Ubiquity Hosting Introduction

Ubiquity Hosting, based in Phoenix, Arizona, offers its customers a wide range of cloud-based hosting services. The web host is part of a larger group of companies managed by LeaseWeb. The company has been in business since 1997 and it constantly strives to "help businesses cut IT costs and reach their goals" through hard work and integration of the latest technologies.

Services and Specializations

Ubiquity Hosting provides a wide range of hosting plans including shared, VPS, and dedicated hosting. Its plans are based on cloud technology and include many features. Though the company's plans will work well for an individual or small business, the company primarily targets enterprise customers.

Customers looking for a unique set of cloud based plans to get their business online should consider Ubiquity Hosting's shared plans. These plans can be hosted either on a Windows or Linux based server and include differing amounts of disk space, bandwidth, and databases. The Windows plans support both MySQL and MSSQL as well as PHP and ASP.NET while the Linux plans only support MySQL and PHP. Both plans also have a number of other features including anti-virus protection, spam filters, and SSL certificates.

In addition to shared plans, Ubiquity Hosting offers VPS plans. The VPS plans offered are ideal for businesses needing more dedicated resources to handle additional traffic. The company's plans are based on fast SSD storage that vary by the number of virtual CPUs, virtual RAM, and bandwidth. Ubiquity's VPS plans are hosted on powerful servers which features a secure firewall and can be managed through a customer portal. Besides standard VPS plans, the company also offers private cloud services based on VMWare, Cloudstack, and Microsoft Azure technologies.

Ubiquity Hosting also offers dedicated server plans which allow customers to get a fully customized server. These plans have several unique features including servers that use powerful Intel processors, Dell or HP server hardware, DDR3 RAM, SATA or SSD hard disks, high bandwidth allowances, and multiple datacenter locations. Alternatively, customers have a choice of "bare metal" servers which have shorter delivery times (hours instead of days) plus hourly or monthly billing. Other than dedicated servers, the company has colocation services which allow customers to use their own server hardware.

Though hosting services are a major part of their operations, the company also offers a number of other services including domain protection, DDoS protection, and backup plans.

Infrastructure and Uptime

Ubiquity Hosting provides its customers a redundant and robust infrastructure that features powerful Dell and HP servers with Intel processors that are available in multiple locations throughout the world. The company also boasts of fast network speeds and hardware redundancy. However, the company only offers this guarantee for some of its plans such as its VPS hosting.

Support and Customer Service

Customers who are struggling with technical issues can get the help they need through live chat, support tickets, and phone. Phone support is limited but live chat and support tickets are staffed 24/7.

Billing

Ubiquity Hosting's billing varies based on the plan chosen and is either on a monthly or yearly basis. For example, shared hosting plans get billed at the yearly rate while the dedicated server plans get billed monthly. Customers have a number of ways to pay for the plans including major credit cards, PayPal, and bank transfer.

Summary

Ubiquity Hosting is now a part of LeaseWeb, a company in the Netherlands. Ubiquity offers its customers a wide range of plans including shared, VPS, and dedicated server hosting with many features. The company has other plans for data protection and backups. Customers looking for a company that wants to help them "cut costs" and "reach their goals" will find much to like at Ubiquity Hosting.

I work for a company managing our production environment. We have around 20 servers with 3 different technology partners. 2 of them are at ubiquity. I have been going back and forth with their support regarding slow upstream speeds (3 mbps). Here are a list of complaints I have with them.

1) Their support ticket system on their website is broken
2) They don't have ssl setup correctly on support.ubiquityhosting.com
3) In order to diagnose the issue, they insisted on scheduling downtime. I told them 6pm PT, which they confirmed, and I brought the server down at exactly that time. Their support didn't even get to it for over an hour, resulting in almost 2 hours of downtime for a 15 minute test.
4) Their 15 minute test was an SCP transfer to another computer on the local network. Does nothing for my slow upstream issue.
5) When the test showed speeds were good internally, they ignored all my further emails regarding the issue, blaming it on backbone congestion on the route, even though I showed them it was consistent across 3 different routes and the destinations all had speeds well above the 3mbps limit I was seeing.
6) Refused to escalate the issue to management.

Stay away from these people. Just don't do it. You'd be better off hosting a site on your home internet.

I am a customer for many years and their support is under earth.
I have quite a few servers there and all except one are instable.

Their network is down every day a few times, maybe just some minutes or hours if you are lucky. Nearly all of their datacenters have these issues.
Most times it's an unexplained issue or some customer was attacked, I guess it does not speak for their customers that they are permanently under DDOS.

No problem, just write a ticket and get no response for a day, or a quarter response without any information.
Great if your server is down since half a day, no one cares, no one gives you a time of fix, no one compensates you.

I am customer of many DCs, ubiquity is by far the worst and on top it's not the cheapest one.

I have been using Ubiquity Hosting (UH) since 2009. My first experience with them was ordering an old school VPS running CentOS 4.x in their Atlanta datacenter.

I maintained that service until 2014 when I switched to their cloud hosting. Now before I discuss that service I want to say the VPS was pretty stable. I had a few outages over five years but they were fairly rare and each time UH was aware of the situation. That VPS pretty much just hummed along for the lifespan I had it.

Now as I noted I switched to UH cloud offering which is there second generation cloud infrastructure. I didn't care for their first generation because it was only being offered in the NYC datacenter and I simply don't want servers located in NYC. However when they launched the second generation cloud service it was available in all their datacenter locations. So I started my transition from the old VPS to the cloud service.

I decided I would split the sites on the VPS between multiple clouds and ordered a cloud based in Dallas to start the migration. A few weeks later, including spending a few days experimenting, I had moved all my data off the old VPS and onto my multiple clouds. I found ordering and configuring clouds pretty straight forward and easy using the Ubiquity Motion control panel. This is UH's web interface that allows you to order clouds and services (like backup), manage clouds (reinstall or switch operating systems, turn clouds off or on, connect to console, etc), manage various network options, and manage your account in general. I also really like that the panel allows you to enable two factor authentication. This is very important for security to help keep unauthorized persons out.

The clouds have been very stable only experiencing one issue. It was during this time I learned UH's clouds are more like advanced VPSes. You see cloud is a wide term that means many different things to different people. However in my mind cloud meant that if the physical server developed issues my clouds would move to another server thus keeping my services online. This doesn't happen with UH's second generation. If the server has hardware issues or stability issues clouds are effected. I am told my UH that their third generation will have that functionality along with the ability to do VLAN's and some other interesting features.

Overall I really like UH. They have offered stable services for low prices. I also really like their support. Now I am not someone who needs hand holding but every time I have needed to find out about the hardware, network, or ask a question I can get in touch with a human either by chat or phone within a few minutes or less! They have never rushed me off the phone and have been willing to talk out the issue and this speaks volumes about the company. How many hosting companies can you call and actually talk to a live US based human in a few minutes or less? Not that many. Plus if the person doesn't know the answer to a question they usually have put me on hold (call) or said just a moment (chat) and either transferred me to someone who could answer it immediately or talked to another party then reported back in the same session. I rarely have gotten go open a ticket and that is usually because I tend to ask really advanced questions.

I have been very pleased with UH's overall service and the minor down times I have experienced are ultimately my fault. It is amazing how many people place their site on a single node (server) and then when that node develops a problem and their site goes offline for a bit they complain. If you want real protection you should run your site on more than a single server. If you can't afford that setup or don't know how that is fine, but understand at some point ALL servers experience issues.

I highly recommend UH and if they keep their current business practices with good customer support and technology they have a bright future.

Very frustrated with Ubiqity. My sites are slow. They have "scheduled" downtime without communicating with me. Support is unhelpful and seem to be playing games. They don't really care that my customers are offline. Back in 2008, they were not bad. But over time something happened. Avoid this host if you value your data.

Last October, however, they "accidentally deleted" our VPS, costing us thousands in down time and lost data. On top of that, in January they decided to charge us for the three previous months of unused service. No uptime percentage or amount of service can make up for a mistake like that.

Ubiquity has lots of down time. Between October and December 2010, their shared hosting servers got hacked twice, and all customers in their shared accounts had their index.html or index.php files replaced with some "hacked by" files, and all other files were deleted.

Me & three other friends used this company for our websites, and we all called the customer service hotline to get some help since we found out that it was a glitch in THEIR SECURITY that allowed the hacks to take place...and they kept blaming it on other people, and finally blamed it on us. (Even though it happened to everyone in their shared hosting servers)

Luckily we had everything backed up locally, so it wasn't too much to fix, but it was their responsibility and they pawned it off on someone else.

Customer service is rude, unhelpful, and most of the time, just plain ignorant.

I will never use this pathetic company, or their counterpart darkstarllc (ventrillo servers) again.

I would suggest to completely stay away from this hosting provider. Our site was down almost a week about a month ago due to their servers being compromised. Once again it was down today due to the same issues! I have never experienced so much down time and our website developer (upon requesting a refund to move us elsewhere) was informed 'There's no need to link us to a negative review either if that's what you're planning on doing ...' and that 'If you're going to open a paypal dispute, your account will be suspended and no further communication will be needed from you but regardless, there are a couple paypal dispute reasons you can give'

Note they had already admitted our developer had a couple of reasons even though they refused a payment for our site only days earlier!

Perhaps the only reason they have few negative reviews is because clients are bullied into not writing them!

We have numerous sites with Ubiquity and at times they went down. As I am writing this we are now on the 4th day of having 3 sites down. This time their excuse is that there servers had been compromised and they are working on the back up. We are also told that they now have server issues and suspended all sites temporarily!

As we had just paid the renewal we requested some money back but was told no and if we contact PayPal they would no longer correspond with me! Even worse is I contacted them as we have a resellers account and informed them that due to all sites being suspended and still no resolution we would like to cancel our newly set up USD 200 + Resellers account and we would not be asking for a refund. Quite simply we could not put our corporate name to hosting with these kind of issues!

However as we have another package which enables us 3 domains we have had to move two onto another host as 5 days downtime is too long, their servers being compromised, and suspending all sites is no good to our own clients! I requested if we could change the package back to one domain only and we would await for them to bring this one website only site back up and as we had just paid for it could they either refund or credit time against the difference? The reply I got was that we could cancel anytime but would not get any refund followed by a cancellation link! This is totally disgusting! I was also warned not to post any bad reviews!!! I have all the posts from them and will be compiling this on our web development site and to read is not only entertaining but an extreme warning about using Ubiquity Hosting!
