ThePlanet is a great web hosting company. My server has never crashed or had long periods of downtime. ThePlanet Doesn't have all of the features other web hosting companies have (free billing software, free web hosting books, etc) but that doesn't matter a lot. They always have the latest CPanel and WHM installed and they are partnering with SoftLayer technologies right now to start providing those great features. I would highly recommend ThePlanet to a friend.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS - ThePlanet seems like a nice, inexpensive option, but once there is a problem it will cost you much more than you save! The people at ThePlanet have no sense of urgency when there is a problem on their end and they DO NOT CARE AT ALL about your site or servers.
A little backstory on my experience with them:
I have been with them for about a year, and things have mostly been good, then one Sunday the firewall they gave me blew up so my site went down and I couldn't ping my servers and it took them an entire day to figure out the problem and remove the firewall. The fact that it took over 24 hours to diagnose and remove the firewall should have told me to run, but unfortunately I stayed with them.
Now, a few months later, I currently have 4 servers with them (switching to another host as soon as I can!), and my main server has been having all kinds of connectivity issues for 3 days now! Ever since most of their severs went down on 11/2/10 one of my servers has not been working...yet their twitter feed says everything is great and all servers are working (very frustrating to see them say that!). You would think they could fix their connection in 3 days!
My connection to the server is spotty at best, and even after admitting that it is their fault they do not put much effort into fixing it. Worst of all though, they are not apologetic and have no sense of urgency in fixing it and getting my site back online! They act as though my server and site being down is not a big deal. Because it isn't a constant issue and it just loses connectivity every few hours, they constantly tell me everything is OK and close my tickets out and try to say the issue is on my end (even though I have proven 3 different times that my 3 other servers run fine and the issue is definitely with the connection to this one server - FINALLY they have admitted it is an issue on their side).
I have 4 open tickets on the same issue and have called 12 times asking for a manager each time and ONCE did I get a manager, and never has a manager called me back (I requested a call back each time). No one has apologized for the issue or done anything to fix it. After many hours on the phone (I refused to hang up when they said someone would call me back), I convinced them to do a chassis swap to move my hard drives. They refused to move me to a better server (seems like they owe me at least that for 3 days of downtime on my site...), and after doing the swap they didn't setup an internal IP on the server, so again my site was down as it couldn't connect to my other servers. Then when looking at the new server it has been revealed that there are major issues with the BIOS of the new server they've given me.
Yet with all of this they are doing nothing to fix it, have no urgency, and are not apologetic AT ALL. Do yourself a favor, spend a little more money now to save you countless hours of your life, tons of headache, loss revenue from your site being down, paying your developers to look into ThePlanet's issues, paying your employees to deal with mad customers about your site being down, etc.
AGAIN, AVOID AT ALL COSTS, IT WILL ABSOLUTELY COST YOU MORE MONEY IN THE LONG RUN THAN ANY OTHER HOSTING PROVIDER.
The Planet hosting are definitely the best dedicated hosting providers I've used so far. From the signup process to the setup and now the support the experience has been completely seamless.
The Planet also give you cheap hosting! With a coupon I managed to get a pretty good deal on the web hosting. The standout feature has to be the support though, within a few minutes of opening a ticket you get quality support response, and each subsequent reply is quick and painless so hosting problems get solved fast.
The admin system on the backend to manage your dedicated server, tickets, domains etc is mature and stable. Hence The Planet hosting are good for any kind of customer - from the early stage right up to advanced, although you still need to be able to manage a server yourself.
