Frequently Asked Questions
Black Friday/Small Business Saturday/Cyber Monday can be a confusing time. Sales come and go. Lots of claims are made. It’s enough to make your head spin.
Below, we answer some of the most common questions.
What is Black Friday?
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving when retailers traditionally offer big sales. In fact, retailers tried to rename it “Big Friday” but the term never took off. Online, Black Friday has become more of a period — most often running from Black Friday through Cyber Monday.
When is Black Friday this year?
Since Thanksgiving is late this year, so are all the sales days associated with it. In fact, Cyber Monday is in December!
- Black Friday: Nov 29th, 2019
- Small Business Saturday: Nov 30th, 2019
- Cyber Monday: Dec 2nd, 2019
Why is the day after Thanksgiving called Black Friday?
Traditionally, the term “Black Friday” was used to describe something bad that happened on a Friday — like the stock market crash of 1929 that started the Great Depression. The history of the shopping day is unclear but it looks as though police named the day “Black Friday” because of the problems it caused due to large crowds and high traffic. And somehow, it stuck.
How can a host offer such big discounts?
We don’t have any inside information about the financial workings of different hosting companies. However, it’s reasonable to assume that when a host offers a very low price, they are doing so as a loss-leader. That means they are losing money on the product as a way to attract customers. Once in the door, you may buy a higher-cost item or renew later at a higher price.
Are these Black Friday deals real?
The short answer: yes.
The long answer: yes, but many hosts offer special deals throughout the year. For example, GreenGeeks’ Pro shared hosting plan has a regular price of $14.95/mo. Normally, they offer this plan for $5.95/mo as a special sign-up rate. For Black Friday, they’ve lowered the price to $3.95. That’s an extra savings of $72.00 on a 3-year contract. Is that real? We think so!
How do I get the best Black Friday deals?
Don’t get blinded by percent discounts. While a 90% discount is always impressive, the ultimate number is the price you will pay. Find the hosts that offer the performance, support, and features you want. Then compare prices.
How long a contract should I choose?
Most of the deals we discuss assume that you are going to sign up for 3-years of hosting. Generally, the longer you host for, the better the deal. And if you get a great Black Friday deal, it’s best to lock it in for as long as possible.
Why isn’t [host] listed?
There are thousands of web hosting companies. We only feature the ones that we consider reliable. Other than that, if we haven’t listed a deal, it probably means that it isn’t live yet. Check back!
Why have you listed “Normal WhoIsHostingThis Deals”?
These are hosts that offer good deals normally. They may have Black Friday deals that just haven’t gone live yet. But regardless of any later deals, they are worth checking out because their prices are comparable to many other hosts’ Black Friday deals.
What are flash sales?
Some hosting companies offer flash sales. These are periods were extra savings are applied for a limited time — one or two hours. We don’t normally cover flash sales here because they come and go so quickly. But we will generally tell you which hosts offer them.
What is Cyber Monday?
Cyber Monday is the Monday after Thanksgiving. Started in 2005, it was meant to encourage people to shop online. These days that’s hardly necessary and Cyber Monday has become an extension of Black Friday — usually its end. But you will often find special deals on Cyber Monday.
What is Small Business Saturday?
Small Business Saturday is the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Started in 2010, it was a reaction to Cyber Monday — a day people were encouraged to shop at the small businesses near them. Today, it is a good day to get B2B deals. But it’s still a good reminder to leave your computer and support your local economy!
