Lycos

Our Profile

Update: Lycos no longer offers web hosting services. In 1994, Lycos Inc. was founded by Bob Davis, who led it on to become one of the most visited online destinations in the world, with a popular search engine, entertainment and news content. Lycos Europe was launched in 1997 as a joint venture between Lycos Inc and the German group Bertelsmann AG.

Company and Services
Lycos Europe has web hosting companies in six European countries. Taken as a whole, Lycos Europe is one of the biggest suppliers of web hosting in Europe. Lycos UK Ltd has its headquarters in London, with its parent company (Lycos Europe) located in the Netherlands. Lycos Europe also has offices in France, Spain, Denmark, Italy Germany and the US. And, it operates in more than 14 countries around the world. It hosts an impressive 6 million websites. However, financial concerns have cast a shadow of Lycos Europe in 2008. It announced losses of $15.5 million in the half year to June 2008 following a collapse in revenue. This is down from a $75.8 million profits in 2007.

As you may expect from such a big conglomerate, Lycos offers a vast choice of hosting solutions, for both big and small users alike. There are shared server options, dedicated server options and virtual dedicated server options, all of which run on the Linux Platform.

The Lycos “One Click site!” tool for easy to install software applications is included with all of its shared web hosting packages. There are also special features to help e-commerce businesses get started. Multiple language options are also available. More exacting requirements may be met by the Company’s virtual dedicated servers, which are designed to give the security, control and flexibility of a dedicated server at a reduced cost. Lycos guarantees 99.9% uptime and customer support via the live text chat link on it's support website.

Lycos is one of the oldest, most well-known names in online services and has hit the headlines for reasons good and bad over the years. One of the most notorious incidents took place in 2004 when Lycos Europe launched its ‘Make Love not Spam’ campaign with the introduction of a screensaver designed to overload websites which advertise via spam. This was not well received by the spammers and the company was subject to retaliatory attacks.

Server Location
Lycos Europe keeps its data centers in Stockholm, Sweden.
