Getting the Right Host: Is HostGator It?

What is the right web host for you? In this article, we take a deep dive into HostGator to help you determine if you should choose HostGator.

HostGator Review

Looking for affordable plans and easy set-up? HostGator's commitment to providing support for new users makes them one of the best options for small-scale web hosting. Specializing in hosting for individuals and small business, the company cuts out unnecessary additions.

Many of HostGator's competitors offer plans packed with features, forcing them to charge higher prices. HostGator appears much more affordable in comparison. Despite this, they still provide some powerful hosting infrastructure.

The company offers a wide variety of hosting options. These range from user-friendly shared and cloud hosting to VPS plans for more advanced users. However, their cheap prices will also mean that customers will be faced with some limits.

Background

HostGator is a leading hosting provider with headquarters in Houston and Austin, Texas. They also have international offices to spread their reach globally.

The company was founded back in 2002. Now, more than a decade later, they host websites for over 400,000 customers. I don't know about you, but I'd say that kind of experience is evident of the company's reliability.

Basic Web Hosting Suited for Smaller Businesses

HostGator's web hosting plans are meant to serve low-maintenance websites. For example, individuals running their own blog or e-commerce store.

The Hatchling Plan

HostGator Features

  • 24/7 technical support
  • 45-day money-back guarantee
  • WordPress integration
  • Unlimited traffic, emails
  • 99.9% uptime guarantee

Their cheapest shared hosting plan also has the most adorable name, the Hatchling. The Hatchling plan is perfectly suited to people who are brand new to web hosting. Cheaper than starter plans from both GoDaddy and Squarespace, HostGator should be considered by anyone on a budget.

The Hatchling plan allows people to host one single domain and unlimited subdomains. With one-click installs of a variety of applications, you can easily get started on WordPress. If you're like me and shudder in the face of following complex instructions to install applications, then one-click installs will be your best friend.

Also, enjoy unlimited FTP accounts so your developer can transfer files to manage your website from their own computer. This is an essential feature if you'll be having someone else develop your website.

Even with the Hatchling plan you will be allotted unmetered disk space and bandwidth. Before you think this is too good to be true, I'll tell you right now that it is. Unmetered resources can be deceiving. Though this means HostGator doesn't place strict limits on your bandwidth and disk space, you'll still be required to keep your usage within the range that they consider acceptable.

But here's something cool: you'll get $100 in AdWords and $100 in Bing Ads credit with any plan so you can start marketing your brand-new website right away.

HostGator: Why Buy Hosting From Them?

  • Over 950,000 websites being hosted worldwide.
  • WhoIsHostingThis users rate HostGator as 3.3 out of 5 – Good.

The Business Plan

HostGator's Business plan has even more excellent features to offer. With an included private SSL certificate and dedicated IP address, you will be ready to start accepting payments on an e-commerce store immediately.

This is a rare inclusion for hosting companies, as many only give you shared SSL certificates. These can still trigger security warnings to your store customers. Private SSL certificates often need to be purchased separately. An affordable business plan that includes these is a rare and wonderful find.

Cloud Hosting for Superior Performance

One of the best reasons to consider HostGator is their cheap cloud hosting options. For each of their basic web hosting plans, you can pay a small amount more for cloud hosting. This will give you twice the speed and four times the resources over a shared plan.

Cloud hosting reaches this kind of speed due to:

  • Low-density servers
  • Premium hardware
  • Multiple caching layers
  • Data-mirroring that distributes 3 copies of your data across multiple devices.

It's great for people on shared web hosting who find they're reaching usage limits. You can easily upgrade to cloud hosting at any time from the control panel.

Overall, your website is managed efficiently so dynamic content is processed super-fast. With unmetered resources, your websites can be scalable to respond to visitor spikes. You can scale up your resources from your dashboard with one click. This will give your websites the power they need without experiencing downtime or requiring reboots.

HostGator vs Popular WordPress Option, Bluehost

Features Hostgator Bluehost
SSL Certificates Free Purchased separately
Features Many included Fewer features
SiteLock CDN Included Include

HostGator added managed WordPress hosting to their plans in 2015. These plans also run on the company's cloud architecture, giving users lightning-fast speeds. These WordPress plans are cheaper than those found at both WP Engine and Media Temple. In addition, they come with unlimited email accounts, something that is hard to find with cheap plans from other hosting companies.

Cheap WordPress Plans

HostGator's most expensive WordPress plan is still half the price of Bluehost's cheapest managed WordPress plan. It also provides more than double the storage space.

However, HostGator's WordPress plans do not include SSL certificates. These can be purchased separately, but Bluehost gives them to you for free with all plans. They also provide a free domain name while HostGator requires you to purchase one separately.

Domain Transfers

But here's where Bluehost falls short: they do not include free domain transfers. Instead, they charge a hefty fee to migrate your websites. This makes HostGator stand out as an exceptional option for people with existing websites because they transfer domains for free.

Both Bluehost and HostGator include SiteLock CDN with their WordPress plans. What does this mean? That website content is stored globally, leading to fast load speeds for people all over the planet. SiteLock also protects websites from hackers, malware, and viruses.

HostGator appears to be the cheaper host simply because they cut out additional features from their plans. This makes them a great budget option for people who just need the basics.

Intuitive Dashboard

HostGator guarantees you a 99.9% uptime. From your dashboard, you will be able to monitor your own uptime, so you know that the company is delivering what they promise. If they fail to meet this guarantee, they will give you one month of hosting credit to your account.

The ease of using a hosting provider's control panel is an important thing to consider, especially because many people using HostGator will be starting a website for the first time.

HostGator's Customized cPanel

HostGator uses the industry-standard cPanel control panel for all of its plans. As cPanel can be confusing if you've never used it before, HostGator has customized it to make it more user-friendly.

From the control panel, you can easily add packages to your plan based on what you want to do. For example, you can select that you need to support more traffic, integrate a blog, or are trying to sell stuff. Based on your selections, HostGator recommends a package to add to your plan.

Add a package screenshot
Add a package screenshot

HostGator's Optional SiteBuilder

You can also purchase and use their website builder from the control panel. The builder uses drag and drop functionality, includes a full image library, and allows for complete customization.

Site builders can be useful but often result in messy code. It's often easier for developers to build you a brand new site than customize one you have built on a drag and drop platform. Just keep this in mind before you use it. Try out WordPress to build your website first. It's free.

Other cPanel Features

You'll be able to perform many other actions through the control panel:

  • Create and manage an email account
  • View website traffic by integrating Google Analytics
  • Add domains and subdomains
  • View your SSL certificate or purchase one
  • Get Google Apps to streamline your business
  • Set up HostGator email marketing.

Email Marketing

HostGator's email marketing is free to use for your first 3 months to under 500 contacts. This feature includes tools for building your email list. Add contact information from your Facebook page or existing website. Segment email lists to target specific audience groups. Create email messages with their mobile-friendly templates.

Never underestimate the power of email marketing. It has some of the highest ROIs (Return On Investments) for marketing techniques. And when you're trying it for free, you can't lose.

VPS Plans Offer Higher Performance and Flexibility

A virtual private server (VPS) gives users full control over their hosting environment. It's meant for people who want root access to the server and need to install their own software or scripts, but VPSes can be challenging to maintain.

HostGator offers fully-managed VPS servers which include access to their customized cPanel. On the other hand, their semi-managed servers do not include the control panel. You will need advanced technical knowledge to run websites smoothly on these plans.

Fully Scalable Hosting

HostGator's VPS hosting will provide you with a scalable hosting environment. Your virtual server will be fully allocated to your own site. Forget about sharing resources with other people. Instead, scale your own resources with one click. Your hosting will be able to handle more complex websites and much higher numbers of visitors.

Due to the server's virtual nature, HostGator can offer them at cheaper prices than dedicated servers would cost you.

Don't just assume that VPSes will always lead to higher performance. HostGator's lower-level VPS plans will not outperform the company's shared hosting plans. But they will give you more flexibility in your hosting. For better performance, I advise you to opt for their higher-level VPS plans.

Typical Reseller Hosting Options

Reseller hosting is one way to earn extra money with your web design business. Advertising that you host websites can be a major selling point for you.

You could even outsource web development and host these websites for your clients. This is a great way to make money doing very little work.

Host unlimited domains even on HostGator's cheapest plan. With any reseller plan, you get unlimited email accounts, so you can offer them to all your clients. Be aware that your disk space and bandwidth is limited. For more resources, you will have to upgrade to more expensive plans.

WHMCS Client Management

HostGator's reseller plans include free WHMCS client management and billing software. This makes it easy to manage who you're hosting websites for and bill them accordingly.

From the WHM control panel, resellers can limit packages and specify resource amounts for each client. You will also be able to brand your clients' control panel with your own logo. Additionally, you can brand HostGator's video tutorials as your own to help your clients get started.

Excellent Live Support and Helpful Resources

Speaking of tutorials, this is a good time to mention what kind of support you can expect from HostGator.

I would have liked to see a better-organized support page on HostGator for finding articles and resources. Their knowledgebase is a little difficult to navigate. People may find it hard to find the answers they're looking for.

You can contact customer support directly from your control panel. In fact, your support tickets are the first thing you see when you log in.

Support ticket history screenshot
Support ticket history screenshot

As you sift through the options for narrowing your particular issue, you will be presented with links to helpful articles. Since the HostGator knowledgebase is not organized intuitively, this is a helpful way to find articles in it. If these fail to answer your question, you can continue on to contact live chat support.

Getting support screenshot
Getting support screenshot

Always Available Support

With a team ready to help you 24/7, you won't have to worry about your website problems for long.

If you prefer to talk to someone on the phone, as many do, you can get a hold of a support assistant via a toll-free number. People are available to answer calls at all hours. You can even send mail to one of their offices the US or Brazil if that's your style. However, this is the slowest possible way you can get support from them and I cannot recommend it.

Who Should Consider HostGator?

HostGator is best suited to host individual websites and small businesses. It will be great if you're starting a blog on WordPress or building a simple portfolio website. In fact, their cloud-based WordPress hosting makes them perfect for this.

On the other hand, bigger businesses will need to check out HostGator's VPS plans to get the resources they need to run websites smoothly. Just make sure you grab a HostGator coupon from our website before signing up.

Upon logging into my HostGator account, I'm presented with many options. Tabs in the control panel point me to my account settings, billing information, hosting specifics, and a support page. Notice that you will be presented with HostGator advertisements in the sidebar. This can bother some people, as I know it bothers me.

HostGator cPanel dashboard
HostGator cPanel dashboard

User Friendly cPanel

HostGator's customized control panel is more user-friendly than the default cPanel. You can see all of your options nicely organized in tabs. This makes it easy to find what you need.

The control panel also makes it extremely easy to get support. A knowledgebase search in the sidebar gives you quick access to articles. And a support tab at the top lets you reach live chat support with no problem.

Other Hosting Providers

If you're looking for more inclusive features with your plans, then you may want to check out Bluehost. They'll be a good option for people building e-commerce websites on WordPress because they give you a free SSL certificate.

If it's cheap, optimized WordPress hosting you like, look into InMotion Hosting. Their plans come with solid disk space limits. This is good for people who dislike the vagueness of unmetered resources.

For people who like cheap but want even cheaper than HostGator, 1&1 may interest you. Their cheapest plan gives you the bare minimum you need to run a website for next to nothing.

What does it mean when disk space and bandwidth is unmetered?

Unmetered or unlimited resources can be misleading as companies often still place some kind of restrictions on your usage of them. HostGator defines what they consider acceptable use in their terms of service.

Their unmetered disk space and bandwidth is really only enough to run personal websites and small businesses. They state that customers using more than 25% of system resources for more than 90 seconds will be asked to reduce their usage. HostGator may even terminate your access to services if you continue to violate this.

If you're just running smaller websites, you shouldn't worry about this. It will only be a problem to larger businesses who think that unmetered resources mean they have access to as much as they need.

Do HostGator's prices increase upon renewal of a contract?

Yes, this is a common thing for hosting companies to do.

HostGator offers their cheapest rates for people signing up for longer lengths of time. They give you their most affordable options when you sign up for 36 months. In fact, this is their advertised price.

People not willing to commit to longer than month-long terms will be faced with much higher prices. Once your term is over, you will be charged at these higher rates as well.

Which Company is Better for WordPress Hosting, Bluehost or HostGator?

Bluehost is an officially-recommended hosting provider by WordPress. They offer various managed WordPress plans. These all include SSL certificates, CDNs, and free domain names.

However, HostGator provides a longer term for their money-back guarantee as well as more storage space. Their WordPress plans are also cheaper and run on speedy cloud infrastructure.

Both companies provide easy WordPress set-up through one-click app installs. Although WordPress recommends Bluehost, HostGator may be a better option for people who want cheaper WordPress hosting.

Uptime and Response Time

The last 6 months of uptime an response time have bee measured via Pingdom.com. Note that this is measured on one test site only, but it should provide a good idea of how robust HostGator servers are.

  • Downtime: 9 minutes
  • Outages: 2
  • Uptime: 99.996%.

?

Final Thoughts

HostGator is a good option for those who want a cheap hosting option. Its best feature is the unmetered hosting, which is perfect for a smaller website. We all know that unmetered doesn't really mean "unmetered" when your website gets popular, but HostGator is more than adequate for a personal or small business website. The support is also excellent, even if their knowledgebase is a little difficult to navigate.

For larger businesses or those who run higher-traffic sites, there are better options for hosting like InMotion that have been mentioned earlier. HostGator is a good, solid, easy to work with host nonetheless. Its user-friendliness and good support makes it a good choice for smaller sites.

I switched to Host Gator after having issues with my old host. I chose Host Gator because one of my clients has all of his websites hosted there and since I am in charge of web site maintenance I've dealt with them one and one without any issues. During my first month, I had my website go down for two hours and didn't receive a reply from support until 4 days later, long after the issue resolved itself.

This is drastically different from the treatment I receive when contacting support on behalf of my client, though he is on a much larger plan than I am (16 websites compared to my single site). Aside from this small issue, I've been happy with the features they have. My old host gave me no control over which version of php I was running (and was also running a very old version of it that some of my wordpress plugins had a conflict with) and my website is running much faster now.

My old host couldn't handle the load of one Wordpress theme I used and Host Gator loaded it without any issues. The interface is very easy to get around and has all the popular features like one-click software installations, unlimited mail accounts, unlimited domain hosting and more. The price is great also.

As a web designer, I've worked with more hosts than I can name and believe me, they all have their quirks but host gator has been my favorite so far. I recommend using live chat for support issues as you'll get a quicker reply but otherwise definitely give this host a shot, especially since they allow you to pay month to month instead of annual so you can really test them out before you commit to an entire year.

I have experience of buying Hostgator's WordPress shared hosting plan for two years. I will deliberately call it as premier web hosting company of world due to following reason.
1: affordable price
2: extensive promotions and discounts
3: maximum features offered
4: very impressive uptime
5: 24/7 available support team
6: attractive cpanel
7: 1click script installing
8: fast server speed
when i bought web hosting i was advised to go for other premier web hosting companies but i bought plan from host gator due to impressive discount of 60% off on first month. I was offered this discount twice during my relation of customer with hostgator.

their customer support team reply to every query and also many times video support is available. My page speed was higher than many other sites, server up time was very satisfactory. It offered hosting on their Texas based server and i did not experienced any technical flaw and interruption in their servers.

I ended off my contract with host gator due to some business reasons but it was great journey of excellency which give me immense professional pleasure due to professional excellency achieved by this company. I would also like to mention that some times hostgator created problems due to cache running plugins of WordPress on my website but when support desk was contacted problem was resolved. It was my experience with hostgator which was enough good to encourage other people to go for hostgator webhosting

They need to spend less money on advertising and gaining new customers and more money taking care of the ones that they already have. I guarantee almost all of the raving reviews about hostgator are affiliates that get a commission for signing people up with them. I was with Knownhost but I felt it was too expensive so I decided to switch to hostgator since they had such really low prices.

Well those low prices come at a high cost. I was told the migration would take up to 72 hours. I requested the migration a week before my service with my current host was to end.

A week later they hasn't even Started the migration process yet. I had been checking and they kept saying 'within 24 hours'. I finally called and the guy told me they had no idea when the migration would be complete.

He refused to let me speak to a supervisor. Before I had a chance to contact my previous hosting company they cancelled my service and my websites (which represent thousands of hours of words and hundreds of dollars in advertising) were gone. Bottom line I almost lost my websites because of their incompetence. I don't recommend them to anyone except for someone that wants a cheap hosting company to host their cookie recipe blog.

The site is highly automated, but when you try and make contact with a live person, it's extremely difficult to do so. They make assumptions about your account which work in their favor -- e.g. assuming that you want to renew your domain name rather than asking if you do.

In several attempts extending over several months I was unable to reach anyone who could give me a meaningful answer to my queries, and at length I gave up and cancelled my subscription. Two years later I received a warning that they had issued an invoice for renewing the domain that I had never been able to get working on their hosting system.

I’ve been a paying customer for HostGator for the last 13 months until this year Feb. During that time, I’ve monitored their performance – avg. load time and uptime.

This review relies strongly on data, such as uptime, load time (speed) and customer support experience. HostGator encompasses a few redeeming qualities. However, they fall a touch short in a number of the foremost vital classes (like time period and speed).

Here’s however they fared in our tests.

1. Not quick Enough. slightly below Average…
HostGator followed up their lackluster time period show with equally mediocre page loading times.

Over the last eight months, their average was 991ms, that may be a bit (11.35%) slower than the common 890ms. That’s ain’t smart. particularly once speed is factored into Google’s organic search (SEO) ranking algorithmic program and has been established to harm sales with every delayed second.

Website load time is additional vital than ever: not solely will this can be why web site load time is one among our core metrics for ranking internet hosts we have a tendency to review. Again, not a good showing considering there square measure smaller internet hosts can less expertise delivering much better page loading times. Last eight month average load time
2017:

September average speed: one,011ms
October average speed: 998ms
November average speed: one,023ms
December average speed: 988ms
2018:

January average speed: one,002ms
February average speed: one,019ms
March average speed: 992ms
April average speed: 897ms
2.

additional Fee for ‘True’ Backups
HostGator advertises ‘instant backups’ one among their differentiating options on the web site. Trouble is, they’re bearing on manual ones that square measure offered by default in cPanel. Want machine-controlled backups to alter their life?

It’ll set you back an additional $15.95 annually. Here’s what they are saying regarding their ‘instant backups’ on their website:

“HostGator’s automatic backup service runs once every week on a random day, and every run overwrites any previous backups. only 1 week of backups square measure unbroken at a time.

The terms of our backup policy vary betting on the kind of hosting account.”

Shared servers square measure solely protected on accounts that square measure beneath twenty GB and one hundred,000 inodes, too. The company additionally claims that they supply backups as a courtesy, in order that they aren’t secured. They advocate that customers look for third-party backup services to shield their vital knowledge.

3.

customary evaluation ‘Tricks’
Web hosting evaluation appearance nice from afar, however removed from smart up shut. The first trick within the book is to solely provide their lowest rates for the longest terms – which means you’ll ought to sign in for a minimum of 3 years if you would like the good ‘promotion pricing’ mirrored on their web site. Otherwise, if you would like a real monthly choice or perhaps a twelve-month arrange, your monthly rate can skip 50-150%.

Speaking of ‘promotion pricing’, the second trick within the book is to supply this low publicised rate for your initial term solely. which means once your arrange will expire and it’s time to renew, the rates can jump duplicate to their ‘normal’ evaluation (which once more, might be over double the initial price). In that lightweight, HostGator doesn’t appear as if such a decent deal on balance.

I have chosen Hostgator after a lot of research and I am very happy with their service. The uptime is great and bandwidth is awesome. The support team is very helpful and ready to help you at whatever time you ping them.

My only disappointment is the price. There are some quality competitors having cheaper options. The moderately high cost is partly due to GST, a tax we pay in India. Overall I am with Hostgator and plan to continue with them for a long term.

HostGator has the Worst customer service and billing department. What's worse is that you can tell that they do not care that they suck at all. It's clear they do not value their customers.

In one week I have had two 2 billing issues with them. One of those issues being a 421$ unauthorized charge to my account. The person on the phone couldn't care less.

Most companies would offer you something because of all the trouble they caused. But no, not HostGator. Look, at other options before deciding to work with them.

While the features may be there the service will make you regret signing up. Believe me.

They provide almost good service which is far better than my previous hosting provider Xozz, But always remember one thing services are different if you buy hosting from HostGator(US) vs HostGator(India), So before buying if you need any clarification contact support team/sales teams according to your region. They also provide 24*7 live chat but in my first 10 days, they available instance but sometimes they or you have to wait more than 30 min to talk with customer service. But overall if you are beginner blogger, you can go with HostGator.

I like hostgator. I am new to making websites so I was looking for an easy solution for my business. He went to hostgator because he had an easy constructor for those who are not graphic designers like me.

I love the templates they gave me, easy and with ideas for my business. I would recommend this hosting service to anyone who wants something easy and economical. An effective way to have your business online. In just 15 minutes you can have a professional website and a good hosting service.

I used Hostgator for years, but I have to leave. I have an important new client site hosting on their Hatchling Cloud package and ALL emails from the website email aliases to Time-Warner Cable bounce because TWC says there are too many simultaneous connections or too many recipients. The issue is not my client, but other Hostgator customers who abuse the TWC spam policy.

I moved the site from a non-cloud package to a cloud plan because Hostgator told me that would solve the problem. It did not solve the problem and all Hostgator can say is there is nothing they can do. Well, there is something I can do and I'm doing it now. Hostgator is Great for hosting Joomla, but if email is important to you, stay away from this company.

I read lot of review about Hostgator here most of theme don't like hostgator service may be of various valid reasons. I want to share my own personal experience with hostgator and why I like them. I have been with hostgator since 2010 its more than 8 years now!

and still stick with them. If you are new in the filed of web development I highly recommend you to use hostgator due to below reasons.
1. First of all their hosting package are very very reasonable and low priced if you purchased their 3 year package.

Though discount don't apply if you renew afterwards..
2. They Give you latest PHP and ccpanle access which is very important for developing safe and secure websites.
3. They offer you free SSL if you purchase business plan
4.

If you want to talk about their support I would like to give them 8/10 most of the time they response your quiry within 24hrs. which is acceptable but I got my problems solved via live chat instantly.
5. Uptime this is most important factor why I am with hostgator, I really never ever see my website down from their end.
6.

Server monitoring - This is crucial if you are on shared hosting, to see if your sites are not consuming high cpu seconds. This give you idea if everything is fine with your site. Once I got alert from them, because all of sudden my site started consuming high cpu.

later on I found, my site was some sort of attack..I fixed and get everything running. So if you are looking for reliable then hostgator is good choice....

My site has been down for 48-hours with a ticket just sitting there open with zero updates. And, to even get a ticket submitted you have to go through all this hassle with a "live chat" which Barely even works (type something, click Send... again, again, again, nothing sends, then all of a sudden 10 things show up of the same thing you typed).

It's incredibly inefficient and frustrating. I feel Very unimportant to them, which means I need to look for a different host. I left BlueHost for them...

what on earth was I thinking? Bluehost is far superior in their service. Plus, it is Hard, really hard to work in HostGator's C-panel (if you can even find it).

They make it hard for you to be their client. And, you can't even install your own SSL - what the heck? I am SO unhappy with them. The moment I can leave, I'm outta there!

Friends I am one of the big fan of hostgator and being with them since 2005 now over 12 years, Still with them, but many things have changed since then and I believe hostgator is not able to compete with time, Yes due to their promotional offers and discounts they give to new users. Hostgator was able to have more customers than ever before but their standard of service has dropped a lot. I you ask me how.

I wants to explain in detail one by one..
1. Support :- If you talk about hostgator support this is in worst condition these days, their staff is not able to handle this much of work load, despite their customer base increasing, they really not taking this seriously. This is bad from my point of view.

You can easily see most of above reviews have same views on their support.
2. Features ;- Yep they have decent number of features but most of these features are readily available in most of the hosting companies, and nothing very special, instead other may have some extra feature for same price.
3. Uptime ;- Yes!

you can be tension free from this point of view, Their update is quite Super, I really never see my site being down even for 2 hours..You can rely on them at least for uptime quality.
4. Value:- I still don't want to give them 5 start on this, because today everyone wants to have their website have https, and this is available for free, they they will charge you ten buck if you don't purchase ssl from them. And this really hurts me.

I have over 50 websites and I don't want to waste 500 dollars for ssl certificates which this can be done for free. Just because of this I am looking some other hosting company.

If you are not a developer I would think twice about hosting with Hostgator. They only have a single user sign in for the CPanel and as I am unknowledgeable to handle technical issues etc I rely on a web developer. I wouldn't ordinarily mind giving the web developer log in details accept that in this case the email section of the Cpanel is accessible.

This means the entire developer team who is working on my website at the time has full access to the business private email accounts. I spent 2 sessions a hour each with Hostgator support asking if they couldn't just place additional password protection on the email section as there is confidential business info in some of these emails that I don't want just anyone to access. But I was told no and that is the way it is.

Single user and no password protection from Cpanel into Email. How difficult is it to place password protection from Cpanel into Email? I find this very backwards for what is supposed to be a technologically advanced company. Therefore as a non developer and the security issues posed I will certainly be looking into changing hosting servers as soon as possible.

Hostgator rocks. One of the most powerful web hosting company I've ever seen. With low price product but and high quality of service, you cannot regret the moment you use this product.

Partnership with the best company when it comes in networking area is one of the keys to success. You can trust them.

First of all I have been using hostgator hosting for more than year and a half,I had a lot of problems like configuring SSL with them, unexpected shutdown errors etc...but the most interesting part is their support. It's like I'm talking to a robot people which are giving me only computer generated answers... they should fix that as soon as possible if they want to attract more customers, since they are not really helpful in anything... only cloud hosting is amazing from them!

Support for hostgator has gone from awesome to terrible. Fees keep going up, plus they Charge for SSL. This company has obviously become too big and they do not care about my business anymore.

Lowprices attract newbies but it isn't worth it as the make up the profit from you later. I am forced to switch.

Hi from India. I've been using HostGator services for last 15 odd months. I'm happy with their services till now and I expect that they will maintain their standard in the future.

The reason why I choose their hosting was their cheap prices. I've heard from my nerdy friends that those companies which charge less also doesn't have good uptime which means their quality of services is not up to the mark but till now I haven't faced any such outage issue or downtime. So I would recommend HostGator services to anyone who is looking for hosting services at competitive prices.

I am using hostgator for almost 5 Years now and in these 5 years I really really don't have any problem with them, Yes, This is true if you are not technical you may face problem and when you asked for support they have min 24hr delay, But this delay is quite understandable as they have huge customers. But when you compared their support with uptime, smooth working of your website you can easily ignore this delay. Now let me talk about features they are offering and as you can see I give only 3 stars.

Though they have all features that you would probably find in almost all hosting packages, But these days if you website is not https enabled then google don't like it. and here comes the issue with hostgator they will charge extra $10 to allow you setup external certicate. But most of the hosting companies now offer ssl certifcates via cpanel.

We are still waiting if hostgator allow this or not in future. if you have only one website to host then no issues, but if you have 100's then you would like to use free SSL certificate and hostgator don't allow this. (This is only the reason Now I am looking someone else to host my websites)
As mush as update is concerned hostgator is just amazing, I never have any problem with them in this regard. and if you talk about pricing they are quite reasonable its only about $6 for unlimited domain hosting.

Worst customer service and billing department. After I cancelled my service they continue to charge my bank account. They do not care about customer service.

You are better off looking elsewhere for a web hosting service. Do not choose Hostgator. I am so disappointed.

Every time I contact support, I have a 2 hours online completely fruitless chat. Waste of time!

There is no doubt that hostgator is one of the most popular hosting company. But They are not able to sustain the quality as they should be, and for obvious reasons, number of clients they have compared to their staff. That's Why I give only 2 stars for their support which really sucks.

If you are not technical and you think you will need help then don't look at hostgator because their minimum response time has increased from 24 to 48hrs even 72hr some time. Also if you talk about their live support it may range from 30min to 90mins. Stay away if you need regular help or you are newbie.

2.

Features Normally I would have given them 4 stars but I cut done point because they don't allow you to use free ssl or https certificates from letsencript they want you to pay them $10 fees to set up Free SSL or buy their product That's really sucks. Most of good firms already supporting letsencript certificates.

3. Uptime is Good like other companies you know most of the companies have 99% uptime, So nothing special here.
4.

Value for money I gave 3 stars where, because they are expensive compared to few in market offering similar features or even better. So before you go and actually decide just make sure they are up to your expectations...But I am still with them :) as I am technical enough not need much help from them.

Hostgator is an average shared web hosting service. Their elegant cPanel is very easy to use. Overall aspects, features are average.

Hostgator's shared web hosting not value for money, but will be great if you can choose other plans. Pros:-
1. Free site migration, free initial setup.
2.

Cheap plans, 45-day money back guarantee.
3. Free 200$ advertising credits.
4. Average speeds and performance.

My site has been with Hostgator for over many many years. Like other reviewers they've been fantastic ............ and then they were sold and became a nightmare!!!

Firstly, getting help took way, has moved from under 1 minute to an average 15-20 minutes and the new support staff either are incapable of understanding simple, straightforward facts, or were incapable of thinking. Occasionally you get knowledgeable support but most seem to be following guidenotes and disappear off for minutes at a time and then come back with the next logical question. Their questions indicate they have no real concept of what they were doing, and looked as though they were following a script.

They used to be the stuff legends are made from and aren't any longer. It could be that it's teething problems, but after 14 days of inability to update my three hosted sites because their script kiddies can't find out why their own system is playing up - their admission that it's their system - not mine .......I'm off. Avoid them as you'd avoid sitting next to someone with a streaming cold.

I needed a great hosting company with a track record for some of my money sites. I had to make a choice between Hostgator and BlueHost. I decided upon Hostgator and subscribed for a Baby Shared Hosting Account.

I thought that with this big company I probably will not receive proper attention, but boy oh boy, was I wrong. I had an issue with a php script I wanted to run on the server that gave me some problems, I contacted them, and in less than an hour I was contacted and sorted out. They did not only instruct me how to go about, no, they actually took it upon themselves to do the full installation for me.

I’m very happy with their turnaround time and support. Other things that I like about them are this:

- Amazing up time
- Cheap price, yet quality hosting
- Fast server speed
- One click script installing
- Lots of other features

The Support team at Hostgator is really very cooperative & active 24/7. However, I have faced an issue with their billing system once I was charged twice for my recurring hosting amount. It took me a lot of time to reverse the charged amount.

Apart from this, the uptime is impressive, and my site never goes down. Server lacks some technical specifications such as PHP was not updated and I was unable to install some of the scripts. Overall I would rate the 9/10 to the HostGator.

These tools are like just play games. They provide best web hosting as I experienced till now. And the awesome part is about I gotted this all are absolutely free.

But before few year, due to less free time from studies I m not able to continue my website. Now my Studies completed and I want to continue my website.

My site has been with Hostgator for over ten years. At the start, they were fantastic and then they were sold. What was a trouble free service turned into a nightmare.

Firstly, getting help took way, way to long. It was also clear that the help staff were either not reading the tickets properly, or were incapable of understanding simple, straightforward facts, or were incapable of thinking. The staff continually asked questions when the answer was in the last exchange of emails.

Or, their questions showed they had no real concept of what they were doing, and looked as though they were following a script. The next issue was the up time. Outages became frequent and trying to contact support was a waste of time as it took an unacceptable time to contact them, and their response time became the stuff legends are made from!

Hostgator finally, at long last, recognised they had a support problem, so what do they do? Made things even more difficult for the customer to contact them. They dumped the ticket system.

I guess they figured out they could run a great business if "those pesky, damn customers" didn't contact them. I finally got the message and decided to move to a different hosting company (after trying them out first.) It took about 36 hours for another company to release a domain name to my new host. Getting a name released from these guys is a Herculean effort.

On the 29 January, the first problem encountered was trying to get the EPP release code. The instructions on their website were followed, but the system refused to reveal the EPP code, despite the destructions stating the process would reveal the code. After more wasted time in a chat secession there were two outcomes.

The first was the help person stated the domain transfer would take about three business days, and the second was that the EPP key was emailed to me. After the paperwork was lodged with Hostgator to release my main domain, I received an email stating it had been approved and that "Normally the transfer process will take 5-7 days. The transfer will be completed automatically....."

Essentially, they keep the domain "host-age" as a punishment for leaving.

Billing was emailed asking for an earlier release, but in true Hostagegator form, they didn't bother to respond. The seven days have now expired and the release has not taken place. Avoid this mob as you would a plague.

Hostgator has "fair" support. They typically have chat service that works, but it doesn't always. Today I was bumped off & had to sit through another wait before being helped.

Their answers are sometimes pretty vague. For example, was trying to transfer a domain away from them. You get the help docs on everything up to the point where they have to approve the transfer.

It's there that you have no control. There is a "wait period" that you don't get with any other provider that I know of. Don't purchase your domains at Hostgator. They're an "ok" host for sites, but they have their outages, slow servers, and do not have the free SSL certificates that other hosts are now offering.

I was really happy with Hostgator. I was using the hatchling hosting plan. Then moved to a dedicated not because of lack of space, CPU, RAM resources or whatsoever.

I was just hoping to get these traffic spikes every business owner expects. After this didn't happen (because of my fault, of course) I decided to turn back to Hostgator and I bought a business shared hosting plan. And then the problems appeared.

I am talking about a website with 100GB monthly bandwidth, 12GB of storage used and 220 000 inodes. After three days I received a warning that I am abusing the CPU big time and my account was suspended. From now on, its more than 48 hours my website is down and nobody does anything about it!!!!

You can understand that such downtime is a breakdown for any kind of business. 48 hours and the live chat support keeps telling me... well, we can't do a thing... wait for the email support to answer your tickets.

What A Wait! More than 48 hours my websites are Down! Simply awful, this is the Baddest experience that I have with a hosting company! Never ever use Hostgator!

I am a Hostgator for about six years but by now I had enough. The old guys say they used to be great and I don't doubt it. They were great when I first became a customer.

Than things started to go wrong. They compulsory move customers to an old data center with no warning. Then this data center had two major (24-48 hours downtime) outages in the space of two years.

My VPS server is now slow and unreliable. Support is technically good but Very slow. I am talking about 24 to 72 hours to answer a TT.

This is just surreal. Sometimes going online and have a chat with the first level tech support will help having your TT escalated... sometimes not. So I don't recommend these fellows mostly due to the Very slow support, downtime, unreliability.

Been building websites since 1995 and during that time used quite a few hosts. When you get a bad one, it can ruin your life or your business quite quickly. That said, Hostgator used to be my favorite.

I stayed with them for many years, but I'm leaving now. Ever since they were acquired tech support and quality has steadily declined and has gotten so bad that it takes hours and even days to get help even in urgent situations like slow load speeds of a minute per page because the site is overloaded or no email. I'm leaving and taking all my clients with me.

Sorry to see such a great company get so bad. I used to be a raving fan.

I have been using HostGator web hosting since 2007. From 2007 to 2013 I'd give them 5-stars! Now, 2014, I give them 1-star.

After Endurance International Group (EIG) acquired HostGator in 2013, my sites were moved to the Provo UT data center. In August my site went down for 2+ hours due to a network switches failure. Sure, stuff happens.

Once is no big deal. But unfortunately for me it continues and my site has been down several times since then. This is not acceptable.

I have not had any issues with HostGator at all. My websites are up all the time. Never have I tried to do anything and they weren't up.

I don't have to deal with customer support because their is nothing to bug them about. I really like having cPanel, adding domains is very quick and easy. By far the most reliable and fastest response time for my server-side software.

The only thing I would complain about is that the price went up almost $30/year after my first year, but quite honestly you get what you pay for and I do not mind paying for this service. I would recommend them, I have been though quite a few hosts.

I retired and no longer want the service. Since retiring (July 2016) I don't have access to the email and physical mailing address that was on file with HG. Hostgator auto-billed me in Dec 2017 and is making me jump through so many hoops to have the charge removed!

I've had to contact my credit card company for assistance. It's been 2 months of providing documentation, numerous phone calls, postal mail and emails trying to get this issue resolved.

Hostgator was my first hosting company, and I was scared about setting up an screwing up my site. I actually paid someone on fiverr to do it for me. I later setup another site but did it all myself while on the phone with Hostgator Support.

Super easy. They answered all my questions for me and were very helpful. Later when my site was getting a little crazy and hard for me to keep running by myself, they were quick to offer some solutions and make things easier for me again. Excellent company overall, and great rates.

I have used Hostgator for over a decade on different things. I was with them before they moved to Texas. However, since the company was sold; it has really went down hill.

Outages, less services, longer response times are all common now. I have left them and that is saying something as I was with them when they are young and hardly anyone knew who they was.

When I first signed up with Hostgator around 18 months ago, I was very pleased with their service. Then, a week or so ago, the site went down for CPU overuse. I have an average of eight(!) visitors a day.

At the time it went down I'd put up two Wordpress pages in the previous three months. There was no reason for it to have suddenly gone crazy. I checked visitor numbers when I got access to the site but no, no problem.

Too many plugins they said. I had twenty-two. Fair enough.

I knocked it back down to eight, losing some functionality along the way. They recommend three to five. Who on earth is going to run a Wordpress site with 3-5 plugins???

Jetpack, security, and a few other basics and you're over the limit. After all the chit-chat over several days which provided me with no really useful information beyond what's on their advice pages, I went over the site with a fine-toothed comb and detailed every step, including questions for the support along the way, to make sure I did it properly. In the end, no questions answered, just an 'It seems fine now, you're up!' style email after six days of messing.

And then it went down again instantly. Then up. Then down again.

Now up again. I'm afraid of even logging in lest I break it. Two suggestions I've made to them.

Repeatedly. One was that instead of ripping the site down and making it look to anyone who chances along as if the site probably no longer exists, how about a page that says 'Site currently under maintenance, please come back later'? That would up the chance of people returning later.

The answer when I eventually got it? Hostgator isn't set up to do that. Yeah.

Yeah, I know, that's why I suggested it. The other suggestion was that, better still, they find a way of throttling any site that overuses resources rather than taking it down, and have that generate a warning to the customer that though the site is still running, throttling may make it slow for users, so it may be best to check what's wrong. Now, I'm no techie.

That may be easy, that may be impossible, but I've yet to receive an answer to that suggestion. I don't feel comfortable with them any more, but have given them the benefit of the doubt by marking them by an 'average' of my experience over the last eighteen months, the last week pulling them down from 4-5 stars throughout to an average now of 3 stars. Reading an earlier review, someone mentioned that Hostgator has changed hands and seems to have gone down the tubes somewhat.

I can't confirm or deny that, and my current frustration may be no more than this being the first time I've really tested them - or, perhaps, they've really tested me - and they've got no worse. However, this has been a less-than happy experience for me, and I'm starting to at least consider moving to a different hosting provider.

I love their support and features. No complaints about that. But I am hosting a wordpress domain on my hostgator account, and as it turns out it takes forever to connect to my server.

Their support told me to use Cache plugins, and optimize my website, and even after spending 24hours and finally optimizing it, it came out with the same problem. Then suddenly it was back up. So I realized they are just fooling around with me.

Its their stupid server that fails to take up my website's load. Go with something else, hostgator made life worst.

I have been using HostGator India for more than two years now and the reason why I love them so much is because of their customer support. I clearly remember back in year 2011 I started using their offering VPS for the first time for mine first blog, and then thereafter the relation flourish in such a way that I never think of option for any other hosting provider. Currently, I owe three VPS with these guys and hosting eight of mine domains on it, namely, i2mag.com, justwp.org, justinfo.graphics, codeandme.net, nextbigproduct.net, techexplained.org, 99dollarwebsite.org and howtowebdesign.org. I will say three cheers to these guys and thanks a lot for being there whenever I need their support. :)

I have been a dedicated server client for about five years now. When we first started, it was great. The service was great, the blogs from the CEO were awesome and everything was well.

Then, Hostgator was bought out by Endurance International Group. The server farm was moved and all of a sudden our server would drop offline and experience outages. It was daily, and devastating.

They only offered somewhat reasonable tweets as to the status of the service. Their service has been terrible since the buyout. Slow response times, worse entry level tech support and just a poor moral of the company. I don't advise them in the current state, as I am in the process of migrating our dedicated server somewhere else.

I started with HostGator a couple of years ago. It seems that they have taken a nosedive and now have pretty bad tech support and their servers continue to go down contantly. I am migrating my sites to a new server; but migration has been tough since the servers keep having issues or going down.

The CEO of the company is arrogant and doesn't take any responsibility for the company errors. I was being overcharged for a year and when they refused to refund me I had to file a complaint to the BBB where they agreed to refund me, but I got a message from the CEO basically telling me I was wrong. I will never recommend this hosting to anyone. Their prices used to be the lowest for VPS but now they are not even the lowest.

Of Course, Hostgator rocks... The best thing about hostgator has been their features at such low rates. To add to it the support they provide gives us With in A Minute solution for almost all problems.

I am in the webdesigning circle for around 3 to 4 years from now and had had experiences with some of the worst and some of the best hosting sites. Right from the very cheap to the very expensive ones, Hostgator tops the chart for its value. I had been looking for a reliable webhosting when I overcame Hostgator.

The thing being it has local servers in India just added to my benefits. After a bit of Second thoughts I paid them the money and now the association with them has been 2 valuable years of reliable hosting... Any Newbie would consider uptime as the most important aspect to consider and hostgator really does the job with almost 99% uptime.

There have been a few times my site have been down due to various issues and the support has helped me to get back online in no time. Any webhosting isn't free from few problems and so is hostgator but these are slight niggles almost all times and you need not be worrying too much. And further, the support always comes to your help. I would certainly recommend Hostgator to anybody reading this review just to experience their support.Mind you, you will enjoy their tireless support while you stay with them.

Hostgator used to be awesome. So awesome that in 2006 after I started designing websites for other people that I bought a reseller account and referred everyone I knew to them. I am not sure what's happened with their company since mid-2012.

Their downtime has increased dramatically, their customer service isn't nearly so prompt or courteous, and my sites load slow. It appears as if they overload their shared hosting servers, and if someone had told me that I should upgrade (eventhough I was only using 1/2 of my allotted resources as a reseller), I may have stuck with them and bought a VPS plan. However, their customer service appears lately to be handled with a cavalier attitude lately...

and takes hours to respond to a site being down! Needless to say, after more than 7 years, I'm divorcing from Hostgator and migrating to one of their competitors this week.
