The hosting business never sleeps. And neither can you! So below I discuss recent hosting news - as well as special deals - that you should be aware of.

SiteGround Upgrades Hosting Features

I've long been a fan of SiteGround. But that doesn't mean that I haven't had some complaints - especially the expensive backup option on their entry-level plan. That (and more) changed recently as part of the company's 15-year anniversary.

SiteGround was always doing automatic daily backups for its customers. But if you had their StartUp plan, you had to pay a hefty fee if you wanted it restored. Now restores are free on all plans.

Additionally, their GrowBig plan provides a free staging server for WordPress and Joomla - in addition to on-demand backups.

And their top-level plan, GoGeek (as well as all their Cloud and Dedicated plans), now includes priority support where customers are directed to SiteGround's "most experienced support agents."

The GrowBig plan now offers on-demand backups and WordPress/Joomla staging

These upgrades go well beyond what I had been hoping for. In fact, a lot of website owners who normally would have chosen the top-tier GoGeek plan will find that the GrowBig fits them fine - at a notable cost savings.

Social Warfare Vulnerability

Social Warfare is a popular WordPress plugin that puts social media share buttons on your pages and posts. But version 3.5.2 of the plugin had a vulnerability that allowed hackers to inject malicious JavaScript into the share button links.

Luckily, the problem was found quickly by a security expert and was almost as quickly fixed. But it is a reminder of just how important it is to keep your software up-to-date.

As I write this, Social Warfare has been updated twice since the vulnerability was found. But an unmanaged WordPress install could still have the old version allowing hackers to do untold harm.

Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com, has started the launch of a software suite for modern, distributed workforces called Happy Tools. They are based on internal tools that Automattic has built over the years to manage their own team that is located in 68 countries.
