The Endurance International Group is a multinational publically traded hosting company (NASDAQ: EIGI), and the company behind many beloved hosting brands. Their focus is to help small and medium sized businesses succeed online.
In addition to their hosting services, they’re the muscle behind a variety of small and medium sized business apps and projects, including Business On Tapp and AppMachine. They’re headquartered in Burlington, MA with offices all over the US as well as in India and Brazil, Endurance employs 2,500 people. At the time of writing, Endurance is led by CEO Hari Ravichandran.
Endurance was started in 1997 as BizLand.com. Even back then, their target audience was small businesses looking for digital solutions, and this quickly garnered some much-needed venture capital to get off the ground. However, when the dot-com bubble burst in 2000, so too did BizLand, emerging with just 14 employees.
The Endurance group began to reimagine themselves by developing a suite of back-end tools and acquiring customers via brand acquisition. By 2008, they’d caught the eye of the tech-focused private equity firm Accel-KKR and were purchased for an undisclosed amount. Accel-KKR continued to grow by acquisition, bringing a number of hosting companies into the fold.
In 2011, the company was bought by Warburg Pincus and GS Capital Partners for somewhere around a billion dollars. Finally, in Q4 2013, Endurance International announced their IPO at $12.00 per share.
Since then, they’ve continued to expand, adding well-known brands like Arvixe and Webzai to their list, as well as acquiring a 40% stake in the Dutch app company AppMachine and forming a strategic partnership with the email marketing software company Constant Contact. They also began expanding internationally in a big way, adding Directi to their large subsidiary companies to their brand roster.

Products and services
With possibly hundreds of brands under their belts (there’s no complete list) Endurance has something for everything. With various brands, they offer shared hosting at various price points, from rock bottom discount through to a premium, light-loaded server shared hosting product. They also have a range of reseller accounts, not to mention VPS, cloud, and dedicated solutions.
Because they grow by acquisition, their hardware specs can be anything from a custom built dedicated server to an out-of-the- box Dell commercial server. Generally, their servers run on Intel processors, but this is by no means a hard and fast rule.
On the software side of things, the Endurance family is almost exclusively an open source company. Since 2013, they’ve run their own script library call Mojo Marketplace (it’s like Softaculous or Fantastico) to bring open source software to non-developers, and the vast majority of their brands are LAMP hosting companies, usually using CentOS.
Plus, Endurance is an active participant in in the open source community, regularly sponsoring and participating in open source language conferences.
Aside from every possible manifestation of web hosting, Endurance has a range of brands that offer other tech solutions for small and medium sized businesses. This includes:

- A unique blogging platform (Typepad)
- Design services (Webzai)
There is no one single, all-inclusive list of brands that Endurance owns, with their own site listing only a select few, the BBB listing a few more, and press releases and other primary sources showing more brands again.
Needless to say, they’re currently hosting at least 60 brands all over the world, with acquisitions (like Directi) often having their own subsidiaries, further expanding the Endurance family. To date, Endurance’s brands collectively have 4.5 million subscribers, putting them somewhere in the top 10 biggest shared hosting companies globally.
Corporate culture and values
Endurance is committed to customer service, reliability, and investor integrity and transparency. Moreover, they work hard to offset their carbon footprint by purchasing wind energy credits, both for themselves and through their subsidiaries (many of whom are green hosts).
Finally, the Endurance International Group is dedicated to small businesses. That’s been their core focus since 1997, and they continue that pattern even now, most recently with their strategic partnership with Constant Contact.
