Is ProperHost the host for you?
By Claire Broadley
Claire has reviewed more than 100 hosting companies in the last ten years.
ProperHost is a Norwegian company that has been trading for more than 10 years. It focuses exclusively on managed hosting for Magento users, and its infrastructure and servers are optimized to deliver the best possible ecommerce performance.
Customers that join ProperHost benefit from 24/7 support, free migration and a PCI compliant environment. PCI compliance is essential if you plan to process credit card payments online.
ProperHost offers three tiers of Magento hosting, which closely resemble the plans you'll see on general purpose hosting websites. There are a few key differences; ProperHost uses LiteSpeed rather than Apache, and Percona rather than MySQL.
Its shared Magento hosting plans are inexpensive, offering an ideal entry point for startups and new stores. At the Mini level, customers can use one domain per store. Scale up to Basic, and you can use 5 domains per store.
Fully managed, dedicated server plans come in 4 pre-configured flavors, each with a dedicated IP, cPanel/WHM and RAID on SSDs. The service includes huge bandwidth allowances and proactive monitoring from the ProperHost team.
Cloud Magento hosting falls between the shared and dedicated plans, in terms of price and capacity. There are 4 pre-configured plans to choose from, all provisioned using KVM, plus the scalability and stability that you'd expect from cloud hosting.
Across all plans, you can choose whether you want your site to be hosted in the UK or USA, and you can use CloudFlare CDN free of charge. All clients receive a free one year license got Magento Full Page Cache when they join.
ProperHost is refreshingly upfront about its infrastructure and datacenters. It uses one facility in Texas, and another in the south of England.
The Texas datacenter is a Tier 3+ facility located within the former Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas building. ProperHost claims that it's the most secure facility in the region. It offers protected power, with four separate substations providing reliable service. Biometric security restricts physical access to the site.
The datacenter in Maindenhead, to the east of the city of London, is purpose-built and manned 24/7. It has dual power feeds, backed up by a fleet of diesel generators. It is also ISO 9001 and ISO 270001 certified.
ProperHost provides support from its base in Kristiansand, Norway, and promises an answer to all enquiries within 24 hours, 7 days a week. You can open a support ticket directly from the website, or use Live Chat for instant answers.
Within its SLA, ProperHost promises 99.9% server and power uptime guarantees. If you experience downtime that exceeds the SLA guarantee, you'll receive a credit of between 10% and 100% of your monthly plan fee.
ProperHost accepts payment via credit card and PayPal. You can choose a default payment method per invoice, or top up your account and use your credit to pay. Note that any credit added to an account can't be withdrawn.
ProperHost has considered every aspect of reliable Magento hosting, and has developed comprehensive plans with many of the advanced features that serious ecommerce customers will be looking for. Management is also a welcome addition that removes much of the technical headaches from Magento deployment. If you need a highly specialized host, ProperHost more than proves its credentials.
