Getting to Know Bronwynne

After completing her journalism degree, Bronwynne got her start in the newsroom, working for South Africa's leading print and broadcast community - and mainstream - media houses.

Later, she spent six years in public relations before becoming a freelance writer and editor.

She now writes and edits blog posts, and develops digital content for clients - mainly at the top of the funnel - in the technology sector.

Our Interview With Bronwynne

How'd you get into technical writing?

I've always been deeply interested in the way tech has impacted my life and my career. Working in the newsroom during the rise of social media was fascinating, and scary; everything changed and suddenly people could turn to Twitter for their breaking news, instead of the daily newspaper.

My honors degree focused on how technology impacted public discourse, and I became slightly obsessed with the data behind our social media likes and enjoyed exploring these patterns using tools like NodeXL. When I started my freelance career, indulging this interest in technology was natural. Now I get to write and learn about cool new topics every day.

Are you working on any cool projects?

I've seen amazing examples of digital storytelling; interactive elements on the page that let the reader immerse themselves in the story. This is what I want to create, so my main focus right now is upping my JavaScript.

What are your favorite books?

Thinking Fast, Thinking Slow by Daniel Kahneman. This book confirmed my suspicions - we're all hopelessly irrational!

World War Z by Max Brooks. Best zombie text. Ever. (No, it's nothing like the movie. There's nary a scarf-draped Brad Pitt traipsing around the world.)

On Writing Well by William Zinsser. If you do any kind of writing, it's worth working through Zinsser's book. I go back to it regularly for help and inspiration.

Where are you in the world?

Cape Town, South Africa.

When did you first use the internet?

Probably in Grade 8 - all the way back in 1998. I thought it was awesome. But it would be much later when I discovered it's true usefulness, and that it could be an asset or hindrance - depending on how we use it.

When you aren't sitting in front of a computer, what are you doing?

Reading, running after my two small kids, and prepping for the Zombie Apocalypse. (It could happen!)

What do you like to watch on TV?

I don't watch TV but I regularly binge on fiction and true crime podcasts. Here's my current playlist:

Who do you use for hosting?

SiteGround and HostGator. SiteGround is probably my favorite; their customer support is outstanding.

How did you learn web development?

I learned HTML from online platforms and completing a web development course via Udemy.

What do you love about freelance writing?

You're always learning awesome things and meeting awesome people.
