want adult/warez/proxy hosting. I recommend HostGator to all of my friend. I've actually made $250 from the affiliate program which has been paid to me. I just paid my 12th month which is pretty impressive, I usually back out on things like these in 2 months and change so Host Gator really has that certain charm that I need. Because of the affiliate program my hosting has been free, I've paid $120 approximately for the year, and made $130 profit from the affiliate program after the $120 hosting deduction. They are definately the #1 host and new features are being added every month; for example the free Adwords voucher. They also have a $0.01 coupon to try out the hosting, pretty good eh?

Well, I consider that experience with many hosting companies will help me to describe how comfortable I am since I use hostgator. What do I wish to know before become a customer of hostgator? Nothing, there are absolutely no hidden fees, all features are shown and receieved as mentioned when you signup, etc. They handle the support queries in an acceptable timeline, usually 4 up to 12 hours in my case. As I saw, they can handle both professionals and beginers, so they seem to have a complete crew. Hostgator has solutions and packages and I am sure they're suitable for anyone. I already recommend hostgator to my friends, and even to any people I know and is searching for a hosting solution!

HostGator Introduction

HostGator offer a broad range of services, but they’re undoubtedly best known for their well-priced shared hosting plans. They offer three shared hosting services - Hatchling, Baby and Business - and each one steps up the service options and support provision. In addition, HostGator offer reseller plans, VPS hosting and dedicated servers, as well as an affiliate programme.

HostGator is a private company. The current CEO Brent Oxley formed the company while he was at university in 2002. Now, HostGator host more than 8 million domains for 400,000 customers in over 200 countries. Originally based in Florida, HostGator’s rapid growth lead them to a move to Texas in 2007. They have a base in Houston and an office in Austin, plus an Indian arm which you can find at http://hostgator.in. Additionally, HostGator have a third office in Brazil which manages http://www.hostgator.com.br. They currently employ 200 people but are expecting to double this in the next couple of years.

HostGator Hosting Plans

Across the board, all of HostGator’s servers on shared, reseller and VPS plans run Linux (CentOS is specified on the Linux plans). When it comes to dedicated servers, users can choose Linux or Windows; the Windows servers run Windows Server 2008 R2 at the time of writing this review.

Shared hosting covers three plans. The most basic plan, Hatchling, is a one-domain package with no add-on domains and no anonymous FTP, but it’d be fine for hosting a blog. For more domains, users need to upgrade to Baby or Business. For anonymous FTP, only the Business package will do. Additionally, dedicated IPs are not available on the Hatchling plan. On Baby, they’re chargeable, and on Business, they’re free. Business also includes private SSL (the others are shared) and a toll-free number for you to use as you please. This is only really useful for US customers, or those marketing primarily to customers in the US, although the number can be extended to serve Canada at additional cost.

Shared hosting is HostGator’s speciality, but they do also offer a few other options.

Reseller hosting is split into five plans depending on the disk space, bandwidth and domains that are required. Other than that, the provision on each plan is more or less the same.

VPS hosting is split into nine plans. Again, you’ll need to fine-tune your requirements using the interactive price chart to calculate the applicable monthly fee.

Dedicated servers are priced according to the resources you need. The pricing is the same for both Windows hosting and Linux hosting, but the software obviously differs depending on the OS.

If you want to run Java, you’ll need a VPS or dedicated plan, but Python is installed on all servers.

HostGator don’t currently offer cloud hosting.

HostGator Uptime/Downtime

HostGator rent their data centre space from The Planet, using four of their facilities in Texas. Power back-ups, fire detection and constant monitoring from on-site staff keep their 12,000 servers safe and secure. They use 10 different fibre providers, including hardware from Time Warner and AT&T. They currently offer a 99.9% uptime guarantee (although they don’t publish any stats) and offer an RSS feed for service status updates.

All accounts (except dedicated servers) are backed up on a weekly basis. If you need to restore a backup, HostGator charge $15, unless you supply the backup file yourself, in which case it’s free.

HostGator host more than 8 million domains, and they’re pretty open about their staff, resources and services. They have a host of high-profile partners too: Cisco, AT&T, Dell are just a few of the recognisable names on the list. Notably, they don’t allow overselling, so the capacity you’re given is the capacity you’ll actually get. The exception is on a VPS or dedicated server where you’re free to oversell at your own risk.

HostGator Support

HostGator’s support options are pretty comprehensive for a low-cost shared hosting provider. You can access 24/7 live chat support, a FAQ, email support or phone support (within the US, it’s free to call their phone number). It’s not clear where their support staff are based.

Support and billing is provided via a portal where customers can login to upgrade their account, access user forums, check out the knowledge base and watch helpful video tutorials on some of the most common configuration questions they’ll face. This account login is separate from the Cpanel login. In addition, transfer requests are handled smoothly via a quick online form.

HostGator in the News

In June 2012, a hacking group hit HostGator with a DDOS attack which was named #TheHolocaust. UGNazi later used similar tactics to take down other hosts and payment processing companies. HostGator brought their servers back online within four hours

HostGator Control Panel

All of HostGator’s Linux plans come with Cpanel 11 as standard, and users are given a variety of themes to choose from. Cpanel provides access to all the features you’ll need, including webmail, one-click backups and DNS settings for Google Apps.

Reseller accounts are also provisioned with Cpanel and WHM. Both Cpanel and WHM are optional on VPS and HostGator’s Linux dedicated server hosting plans. On a Windows dedicated server, Plesk 11.x is included in the price.

On VPS plans, HostGator also provide Virtuozzo, an administration package for the server itself.

All customers get access to a separate billing area to organise payments and download invoices.

HostGator Extras

The Business shared plan on HostGator includes a free toll-free number for US callers. Optionally, this can be extended to Canadian customers for an additional charge per call. Should you cancel your hosting plan, you lose the number, unless you contact HostGator first to take it to a paid service. You’ll also need to receive at least one call per month to keep the line active.

Most packages come with SiteBuilder, SiteStudio, Fantastico (a range of php scripts), osCommerce, WordPress, Joomla, one-click installs and a host of capable stats packages. On dedicated servers, you can allocate individual SiteBuilder accounts and templates to your clients.

HostGator also offer $100 Adwords credit on all shared hosting plans, and reseller accounts receive a free upgrade to an eNom domain reseller account. This requires manual set-up, but it’s a quick and painless process that takes a couple of minutes.

HostGator Money Back Guarantee / Cancellation Policy

You can cancel your shared, reseller or VPS hosting plan within the 45-days and receive a full refund. Dedicated servers are not eligible. Costs incurred, such as admin and installation fees or domain name purchases, are non-refundable.

Cancellation requests need to be sent via a special online form. The account will be cancelled within 48 hours. If you want to claim a refund, you need to reply to the cancellation email and request it - it’s not automatic. Refunds are sent via credit card or PayPal.

HostGator Summary

HostGator proudly claim to be eco-friendly. They offset their emissions, and they also use 130% wind power via Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). Considering the company claim that more than 1% of the planet’s internet traffic flows to and from HostGator’s 12,000 servers, that’s definitely a big achievement. While HostGator’s low pricing is similar to other shared hosting providers, their plans are extremely comprehensive and scalable, making it easy to purchase a small shared plan and upgrade to a higher-spec shared hosting, VPS or dedicated server package over time if you need to.

HostGator also place great emphasis on user help, and it’s rare to find such a large hosting company that readily offer efficient live chat, email and phone support for free. The added extras, such as the eNom account and affiliate programme, make them an ideal choice for a new business that’s looking to grow or white-label. All in all, they offer a rounded feature set for a good price with a whole host of extra features to keep loyal customers happy.
